  • How to identify trees in winter, when there are no leaves?
In this video I go through how you can identify 9 common trees that grow here in Norway. I consider this to be key knowledge for beginner foragers. Every tree has its own particular uses, and also has an impact on what grows in the are around it. Every forager should know these trees in my opinion. So here is my beginners guide to tree identification!
And maybe you are out to tap sap from trees these days, then you need to know which tree to tap from!
The 9 common trees I go through are:
Birch (Betula) we have various types here in Norway so I did not go in depth about the type.
    Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)
    Alder (Alnus glutinosa or incana)
    Goat willow (Salix caprea)
    Oak (Quercus robur or petraea)
    Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)
    Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia)
    Aspen (Populus tremula)
    Red Elder (Sambucus racemosa)
    DISCLAIMER:
I go through many of the uses of these trees in the video, and most of them need to be done with caution. Remember to do research on the proper uses of Acorns, rowan leaves/berries and Elder flowers. All these can be toxic if done wrong.
I am not a professional on the topics here, I only share my personal knowledge as an inspiration for you. All foraging and consuming of wild plants is at your own risk. Maria og skogen/Maria and the forest does not take any responsibility for harm that may occur from this. Always do your research using multiple trusted sources, and consult your doctor before eating something from the wild. If pregnant, elderly or on some kind of medication you should take special care.

...I'm a real true beginner, with trees and plants in general... but I think trees in particular are magic... apart from that they provide, by their functioning in their life, the air we humans breath always as long as we are alive... I want to watch this video over and over for some time, then buy some booklets... as far as I know Linneus assigned Latin names to plants... may the first big classification we small humans tried to give to this miracle of the plant world... thank You, Maria❤

Such a fantastic video! It’s so fun to identify the local trees. I can drive along and point them out and my kiddos pretend to be impressed 😅 I live with several black walnut ( Juglans nigra ) trees that I’ve considered tapping. We also have some massive mulberry trees ( Morus alba ) I enjoy eating the berries that are just turning purple. They can also make delicious jam. I’m hoping to plant the elderberry if I can get a baby shoot from my coworkers farm this spring.

Thank you! If I have kids one day I will do the same haha, I think it is something that is useful to know a bit about, and they do not teach it in school anymore. Wow, we do not have black walnut or mulberry here sadly, but I love mulberries when I can get a hold of them.

Another excellent video Maria, and so soon after the last one too. I do love trees, but am useless at identifying them. In fact the only things I have identified in my own garden are a buddleia and some leylandii trees, but I will look more closely now.
I would love to see the behind the scenes footage of how you created the very surprising scene at 1:38 ! Oh the efforts you make to bring us such wonderful videos Maria. I do hope you returned to ground level safely. My word, did you bring a ladder with you ?!!

Thank you Mark. I get you, its not easy I think. I think we have many of the same trees in Norway and UK though so I hope this might be helpful :-).
Haha, yes that will probably be up on my Patreon too at some point, I am glad I have Bendik in my life, who does not say no to wierd ideas. No ladder, haha.
