So so refreshing to hear you say that you don't like something but you're still using it up so as not to waste it! So used to the culture of hoarding and throwing out, I'm so glad of your positive influence
Because of you, and a select few others, I bring mason jars to Whole Foods, bring my own takeaway bags, and carry eating/drinking utensils. What a wonderful way to spread your influence! Did you have an inkling you’d have such an impact?
You have inspired me to try stop buying stuff in plastic & buy more stuff in bulk. I got 5 reusable bags to put the veggies and fruit I buy in. And I Reuse as many cristal jars as I can. Also really want to try the menstrual cup ! I’ve already had reusable straws, a keepcup, water bottle and all that for when I’m out. It is so important for our planet to start doing this! Aaaand, I love your videos. I’m a new suscriber but I have already watched most of them. Your voice is so calm and clear it does relax me so much and help me to improve my english! Thank you so so much. Lots of love from Spain xxx Ps: i would be very interested to know what you use as a contraceptive that is zero waste + vegan? Could you talk about that if it’s not too weird? Haha! 😳
I live in Spain too. I use an implant. It is no zero waste as it is made of plastic, but it is low waste as it is very small and lasts for three years. Plus as a side effect I have no periods. Win-win-WINNNN
I love your honesty!! I can relate to the toothpaste struggle, I still use a conventional one because I am also really anxious about my dental hygiene :(
The blades are fully recyclable with metal recycling. Store them up and then put them in a used recyclable tin and the whole thing can go in the recycling bin.
Thank you for being so honest! You might feel you are running long-winded but I found all the information very helpful, as I begin low waste journey. Personally for me, its not just about buying new things that are environmentally friendly to replace old ones. Its about finding things that would work for me that produce less waste.
I used to have extremely sensitive teeth and gums so I did some research and ended up with this: a bamboo toothbrush + dental tabs a miswak brush (makes your teeth feel super polished and it works without toothpaste, yay!) a tongue scraper (I used to use a spoon before that) and package free floss (most important thing on the list!) I know this might sound excessive but I just do it in the evenings and I listen to music while doing it :) when in a rush I only use the miswak and floss. oh yeah and 👏 love 👏 your 👏 HAIR 👏
About toothpaste. It has been the hardest thing to change for us during our zero waste journey (3 years now). We tried a lot of homemade recipes without being convinced. But we finally found a great recipe ! It’s a powder toothpaste. Very easy, efficient and tasty ! +Chloe it can but in my recipe There is only a few baking soda. That Way it´s not abrasive. The white clay i use is very soft. My recipe had been approved by my dentist and i had no problem with my teeth And my gums since i use it, neither my husband.
There’s a brand of toothpaste in the US called David’s that comes in metal tubes. However it is $10, which is definitely a luxury. But if you have to buy plastic tubes, you can recycle them via the Terracycle program in the US. You can gather a bunch over time, as well as plastic toothbrushes, floss containers, etc and mail them in for free to be recycled.
Hey Immy dont know of you've cracked your toothpaste dilemma yet, but I had the same as you! Just couldnt find a recipe or product I really liked. But think Ive figured it out! So if you make a recipe (like yours or Blue Ollis.. just the regular coconut oil, baking soda, mint, whatever) but before you put it in your brush with the spatula.. just rub your wet brush over your natural soap (or a teeny drop of mint dr bronners works too) just not too much as its gross. The combination is really good! The natural toothpaste masks the taste of the soap but the soap gives the lather and leaves the squeaky clean feel we all secretly want. Then obviously homemade mouthwash of just water and a few drops of mint is the icing on the cake! Hope that helps xx
Immy! I want to thank you for all the inspiration! Although it is just the beginning of my less waste journey, I am so happy with the progress i've made. I'm using reusable water bottle, reusable straw, reusable cotton rounds and some textile bags for fruits and veggies. I am also loving a menstrual cup for a few months now and buying more toiletries (like deodorant) in glass. Some of them I do make on my own, green tea toner for the win! Much love
When it's finished wash well and keep the plastic tube of the lipbalm :) you can re-use it and make your own DIY lipstick (if you don't use lipstick than it can be a good idea for a zerowaste present!)
