Love the video. I bought a LS MT125 with a loader, MMM, and backhoe. I get the mower thing, a zero turn makes more sense. But I had to get the mower so my wife thinks what I bought was a mower….

I think you nailed it with your comment regarding time. If you are in a hurry and have a big job the 1025r probably isn’t the right tractor for that job. I only said Uncle once and that was due to time when I was digging the foundation out for my 30x40 garage. I rented a mini ex and used the 1025r to move the soil to another area. This is a great little workhorse don’t underestimate its ability to get the job done.

I never had to say uncle with my 60" mid mount, of course my wife loves mowing the acre. I picked my 1025R because of Tractor Time with Tim and others. Enjoyed video.

Good topic. Thanks for the info. I got the 2025R this year. I thought my time to say uncle would be to lift those tote cages full of stove wood. No problem lifting the totes with the self levelling loader. But I did not stack the wood, It was just thrown in loose.

Excellent assessment of this little bulldog tractor. With enough time, it will do most jobs. I called uncle when we had a 1600' driveway put in at our southern OH property, although I did spread the last 100 tons or so of gravel. I suspect I could have done the whole job given enough years! :)

Great conversation and well thought out. I bought my 1025r this May and I’ve been using it for business since June. I agree with the boundaries you’ve settled on. I haven’t had to call uncle yet, but one thing I’ve had to work around a couple times is tied to the light weight of the machine. I was extending a driveway to create a parking area in a slope for example, and would have loved to dig it out with the bucket, but even with the tires loaded, wheel weights, and backhoe on I still would spin out on the gravel when I would try to push into the ground. Ended up digging it out with the backhoe then removing the spoils with the bucket. It took it from a 1 hour job to 3, but it still got done.

I agree, I thought I was going to hear an upgrade was in order. I too have thought about upgrading but just can’t justify it when the 1025 slowly but surely completes the task. I sure am appreciative of being able to own one!

Yes I thought the same thing upgrade to a bigger tractor. If you have a 1 to 10 acre plot this tractor is big enough. I’ve never found anything it couldn’t do just may have to take two loads instead of one at a time. My 1025 hour is small but mighty I really do like it on my 6 acre mini farm.

Great video. I purchased a 1025r in 2018 after watching TTWT video’s. I realized how many things I could do on our 3 acre property. So the 1025r is perfect for my property! I have thought about upgrading to a 2038r but the cost of that upgrade is hard to justify for me. I have the belly mower, tiller, blade, brush hog and a couple of JD trailers. I’m been really happy with the 1025r. It’s a beast!!
I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos and seeing your multiple properties. I live about 100 miles from Gatlinburg and had rental properties there for a number of years. Your new cabin looks great and the views are incredible!! Our properties were in Pinnacle Vista and Cobbly Knob.

Those are all great points. I do a lot of work in small, confined areas so having the smallest tractor with a loader and 4wd were my 2 criterion for my tractor purchase. At 63 years old it's far better to go through a gate with a loader than with a shovel and wheel barrow ( Big tractors have their limits too ). I did all my work by hand until I turned 61 and have only had a Jd x575 with 45 loader for a year so the 1025r seems like a lot of tractor to me :). The quick attach feature is why the 1025 will be my next tractor. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the video, nicely done!
I started with a 2023 or something like that, it was awhile ago. I had the BH too but it just would dig through the hardpan in upstate NY's Catskills or the 8 foot holes I did for 24" sonotubes for my PV mounts. For the last ten years I've had a 3000 series with the 485 BH which is a real digger, nothing stops it.
What I found is that going up in tractors didn't cost that much more relative to the value you get. It's all paid for and over the years I haven't needed to rent anything, my tractor takes care of our 16 acres and anything I throw at it with no problems.
MY friend and neighbor just picked up a 1023, nice little tractor but I see he doesn't have split brakes and doesn't have the rear differential lock up which has gotten me out of jambs more than once.

