For me the movie is about how some people who are in “elite” differ from the “regular” people. In the movie they are shown as the cultists who do orgies, ritual killings, have “relationships” with minors etc. I think that it is very possible that there are people like that in the real life but if we tone down conspiracy levels then we still can see the “elite” as psychopaths without morals. For example gun manufacturers who are profiting from wars, intelligence agencies who stage coupes in different countries, oligarchs who support militant groups in order to benefit from regime change. Psychopaths are more likely to be the part of the elite because they are not concerned with other people lives, they have no empathy and they can overstep the boundaries which is hard for “regular” people.
And then there is Bill who wants to be a part of this group (portrayed as the cultists in the movie), but he doesn’t have that in him. He can’t even cheat ffs. And that group does not accept him because they see him as a regular man who doesn’t belong. Not only because he isn’t that rich but also because he can’t overstep the boundaries. So they show him that through intimidation: forget what you saw, go back to your regular life, leave that to us because we can do fucked up shit that you can’t.
So yeah that’s how I understood the movie

Best use I’ve ever had of the phrase ‘agree to disagree’. The feeling of being let down by character and plot development has led me to resent this one for a long time, probably unjustified. It still boils down to me personally disliking this emphasis on style, much like The Shining, while still acknowledging the handiwork of a master craftsman. Agreed with all of the points you made, totally understandable how it can be entirely fitting for somebody’s taste, but just not mine.
Glad to have found this hidden gem of a channel at under 1000 subs. Well done for once, RUclips algorithm, bravo!

My mom used to be a Tom Cruise fan in his early days, you know, Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rain Man. She hated Eyes Wide Shut, watching it now with me, she dosen't love it but understands it, she says "it's people with power", kinda the same with A Clockwork Orange.
Also you described my experience of watching Poor Things with my Mom.

They used the same mansion (Mentmore Towers) for Eyes Wide Shut and Batman Begins (The Wayne Manor)
Also, the costume shop owner (Milich) is played by the same guy who plays the homeless man in Batman Begins (Rade Serbedzija)
    Kinda cool

After reading a lot about Jeffrey Epstein, Harvey Weinstein, Jersey Island, Boy's Town, Pizzagate, Bohemian Grove, etc... You rewatch Eyes Wide Shut and suddenly everything makes more sense. You're right, the mansion scene really elevates the movie, it took me a while to really been drawn into Nicole Kidman's whole monologue when she's high, I thought her performance was extraordinary, Tom Cruise also (he hasn't talked about it in 25 years).

How old are you? I wathced Eyes Wide Shut for the first time in 2018 (23 at the time), and I loved it. Have been obsessing over it ever since, lol.
There is something special about that movie. Kubrick has so many great movies, but this one edges it out for me.
(During my first time viewing I almost knew nothing about the plot, and I had also downed 4-5 beers, so that really improved the experience/mood, lol)