Your voice is literally so calming I love it! I literally loved this video, I thought it was so interesting and really motivated me to try different no/low waste products
I started using Bite toothpaste bites. It’s in a glass jar and metal top. They have 4 month sub where they send you new bites to refill your jar you already have from the first shipment. I started it this month and love it so far.
Try out the toothy tabs from lush, there are many different ones as well as mouthwash tabs. They come in a little plastic bottle and if you collect 5, you can take them back to the lush store to receive a free face mask that is in a container that can also be brought back to the store to be recycled X
Have you tried a cowash for your hair? Its pretty much a conditioner but with gentle scalp cleansing properties. You work it into your scalp first to loosen oils and dirt then rinse the dirt away, then you add another lather through your hair to make sure your curls get some good hydration. I read about it on an article on the lush website because they have a naked one but I'm sure other brands would have some options too. Hairs looking amazing by the way!
I LOVE the Meow Meow Tweet Bamboo Charcoal Face Soap... it helps my sensitive, dry, acne-prone skin so much!! I follow it up with a facial oil afterwards, but love their vegan ingredients and they come in cardboard or you can buy from Package Free Shop in NYC!
Whatever you are doing with your hair it looks amazing. I love your shirt too - the colour really suits your dark hair. Thanks for sharing your toilet bag essentials. I use an aloe vera toothpaste that I am happy with and get from my trusty local health food shop x
I have dead straight hair naturally and I've always wanted waves/ curls! Your hair is absolutely beautiful, and your videos have encouraged me to start to accept and go with the natural look. I've been vegan for 4 years and on my minimalist journey for almost two years, and have just really gotten into the zero waste movement (plugging away slowly). You've been my main motivation and source of wisdom so thank you for everything you do! Love from Australia
I love my tongue scrapper. It definitely helps with breath and if you use it during the day, a bit after eating you can get a lot of food or sugar that is just sitting on your tongue out of your mouth. (I am a stay at home mom right now but I am thinking of adding it to my bag for when I leave the house.)
Hi! I noticed your razor blades were the Albatross brand. I also use those and get them from the Package Free Shop in NYC. I chose them because you can collect your blades once you are done with them and send them back to the company since not all municipal recycling programs accept safety razor blades. You can just put them in the little envelope you have them in (sealed) and then send them in a regular envelope. You can then send them to Albatross Designs PO Box 2254 Berkeley, CA 94702. I hope that helps so then you don’t have to keep on hanging on the them or worrying about them becoming waste!
Albatross Shave Company has a blade back program. Their blades are super affordable and you can get a years supply at once, when you're done with your package of used blades you just mail them back to the company and they repurpose them.
The blades, I have one of those recyclable tin can money boxes. Once I finish with the blade I pop it in there, when it’s full label it sharps and recycle at local recycling facility. 😊
I used to buy Truthpaste and loved it but it's too expensive so I'm making my own from coconut oil, bicarb and essential oils. It took a while to get used to it but I like it, it's keeping my sensitive teeth pain free 😊
If you are worried about your dental health i can recommend wooden tooth sticks. Its really good for removing remaining plaque and its very beneficial for your gum. I myself use Neobio toothpaste. Its organic, I dont know about the packaging though.. same for wooden toothsticks: they might be very wastefull. Good luck!
Hey girl! I have hair very similar to yours and I never ever shampoo, not even when my hair was long. What I started doing instead is when I feel like my hair/scalp are actually kinda dirty and need a shampooing (rare, but usually after swimming in a lake or maybe after a hard workout. Like dirty to the point where a significant water rinse/scrub wouldn't do the job) I just make a mixture of baking soda and water! I pour that onto my scalp and just gently work it in and rinse it out. It works great! But baking soda is defo too harsh to use as an everyday shampoo -some people do...and over time it really shows 😅 hope that helps!
For anyone in the US looking to recycle used razor blades, you can mail your used blades to the Albatross shave shop! They have a recycling program specifically for razor blades
The toothpaste recipe I use and LOVE is 2 parts coconut oil 1 part baking soda You can also sub some of the baking soda for arrowroot powder and it will be less harsh if you have sensitive teeth. You can also add essential oil, but the coconut flavor is enough for me.
After having following your channel for quite long it's wonderful to see how you show more and more your personality on videos! Also, trying store bought natural low waste toothpaste for a first time atm, the consistency is so weird comparing to "normal" toothpaste... Oh well, I'll see what comes of it.
