I'm first generation my father is from Sicily and in his 80s, my family has been in Harlem since they came over in the 1930s-40's. All we ever knew was each other and black people. Words like that were thrown around like nothing back in the day but there wasn't hate behind it. Everybody had their words for Italians and white people as well but people knew the difference between when these words were meant for hate,as a term of endearment or just a adjective. At the end of the day all we had was each other in the neighborhood and even when we were fighting with each other we would all fall in line to protect each other from outsiders. You have the other group of Italians that never lived amongst anyone that have been here a few generations that have no real culture or identity that try to emulate us with the stupid mannerisms that look like bad impressions, the pronunciation of certain words, the horrible clothes,etc and they're the racist assholes. A bunch of idiots that have seen good fellas too many times and live their life emulating it just because their name ends in a vowel. This is where all the snitches are bred. Italians and Sicilians hate these people and ironically so do the white people they think they're part of.
