    when you finished all your sanding and polishing of the blade, what did you dip the blade in and for how long?

    • @Koss-channel
      @Koss-channel  4 года назад +29

      It was ferric chloride water solution. I put it in for about 5min.

    • @randygwheeler
      @randygwheeler 4 года назад +10

      @@Koss-channel thank you very much. Sometimes I don't want a steel look. I'm working on a tumblr for my knives finish. Again thank you

      @@Koss-channel and why would you do that? For a mat finish?

    • @Tychohuybers
      @Tychohuybers 4 года назад +16

      @@cia9315 Ferric Chloride is an acidic salt, meaning it etches into the steel and depending on what steel it is (proper modern steel can have more than 5 different metals, along with carbon), it changes its brightness. A high-carbon steel will etch darker, while a steel with more nickel with etch brighter.

    • @randygwheeler
      @randygwheeler 4 года назад +3

      I use 1095 on my blades and thought about trying D2 but not real sure. I wanted a darker look on my steel and your process looks nice. I tried it on a piece of my steel. Definitely don’t want Togo for more than about 5 minutes. It gets thick and dark. Kind of beats the purpose of just a tint off of mat finished steel
