Thank you for watching our video! The count down is still on till we leave on our journey, but this is a big moment for us. Did you like how she looked in that gun metal grey? Should we keep her this color in the end or what color do you think would be the best? Also, what do you think about the design of the boat now that you can see her with her mast and in the water?
I think alu boats should be painted. We paint steel and wooden boats to make them attractive and I don't see why aluminium should be some kind of exclusive exception.
If I didn’t know any better I would think you are an angel from heaven the way you make it sound 🥴riggings over 10 years old… probably 30 years old.Glad you’re so happy 😀 but you have sooo far to go😮I really admire your on what you accomplished so far.
Since your boat is probably now very top heavy, have you considered adding temporary ballast to keep it from rolling over on the trip South? Something easy to remove maybe sand bags or 55 gallon barrels filled with water. I like options and also plan to have a short vertical lip added to back edge of swim platform so I can clamp on my outboard motor for emergency use.
We will have lots of cargo on the inside so it won’t be totally empty. Including our construction equipment, paint cans, etc. We have received lots of questions about weight distribution so we will be putting together a video on this soon so we can explain the nuances of how we balanced everything. Keep an eye out for that! We are debating how we will use the outboard engine. Clamping it to the platform is a good idea.

Yes, I noticed the spreaders straight away. I wondered if the mast was on backwards, but I've learned watching a few rebuild videos, that people know what they are doing - mostly.😁
Looking back that was such a funny moment! We were doing so many things at the same time that when we looked up and something didn't look right, your head goes to the worst place. Turns out the installer thought they could just rotate them but the spreaders had to be fully removed and flipped.
@@lahakai Yes, it's funny when that happens and then you second guess yourself. I was watching one YT yacht build (won't mention which one) and I thought the installer was installing the boomvang upside down. I thought 'no, they know what they are doing'. then later, it was the right way round. Question everything that doesn't look right.
Absolutely LOVE the font you used for the boat's name.....just PERFECT.....also love the happiness and smiles on your faces....fun to see Ben on your video as well....good man he is. Cheers!
It's not done ! Wow if you only knew, I had a steel 50' cutter-rigged sailboat , the work is never done. I suggest drill all the holes your going to drill in the steel and finish all the welding that is needed , then disassemble everything down to just the steel , and here's were the fun begins, start in the bow sand blast all the way to the stern with out stopping as soon as that's done start with the epoxy primer , stem to to stern and then the outside same thing ! Top coat inside and out then reassemble ! And then you've got about 10 years and you've got to do it all again ! I didn't have the energy to do it twice , I sold mine at the 8 year mark ! I got out just in time , but I'm rooting for you I can't wait to see your finished boat sailing and experience some of the adventures you're going to take ! I'd say good luck but the truth is it takes hard work and a little bit of planning and a giant chunk of cash .Have fun people !

It would be amazing if you could help out 😁 but your well wishes are more than enough! Commenting and liking out videos makes a big contribution - we really appreciate it and it keeps us motivated! And you are right, for all the setbacks we've had, they've been more than compensated with the amazing people we've met (online and in person) and incredible things that have happened along the way. Wow it’s coming along and that’s awesome:) I also watch sailing yaba and odd life crafting. The boat is looking good and even though there is still a lot to go I know it’s going to be beautiful in the end. I’m very sure you will be in great hands when you get there. And with friends there and all of us cheering you on it’s going to be okay:)👍
Hello! That is quite a resume you have there! And it is a privilege to have you joining our journey. We look forward to hearing your comments especially in our community posts. We will be getting to carpentry soon and would love your feedback.
What a unuque looking sailboat. I just happened on your channel today. Count me as a new subsciber and I am looking forward to viewing your previous videos and the ones to come. I am a Yaba follower as well so it was cool to see Ben show up to crew for you. Wishing you success on your journey through the life you have chosen on LAHAKAI.
I remember Ben from @Sailingyaba sending me WhatsApp videos of the day Lahakai got back in the water and the preparations for the journey south. I like to see the official version of that day(s) again.