Love the safety razor. Just purchased on and it's the best thing ever! You can mail the blades to Albatross and they'll recycle/reuse/or dispose of them for you!
I've heard that you can put your used blades in a cup of water to get the surfaces of them really rusty. After that you can just stick them into the soil and they will continue to rust and crumble up in the ground until they're gone.... I haven't tried this yet/ don't know if it's very safe but it might be an option!
Have you tried making your own remineralizing tooth powder? I finally found a recipe that I LOVE! Just wet your bamboo toothbrush, and dip it in! 5 parts calcium powder 3 parts xylitol 2 parts baking soda 1 part diatomaceous earth powder *optional to make a paste consistency 3-5 parts coconut oil
Apple cider vinegar and water for conditioner. But, as a curly girl, you must moisturize it properly before the ACV. I recomend avocado, cocoa butter, grape seed oil, aloe vera (all of them, maybe?) There are very recipes in the pinterest.
I travel with very portable chunks of raw cocoa butter that I buy unpackaged from a UK wholesale supplier of oils, butters, essential oils, etc. I only use it on my body, although it's so versatile, never my hair because I've given up conditioner and now only use shampoo. I know that's the reverse of a lot of low-wasters but it's what works for my hair and the important thing for me to do was streamline and reduce my toiletries where possible. It's an ongoing and sometimes frustrating journey because it often seems counter-productive to keep trying out new products and techniques. You either end up using something sub-par until it's used up, or you waste money and resources continually buying things to try out. I'm still using up failed facial cleansers as body wash...
When I researched these razors I read you can put the used blades in a jar filled with salt and there they will rust away. Keep the jar of salt for many many blades to come. I couldn't find any info on what to do with the salt/rust after though.
By the way, have you thought about reuse the expensive deodorant packaging with your own deodorant recipe? I hate to use my fingers to apply mine too and I'm using something like that with a very similar recipe. Kisses from Barcelona!
For deodorant i use "allume di rocca" costs almost nothing ( less than 1 euro) easy to use, natural, does not stain, can be used in any part of the body. It is a miracle for me.
Ugh, it is so hard to find toothpaste! And unfortunately every region has completely different products. If there's any other Canadians out there -- check out Nelson Naturals! I did not like their peppermint one, BUT their thieves blend one is my current go-to. Also, Unwrapped life for haircare seems to the winner so far :)
I’ve used a couple of different wooden toothbrushes and notice the bristles go bad within a month of use. However, the recycled-plastic toothbrushes they sell at Trader Joe’s seem to last longer in my experience while still being eco friendly
I recently started my low impact movement (this year). You were one of the people that inspired me ☺️. Thank you for sharing your essentials! I'm a new subscriber 😁.
I love your videos! Your voice is so calm and makes me really want to relax and grab a cup of tea!♥️ Also, I love your curly hair! It would be great to see a video of how you take care of your hair! I have curly hair as well, so It would be very helpful. Much love from Spain😊
I’ve also just stashed my used razor blades 😂 They’re currently in an empty Lush face mask container. Had my razor for 2 years and only on blade number 4...I bought a pack of 100, so they might be part of my future kids inheritance!!!
Sane here! I bought one a few months ago and just changed the blades for the 1st time after 3 months of using it a few times a week, I always keep it on the dry side of my shower and hang it to dry. I bought a 100 pack from Astra... I have a feeling I am going to have it for YEARS! 💕
I would say a lot of the things that I found didnt work, didn't have the proper proportions. I have DIY'd a lot of stuff and the ones that were the hardest was 1. Dry shampoo, getting the right mix for my brunette hair was frustrating to I just went back to cornstarch. 2. Making my own lotion with butter, I mixed it with coconut oil finally for a consistency win. But figuring that out was a pain.
I love your videos!! I use an alum stone for deodorant, it was inexpensive and although it did come in a bit of packaging it should last years and is a great natural low waste alternative!
I love Meow Meow Tweet's Deos as well. If you buy them via Naturissimo (Online Shop) they are way cheaper. :) Maybe you could make your recipe more firm and reuse the container?