Appreciate your candid comments and I've been pretty happy with my 1025R so far. We have five acres...most grass but at least half is the front pasture. You mentioned the 60" belly mower. I went with the belly mower for the front pasture area and the rear most areas of the property. I have a 52" zero turn for the yard around the house. It is sort of a toss-up as the zero turn is faster but the mower cuts a bit more with the extra 8" of cut. I will say that the belly mower plows through when the front pasture is a bit longer so that is a plus. I personally don't like a mowing deck larger that 60" unless you have a large amount of flat land and wide open spaces. Here is east Tennessee, we have many rock potrusions in the grassy areas and the larger decks are more difficult to maneuver around the rocks. Anyway, thanks again for the videos as this is my first tractor and the advice helps a novice.

I went with 1025r strictly for my side hustle of snow removal. Got the oem Mauser cab, box blade, loader, pallet forks with it. And most recently picked up a single row cultivator for my garden!!! Love it so far! I’m sure there will be a time when i wish I went larger!! But I only have a 7’ garage door and the Mauser cab just barely clears the garage opening!

My biggest limitation for the first 12 years with my 2305 was a lack of implements. The small implement market has changed greatly since 2006. Once I bought more attachments I found out that I could do a lot more. Then storage space became an issue so I added a 2000 sq ft pole barn. Now the biggest challenge is a lack of seat time. All good problems.

I have a 54" mid mount mower on my 1025R
I would have to say the limiting factors for it are the hidden suprises sometimes found in the grass, example; where i mow, I swear rebar and concrete grows from the soil, i can mow the same grass three or four times at the same height and the 5th time i hit 1/4" rebar sometimes 4 or 5 feet long or a big piece of concrete. Both which are limiting factors for the 1025R and midmount mower. Before anyone replys...yes i walk the area first. The other thing would be slop on ditches and such.

I removed a flowering cherry stump that took me 12 hours to get out of the ground. The 1025R did it but how much do you value your time? I removed 3 other white pine stumps that took about 2 hours each! When I had to remove 11 stumps, I rented a mini excavator. Completed in 2 days what would have taken about 2 weeks with the 1025R. I have used mine to move things I would have never thought or dreamed it would do! Point is it has its limits. But it is here and available when I need it.

Excellent points, well covered. Nice work! My little Deere is very similar - can do just about anything if you give it time. The only thing I can't do, is lift up a whole tote of firewood with my pallet forks. There's just not enough lift capacity with the loader. I happened over to your "channels" tab and saw you have a lot of the same favorite channels that we do. Mostly tractor stuff (TTwT, OWTM, Good Works, GP), and travel stuff (like KYD, Finding Our Someday, and Long Long Honeymoon). Great taste! :)

I very spread 22 tons of gravel in an hour. It is time to say uncle when you try to scrap grass off to make a garden . Not enough umpf to scrap the grass . Stumps are an issue but the back hoe is very useful. Used it all the time to pull saplings . Weld a grab hook on the bucket though. Called uncle to 27 inches of snow with the snow blower however removing snow with the bucket works great. Took some time to scrap the street with 4 inches of ice but got it cleared and picked up huge chunks of snow and ice. Get rim gard in the rear tires.

    Hello Tom,
In reference to your request for feedback on using a mid-mount mower on a compact or sub-compact tractor. I purchased a New Holland TC33D around 17 years ago and added a mid-mount mower (72") to the package. My original thought was why should I purchase another piece of equipment (zero turn) to maintain. Back then the mid-mower cost around $3500 which was still less cost than decent zero turn. I recently turned my lawn into something I can say I'm proud of and made the move this year to a high end zero turn. After mowing with the zero turn for an entire season I can honestly say the mid-mount mower on the compact tractor does a better-quality job overall. The mid-mount mower will float over any uneven areas of the lawn and the 4-wheel drive on the tractor prevents slipping and marring the turf when going up or down hills. Obviously, you have to make wide 3-point turns at the end of each row of cut but this is no different with the zero turn. The deck on the zero turn doesn't float over the lawn it suspends from the frame of the mower. The entire chassis will go up or down depending on the flatness of your lawn. This is why many people say a zero turn is more prone to scalping a lawn. As far as individuals stating a zero turn is faster in cutting a large area, I don't see the advantage. My lawn is 4 acres, mowing with the compact tractor I can drive as fast as I can (normally 2nd gear around 2600rpm) it will outpace the zero turn and cut better. My zero turn is a 28 hp, Ferris, 61" cut with turbo vac and it does cut fast but the faster you cut the more lawn you will scalp. The zero turn no matter how careful you are will tear turf on hills and turns.
Any way Tom I hope this helps to answer your question, of course this is only my opinion. I just started my own RUclips channel which highlights both pieces of equipment in use. I'm currently making a video comparing a zero-turn mower to a mid-mount mower on a compact tractor.
Keep up the good work. PS - I have a good zero turn mower with low hours for sale if anyone is interested.