If I am at sea needing rescue I want a color easy to find. Gray is way down on my list of preferred colors. I also like to be unique and there are too many white boats. Maybe a diagonal strip on the hull like the US Coast guard and some easy to see color edges on the deck and cabin top and sail.
Did notice the spreaders but did not want to be a neah sayer & could not make out the sail track. Amazing work for just 6 months, she looks as good as you all do.
Good eye! We tried just rotating them at first but they were clearly backwards so they had to be removed. When the shrouds were removed, the little clamp at the end of the spreader fell on to the deck. We all gasped and were amazed that it didn't roll into the water! 😅
I am hooked! looking forward to following your dreams and outlook on life goals and dreams. Best wishes from Boston. Also a fan of Ben & MP who I was able to meet at the Annapolis Boat show in October.
Welcome Bill! So glad to have you here and we are thrilled you are on the journey with us!! We would have loved to go to Anápolis as well, maybe next year 😁🙌🙏
anti-climatic. Your boat isn't sinking or has the possibility of cracking up out at sea. The Yaba` trip was pretty insane 😆 That is a nice looking boat you have there, I may just have to binge watch episodes 1-10 now.
We saw that episode! And that's how we knew Ben was the perfect person to sail with us. Though if we'd have a choice on how to sail, we would take anti-climactic over sinking 😝... but don't knock sailing in an empty tin can til you try it, it's not as glamorous as it sounds 😂😂😂
Yes It's all good and well send out lots of love to your "Patrons" but please don't forget us that can't support your lifestyle or rather dreams but like to participate by watching as many videos as possible, I'm a pensioner and can't send money but have been a fan of Duka and Roberta since building their little container house and then the boat project and that led to Ben and MP when Duka first introduced us when Ben was having pump issues trying to keep the water out of Yaba before motoring her to where they are now. This goes for Ben and MP as well, Don't forget about your subscribers. Just imagine the money I'd be in for if I was a patron to all I watch like Beau & Brandy, Odd Life Crafting, Sailing Alma, Sailing Atticus II, Sailing GBU, Sailing Hakuna, Sailing Lady Africa, Sailing Lavagabonde, Sailing Miss Lone Star, Sailing Uma, Sailing Vessel Delos, Sailing Yabá, Salt & Tar and last but not least is SV Seeker. Yes, I like to watch and download a lot of sailing videos. It was my dream to sail once but now I'm too old so I get a kick out of watching you guys and all you are getting out of the sailing life. It's sad that Duka couldn't use tangerine dream for the name of Odd. Lots of love, Pete.
We couldn't possibly forget our subscribers, such as yourself! It's people like you that are THE whole reason we post videos. And we are sure we can speak for all of those wonderful sailing channels you named when saying we are all greatly appreciative of each and every subscriber who tunes and brightens our lives with your comments, feedback and encouraging words. These seemingly tiny acts, like liking a video and saying a few words, mean so much to us and go a long way for us creators! And we think it's so special when we get to help others live out their dreams (As you know, we are really big on dreaming!) So, let's go, Pete! You are never too old to be on our (virtual) crew!! And we will take you to finishing this boat and around the world on this wonderful journey with us. 😁⛵🌎
Is that our R10 green note i just saw in your coin Jar😀? Lahakai is looking awesome on the water, your hard work and determination really showing. Wishing you guys a safe trip to Lahakai's new home base.
haha could be! That jar was filled with every single coin and bill you could think of, so chances are high! Thanks for your well wishes! We're going to do some preparations and then we're off! 🤞⛵️
You might have heard this before but I think if you add the word sailing to your channel's name, you might attract more viewers. Good looking boat. Good luck! 😎
@@lahakai, he’s right you know. I’ve seen the title many times but always ignored it because I thought it was about coffee or yoghurt or some other random food.
I'm kind of in the same boat y'all are. I have a 35 ft fiberglass boat that I have to totally gut. Because of termites hate everything inside. The rigging's good. Haven't got to the motor yet. Because of the debris in the way. And I'll run out of money so I can get a job now. Wish I luck.
Congratulations. No leaks and she's floating. That's a very good start! I guess you will install all the windows and hatches before you sail down to the south? And what about the engine? Will you be using a small outboard for this first trip?