Me again! :) I searched a bit online and found something like a solid deo bar with the typical DIY ingredients. Some shops sell them in some kind of wax paper (?) but you could also store them in a metal box etc. Maybe you could try that as well so you don't have to use your hands to rub it in. (just so you know how they look like: natural-pure-solids.de/collections/deo-bars-festes-deodorant)
Dear Imy, I would recommend the avocado co-wash from lush, i know they aren't all natural and zero waste, but they are evolving in the right direction I think! so the shampoo bars and conditioner bars can be bought without any packaging! Love Paulina
Avocados should not be wasted on hair care - they should be used as food. Please investigate the devastating effects of "avocado crazes" should not be wasted - like coconut meat.
Also, Lush shampoo bars, while they come unpackaged, contain high amounts of sulfates I.e sodium laurel sulfate which is terrible for skin, hair, and the water system.
@@hipsie6587 thank you very much i did not know that. I am noticing my hair gets oily way faster after a month of washing with the lush bar so I will not buy it again.
@@whatminadoes if you need a replacement, a lot of people have had good luck with ethique or j.r. liggetts shampoo bars! However I have medium porosity wavy hair and hard water and my hair did not take to the j.r. liggetts one.
for razor blades I was told that you can keep them and whenever you go to the doctor next bring them and ask if you can put them in the sharps container.
I don't know if you've seen/tried it but if not, pls see if anywhere near you has the Denttabs with Fluoride! I'm in Leeds and my local refill store has them, and I have seen packaging-free UK retailers online! Fluoride's obviously hella important especially if you are a stickler about your dental health and it was the one thing I could not find plastic free...until the other day. And now I'm complete lol
I am using some naked products for the bathroom ( shampoo bar, body soap), and decided to go ahead and find a better solution for toothpaste. I didn't want to use the toothpaste tabs because they are kind of gross and also not cost affective at all. I ended up finding (here in Greece) toothpaste in a jar, in a eco/low waste eshop. It costs about 8euros (plus shipping =12 euros in sum) for something that (they say) will last me 8 weeks if i brush 2 times per day. My regular toothpaste tube costs less than 2 euros. Going low waste or more eco friendly is pretty pricey honestly.
As for toothpaste, apparantly there are toothpaste tabs that sometimes come in low waste packaging. I would consider checking it out! I know this is an older video, but I figure I'd mention it.
I've heard you can put the blades inside of an empty can and recycle them that way, as they're not recyclable on their own. Also I've heard some people soak them overnight in vinegar and then bury them in their gardens but obvs don't do this if you have kids or pets and ensure everyone in the household is made aware. X
That is understandable but all kinds of wild animals (chipmunks, rabbits, moles, worms) live in the dirt and I do not think they would tolerate it well
i still use a conventional toothpaste because i have pretty sensitive teeth (getting sick as an infant left me with less enamel than the normal person, it's super annoying). when i first got into zero waste i made my own and my teeth just hurt for like a week before i got out of my own head and realized that my health comes first and i shouldn't be making myself feel uncomfortable and unwell for the sake of a plastic tube!
I don't know if anyone already said it but I know that in France we can bring our razor blades to pharmacies bc they can recycle sharp metal objects ; maybe you can try in the UK? Also for the lipbalm the lush superbalm is sold in a metal box that you can either recycle or reuse, the composition is quite nice however it is pretty expensive (15€) so I'd advise you to wait for sales or some discount event. I had it for half the price last year and it lasted the whole year
You said you have not yet found what to do with your blades- your safety razor looks like it is from the brand ALBATROSS ( i saw the hemp holding bag ) on their website they sell not only extremely cheap replacement blades for your razor but they have a BLADE RETURN SYSTEM!! THATS RIGHT! Place your old blades in the envelope they come shipped to you, and ship it back to them all together when you're done with that set. They clean, file and re use them i believe. I am definitely ordering mine from there today!
Have you tried the Georganics toothpastes? They are made in the UK and came in glass yars with metal lids, and they also get their containers back. I use one of the toothpastes they make and also the mouth tablets, I think they are pretty good, and all natural ingredinets. :)
I find denttabs work really well for me for toothpaste. Its just like a regular toothpaste and has fluoride and you can get it from some online zero waste shops in the UK eg plasticphobia
Avocado co-wash and R&B from Lush would be good for your hair, Immy! R&B is in a pot but lush re-use them if you take them back. The avocado co-wash you can buy unpackaged. X
Ok I'm coming back to this video so long after it was posted but lemme just say I LOVE YOUR SHIRT OMG THE COLOR THE ALMOST MASCULINE STYLE I LOVEEEEEEEEE
I know it's not plastic free, but I've heard Lush's R&B is a really good moisturiser for curly hair. Even though it's not plastic free, at least they have a take back program for the tubs their products come in, so you can return it to them and they'll recycle and reuse it :)
I use your recipe for deodorant, and add 1/8 oz of beeswax to it and it makes it solid enough that you could pour it hot into that tube to refill it as a solid stick.