Excellent assessment. I was looking at tractors in 2019. I looked hard at a Deere 1025r but ended up going orange with a bigger B2650. The dealer made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. We have two acres but we’re going to sell this house and buy 50 acres in the near future. I know I’ll need a bigger tractor, but still want a small one too for smaller chores. So I think im going to end up selling the kubota and get a 1025r and a bigger 4 or 5 series John Deere too.

I bought my 1025R earlier this year. I ended up with the loader, forks, MCS system, a JD weight box and the 60D mower deck. My only complaint is with the mid mount mower. Even at its highest setting, which is where I have to mow all the time, the deck tends to scalp and not give a sculpted, manicured cut. But my yard isn’t as level as I’d like either. I have a 20-yr old Simplicity Legacy with the 60” mower that does a much better job of cutting the grass. I also have the 47” two stage snow blower with the Simplicity. The goal was to sell the Simplicity but I want to get thru at least one winter to see if the 1025r can handle the snow removal. We’re in northern Indiana, out in the sticks, with a 360’ drive. The JD salesman says I won’t have any trouble pushing the snow to where I need it. We’ll see!!

At the time a TLB 1025r was $19,500. It’s very capable, but I didn’t realize how much use I would get out of it. Occasionally I’d like to have a larger tractor, but it’s hard to justify the cost in the long run. Sounds like you may use it far more than you think and larger might be more practical for you.

My friend has one of those with the mid Mount mower you can't do anything with the three-point hitch because when the mid Mount mower rises the rear hitch rises the three-point hitch rises and when the mower goes down the three-point hitch goes down to I told him that don't sound right but I guess he's too stubborn to read his owners manual. ;)

I have a smaller Kubota and you hit all the same limitations...
The tractor can never be big enough, but this size has been very good for me and the tasks at hand, but I have to hire out some of the bigger projects.

I have the same post hole digger on a ls mt122 (less horsepower) and I run a 12” at idle. Runs awesome, I wouldn’t shy away from a 16” at all. I’ve done mud with it, ran fence through woods with it, worked through landscape fabric with it and of course just normal ground too. The only thing I haven’t went through is rock, and that’s just cause I haven’t had to yet. The problem is everyone rev’s their engines to the moon to use them it seems. I never take mine off idle. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I can lift the 12” auger most times at idle (mud I do have to rev it up to lift because of suction) but I’ve never thought the post hole digger was too big for the tractor. I watched a lot of RUclips before I bought mine, and was totally scared because of what everyone was saying. I can confidently say everyone is wrong. My auger is my favorite thing to use.

The trick with stumps I came up with is to use my Milwaukee M18 Sawzall with a 12" or 9" pruning blade with 3 teeth per inch & carbide teeth (Milwaukee 12" Model# 48-00-5233 & 9" Model# 48-00-5232 or 12" Diablo Model# DS1203CP ) Just get the roots sort of cleaned off above & below and cut them...the dirt doesn't seem to bother the blade. I cut close to the stump as I can and then later, once the stump is out, I'll go back for the roots, cutting them every 2' or until they pull or dig out easy. Sometimes I'll cut the first 15" of roots out to give me room for the bucket...it all depends on the type of tree. Adding a few 5 gallon buckets of water to the hole will also make it easier to dig, although it's a little more sloppy. LOL Hope this helps some folks!