Yes! Thanks! It was quite a joy to see her in the water! For the windows, we are just going to board them up because we plan on sandblasting the hull when we arrive. For the engine we found a used outboard engine that we can resell once we arrive.
The new topsides and dodger have modernized the look of the boat plus it looks sharp in gunmetal grey. I can just see dark tinted windows too, with a steel boat if you want fewer below the water hull penetrations later you can use a single sea chest but you also want to be able to get weed and shell growth out of them so they can be larger. RUclips "Odd Life Crafting" to see an example
Do not sandblast get a tercoo disk and a powerdrill. We did an 8 meter steel ship with two people in a week and used 2 disks. Budget tip from another lost soul.
Ah this is a very interesting tool. This would work for the exterior definitely and we will have this in mind next time we need to strip paint. On the inside we had so many little nooks and crannies, would a tercoo disk be suitable for that?
@@lahakai it would wear down the tool quickly as it is not meant for edges. It will work though so you can try after you finish the outside. But is beats sandblasting a lot
Congratulations! I'm very happy about you guys it is a great accomplishment :) At the same time I'm asking myself if you can in this time and money build a brand new boat? Any thoughts about this?
Thanks so much!! We've had many thoughts about this as we go along. If you've been following our story, we didn't expect to have this much construction when we started, but when pandoras box was opened, there was not much do to but to finish the job. That being said: Time wise we are still significantly lower than it would take to build a new boat (counting actual construction time). Money wise, you must take into account that the location of our build makes a big impact. Cost of things, price of living, labor costs, are all different than say the USA or Europe. Not counting the fact that we have had some setbacks that were about logistics that were a result of the miss lead original sale. This build is still cheaper than building a brand new boat in Brazil. Now, we were in this project not to just have a boat. We really did want to build something and learn about all aspects of a sailboat. A little less construction on the hull would have been nice, but perhaps that was part of the learning process 😛
Great videos! Why are you putting so many anodes on the boat? If you have to many you can set up reverse currents an you may start losing paint below the water line.
Thanks so much! Yes we are reading about this now and we will do a final calculation to see whats the correct amount required. They are just on stainless steel posts so easy to remove if needed.
I'm guessing the mast protrudes into the cabin, versus just fastened to the cabin top, but it loos to be the latter (rigging supports it)? If I heard correctly, you need to replace the rigging every 10 years or was it also in bad shape? ;-)
The mast is deck stepped. We show all the modification we made to the mast and upper deck in episode 9 if you are interested! The original owner had the boat for 10 years without changing any rigging. We even found a turnbuckle inscribed with a date that was older than the boat. Sadly we lost it. Nothing was in bad shape though, the boat had been sitting for the decade unused. But it certainly was time to get new everything!
Not a stupid question at all! So moving by truck to Santa Catarina is about 700 miles away passing through steep and curvy mountain ranges with poor highways. Our boat would also sit very tall on the truck bed so the height would be an issue in some places. Not only would it be cheaper to go by sea, we also liked the idea of a good adventure!
Are you leaving those monstrous davits on? It looks like a structure poached off a fishing trawler, it's so big and looks way out of place. It really does nothing for the looks of that boat
Thought it when you renamed a boat and first put her in the water you're supposed to christen her with champagne?? I don't think you'll like the battleship gray color when you are living aboard in hot and humid climates.. I personally love a dark blue boat with a gold stripe or silver and a buckskin or white deck..
😆 this is kind of a false start since she's still under construction. So, we thought we'd keep the champagne on ice till she's officially done. The color really isn't very dynamic with the single color grey, a stripe or something would definitely break up the monotony. Lot's of possibilities still!
I like the idea, the drive and the ppl behind this project, but the boat is and always will be one of the ugliest and most impractical ever build. So why? It is as my mom said, some like the dad and some like the son ...
WHO WROTE THIS DIALOGUE? I am sorry and do not want to offend, but it is terrible. You do not get this diatribe on successful RUclips channels. Try being more natural and less from a terrible script. So much better when you spoke to the camera from the heart and not the script, and the second half was so much better than the dribble in the first half.