I recommend salt shampoo💆🏼♀️ Here in Norway we have a company called “Rå Organic Skincare” and they sell it in glass jars, and when you’re out you can just refill the jar (the refill gives you around 10 $ discount)🌱
If you look on terracycle, they recycle various tooth care products including toothpaste tubes and electric brush heads ! Just Google it and find your nearest collection point
Don't stop shampooing your hair (specifically your scalp) Leads to clogged pores and possibly your hair falling out. Use sulfates at least once in a while.Lush makes shampoo bars with SLS if you want something plastic and packaging free.
Reuse the deodorant packaging for your future DIY ones. My recipe is 2 parts coconut oil and 1 part baking soda (plus optional essential oils for scent). It works very well in regular deodorant packaging, just keep it in the fridge in the summer months.
I really like the "dirty" toothy tabs by lush although I did have to get used to the test at the beginning. They foam up like crazy and the container is 100% recycled material. :)
I confess I have never needed deodorant in my life (certified by all my friends and family). I also don’t have hair on my legs or armpits (the armpits went through laser hair removal over ten years ago and still hairless). Highly recommend the laser hair removal 👍; possibly the most zero waste solution for hair removal..? Enjoyed the video. I’m glad you started posting videos of advice and personal shares again, love these casual and intimate videos of yours ❤️ I gave up on toothpaste and use regular store stuff and then participate in TerraCycle’s oral care recycling program. Question: on my list but didn’t see it on yours- what about nail clippers? (Silk?) dental floss?
Great video! So many lols :) I’d love to see how you clean and take care of your safety razor, I can’t get into the nooks and crannies in mine. I’ve just started using a DIY flaxseed gel for my hair, which is going well so far!
Thank you for sharing this hun. Ooh the razor is something i dont have. Will have to look into it. Im having the same issue with my hair. Trying to find something that works for my hair. Thanks again x
Here is my recipe for remineralizing toothpaste: 5 parts calcium powder, 2 parts baking soda, 3 parts xylitol powder, 3-5 parts coconut oil, and essential oil of your choice (I use peppermint). This recipe works! Mix dry ingredients together first and then add the coconut oil to your desired consistency. Then add the essential oil. I hope you like it!
Just today I bought dental tabs with fluoride (also without) in a compostable packaging and they taste minty and hold up a bit more than 2 months. The brand is denttabs; but maybe they‘re only available in Germany...
When you make your own deodorant again, is there a way you could refill that little tube? No more wiping and you wouldnt have to recycle the packaging either 😊 I love these videos, keep up the good work!
i make my own lip balm and it's great, melting beeswax, avocado, sesam and coconut oil. Then put it in a jar and in a small box so i can carry with me and really it works amazing!
So so refreshing to hear you say that you don't like something but you're still using it up so as not to waste it! So used to the culture of hoarding and throwing out, I'm so glad of your positive influence
Yes. AGREED.

charcoal is bad for your teeth - any dentist will confirm.
isn’t baking soda really damaging to your teeth if used frequently like you would toothpaste?

I saw somewhere that people save their used blades and then take them to their doctor's office and put them in the sharps container!
Can drop them off in any sharps container a lot of public toilets have them also. At least they do in Australia.
My doctors office takes mine!!!

Good luck!
The Basin bath company makes a great conditioner bar! Their products are unpacked, or if bought in bulk, come with minimal plastic.
The toothpaste recipe I use and LOVE is
2 parts coconut oil
1 part baking soda
You can also sub some of the baking soda for arrowroot powder and it will be less harsh if you have sensitive teeth. You can also add essential oil, but the coconut flavor is enough for me.
I'd like to include a bidet to this list!
You have been such positive inspiration on my path to less waste. Thank you!