@@ataleofthreecabins1025 If you bought the "package deal" with a dozen or more blades in it I don't think there is a pruning blade in there, it needs to be a 3 TPI (teeth per inch carbide blade.) I'd try it, what do you have to loose? Oaks around here (CT) don't send roots very deep nor straight down, but there will be a lot of them to cut! Good luck!

I went to buy a new lawnmower today. I had my eyes on the x700 series. Imagine my surprise to find out that a x758 cost more than a 1025r. Already have an L series Kubota so I didn't need another front end loader and various attachments. But who can resist a good deal right?

Good video. I been looking to buy 1025r or the 2025r . the 1025r belongs to a friend EC low hours 15K loader and mower beck 62in. And a box blade. 2017 model one owner. The 2025 one owner with loader and set of forks 62 in deck and a vac system on it also 457 hrs. 15K. Looks to be in GC. I like the bigger tires on it over the 1025r. The 2025r is 2016 model. Hard to make up my mind.

Great video Tom. About 2 years ago you were trying to decide on possibly purchasing a John Deere 2038R as an upgrade to your 1025R. Now that some time has elapsed since then, what are your thoughts about moving up to a larger tractor now? By the sounds of this latest video it would appear that you have found your sweet spot with this 1025R.
I also have a 1025R and I would have to say that the lift capacity (for me), is it's biggest short coming. Many many times I have wanted to lift a pallet full of whatever and the 1025R fell short. The immediate solution was to unload part of the pallet and carry on. Just take smaller bites as it were. So you end up tailoring the jobs to suit the tractor and while it may take more time, for the most part one can still get the job done.
The second short coming of the 1025R would be the lift height of the 3 point arms, especially when using a middle buster and such. A solution for me was to buy another adjustable lift arm to match the right side and then you can crank up the lift by a few inches.
I had a 56 inch drive over mower deck, which I have since sold. They are an expensive option, and has been said many times before, you can buy another lawn tractor cheaper than buying the mid mount mower deck. After repeated mowings the tractor was starting to leave wear marks in the lawn due to the tractors weight and the R4 tires weren't helping matters either.
These John Deere 1025's really are the 'Swiss army knives' of sub compact tractors. We just need to match our expectations of the tractors abilities.
For me personally I think the 2025R would be a sweet spot for me or possibly an older 2520/2720, pre emission tractor, but for now we carry on with the 1025R.

I had to put a second adjustable link on for the same reason, and I still didn’t quite get the angle I needed to trailer some implements. I had to also flip the arms themselves. The attachment point for the links is off of center enough that when you flip them you get another 1-2” of lift height. It does make it so that the sway control linkage will barely reach though. Everything is a trade off, especially with these little beasts. I can drive on my trailer with anything now though.

John Deere recommends a One Series for up to 3 acres. You may want to look into a 3 series. A 3025D or E would not be too much more.

My 48" box blade works just fine for all my needs, even with the scarifiers down all the way. I think I could handle a 60" with just the box, but if the scarifiers are down I doubt it. It's not to hard to level or dress up a 10' wide drive, but a parking area would be tedious without something wider.

In 2017, i said UNCLE when i got the price for the john deere 1025R TLB. That`s why i bought a Kubota BX23s. Saved a TON of money that allowed us to buy other implements.
Our BX was $19,000K out the door. ZERO percent financing. The Kubota factory was giving out free 60"MMM with the tractor that year. Plus the Kubota dealers treated you like a human.
I also didnt like the fact that the JD loader main frames are made in CHINA! I also didnt like the fact that the JD backhoes are made in MEXICO. Lots of CHINESE parts on the JD`s!

so far like it. few things I would change on it but overall nice tractor. looked at the 1025R and well didn't want to pay the extra and local dealer didn't have stock.
either way I believe the 1025R has close to same lifting maybe a bit more. the mahindra is just under 700lbs. that is what I'd change the most. for me.