Yes, keep the color scheme, eventually “make a statement” by painting the verticals on your “house” in a darker gray
I'm not fond of any gray color for a boat. It's a no-color for me. But that's your boat and if you like her this way, then it's the best choice!
Congrats!!! I think you should move away from the grey color. Makes it look like a militaty vessel.
this boat is perfekt also with the color, its full with your ideas and this is the best.
I think alu boats should be painted. We paint steel and wooden boats to make them attractive and I don't see why aluminium should be some kind of exclusive exception.

Good luck! 😎
We've been thinking about this for a little while now... You just might be right about that
@@lahakai, he’s right you know. I’ve seen the title many times but always ignored it because I thought it was about coffee or yoghurt or some other random food.
I’ve now subscribed 👍.
We have taken the good advice! Let’s see what happens 😁
@@lahakai, I’m positive it will give your channel a boost 👍.
Que trampo bacana!
Nunca tinha visto embarcação utilizando aço comum. SAE 1020 tipo chapa preta mesmo? Ou aço naval tipo galvanizado com liga especial...
Parabéns pelo trabalho e obrigado por compartilhar
Top drops👏👏🤙👏👏
I'm kind of in the same boat y'all are. I have a 35 ft fiberglass boat that I have to totally gut. Because of termites hate everything inside. The rigging's good. Haven't got to the motor yet. Because of the debris in the way. And I'll run out of money so I can get a job now. Wish I luck.
Good luck to you too! Are you positing videos of your build online?
Congratulations. No leaks and she's floating. That's a very good start!
I guess you will install all the windows and hatches before you sail down to the south? And what about the engine? Will you be using a small outboard for this first trip?
Yes! Thanks! It was quite a joy to see her in the water! For the windows, we are just going to board them up because we plan on sandblasting the hull when we arrive. For the engine we found a used outboard engine that we can resell once we arrive.
Wow 😮 another Brazilian boat 🛥️ sailors. After watching OddLife & Sailing Yaba have to subscribe Lahakai. The boat looks weird for the shape. 🤔
I'm very happy about you guys it is a great accomplishment :)
At the same time I'm asking myself if you can in this time and money build a brand new boat?
You can probably find a used sandblaster somewhere and I’m sure the boat yard has a compressor sandblasters are cheap here in America
Wish it was that easy! Where we are located sandblasting is not permitted. Perhaps if we were on our own private land we could.
Iv missed you guys, where are you???.
Cabin boy
But it certainly was time to get new everything!
just a stupid question: why didn't you bring it to the sandblasters on land on the back of a truck?
Not a stupid question at all! So moving by truck to Santa Catarina is about 700 miles away passing through steep and curvy mountain ranges with poor highways. Our boat would also sit very tall on the truck bed so the height would be an issue in some places. Not only would it be cheaper to go by sea, we also liked the idea of a good adventure!
Helt otroligt att lägga ner så mycket arbete och pengar på en en så liten båt som är ett vrak!
😝
where this Marina is located?
It was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Cheers!
Are you leaving those monstrous davits on? It looks like a structure poached off a fishing trawler, it's so big and looks way out of place. It really does nothing for the looks of that boat
Sell the sailboat as is and buy a river boat at Belem or Manaus. Start hauling supplies to settlements on the Amazon and other rivers.
Can you ship stuff to where Yaba is
From Rio de Janeiro? yes we can
Thought it when you renamed a boat and first put her in the water you're supposed to christen her with champagne?? I don't think you'll like the battleship gray color when you are living aboard in hot and humid climates.. I personally love a dark blue boat with a gold stripe or silver and a buckskin or white deck..
😆 this is kind of a false start since she's still under construction. So, we thought we'd keep the champagne on ice till she's officially done. The color really isn't very dynamic with the single color grey, a stripe or something would definitely break up the monotony. Lot's of possibilities still!
Cheap Trick
ahahhaa 😂, you recruited the reinforest destroyer as a crew !!! Just ask him to leave some threes in the forest before finishing his ugly boat !
Work in progress and I think they are doing great. Now over to your channel to see how it done. Lol
i know you will made it 😊
You said it here! It's destiny now!