5 parts calcium powder
3 parts xylitol
2 parts baking soda
1 part diatomaceous earth powder
*optional to make a paste consistency
3-5 parts coconut oil
Wow! Love your hair! It's really better looking than other videos. 😍
Deodorant I use: apple cider vinegar + drops of essential oil (palmarosa or bergamot) in a spray bottle. Works perfect for me.
Eco boost is also UK based and talks about recycling the blades from a safety razor
It looks like you have Albatross blades! They actually have a take back program where you can send your used blades back and they UPcycle them!
Hi. you can use soap nut powder to make organic shampoo. It's a great alternative.
tongue scraping was the thing i never knew my life required bless u eco angels for introducing this to me over a year ago now!!!!!!
and as always i love u and everything u do u brilliant and beautiful babe. you are so radiant!!!! seriously those curls i'm dyin here xoxoxoxo
There is a brand called tio which produces toothbrushes and the adapters for the electric toothbrushes. They are made out of plants 🌱
I love your videos! Your voice is so calm and makes me really want to relax and grab a cup of tea!♥️ Also, I love your curly hair! It would be great to see a video of how you take care of your hair! I have curly hair as well, so It would be very helpful. Much love from Spain😊
this video was so aesthetically pleasing! loving the way you shoot things and edit things lately! also that shirt looks so lovely on you!
I’ve also just stashed my used razor blades 😂 They’re currently in an empty Lush face mask container. Had my razor for 2 years and only on blade number 4...I bought a pack of 100, so they might be part of my future kids inheritance!!!
Tasha Larby oh my!
Sane here! I bought one a few months ago and just changed the blades for the 1st time after 3 months of using it a few times a week, I always keep it on the dry side of my shower and hang it to dry. I bought a 100 pack from Astra... I have a feeling I am going to have it for YEARS! 💕
I save up the blades too! You can recycle them at your local big recycling centre :) x
I would love to hear about all the DIY recipes that didn't work for you! I find it hard to know which recipes to avoid to avoid any waste.
Maybe you could make your recipe more firm and reuse the container?
oooooh good idea
Good thinking though, package free shampoo bars are awesome (when made from scratch or found with good ingredients:)
Going low waste or more eco friendly is pretty pricey honestly.
your voice is soo calming!!
I had it for half the price last year and it lasted the whole year
I never thought about it, but it makes sense!
@@aboutfeddy I've never though about it too, but I've read it on a blog (sorry for not referencing but it was a long time ago)
The color of your top looks lovely on you!
I use your recipe for deodorant, and add 1/8 oz of beeswax to it and it makes it solid enough that you could pour it hot into that tube to refill it as a solid stick.
Whoa! Your hair looks gorgeous today! And the shirt is soo pretty!
Tooth powders are also a really good option! I use one from urban oreganics
Don't stop shampooing your hair (specifically your scalp) Leads to clogged pores and possibly your hair falling out. Use sulfates at least once in a while.Lush makes shampoo bars with SLS if you want something plastic and packaging free.
Can't imagine you with straight hair to be honest... curls suit you so much :)
Reuse the deodorant packaging for your future DIY ones. My recipe is 2 parts coconut oil and 1 part baking soda (plus optional essential oils for scent). It works very well in regular deodorant packaging, just keep it in the fridge in the summer months.
Have u tried alum stone deodorant .I don't hear it to much in the zero waste community .it seems like a great option and epilator too for shaving
My tooth powder recipe: 1/4 cup bentonite clay, 3 tbsp calcium powder, 1 tbsp baking soda, 10 drops peppermint oil, 1 tbsp ground cinnamon, 1 TSP ground cloves, 1tbsp xylitol powder. I also make my own mouth wash: 1 cup filterd water, 1/2 TSP calcium powder, 1/4 TSP bicarbonate of soda, 1.5 TSP xylitol, 7 drops of peppermint oil. Shake before use.
Thank you for sharing your recipes!!
Emma Lamb hello, what about fluoride?
I heard you can mail your used blades to the Albatross company (US). I imagine there are other blade companies that would take them as well.
Your accent is so frickin cuuute😭🌱
i make my own lip balm and it's great, melting beeswax, avocado, sesam and coconut oil. Then put it in a jar and in a small box so i can carry with me and really it works amazing!
