The reason I don’t like these auctions is because when I was in high school, my family got evicted from our apartment and we had to put everything we owned in a storage unit because we were moving in with my cousin and she didn’t have room at her house. My mom got behind on the payments and then the storage company eventually auctioned off all of our things bc she couldn’t afford to pay it on time. That was about 8 years ago and I’m still saddened about all of my belongings, keepsakes and childhood memories I lost there. It was probably junk to the buyer but everything to me.
Ive been through this more than once in my life. At the end of the day yes they are just things.. yes some of the items are not replaceable and have value but.. it happens to a lot of us. Yes it does suck and im sorry you went througb this. Believe me.. i know the loss and the feeling all too well.
On another episode of "Hope spends enormous amount of money for our entertainment" I just want to say, THANK YOU for doing so much (like literally, SO MUCH) for us. I discovered you only this month but I've been bingeing your videos like crazy and every one of them is so wholesome
That’s a common trick where they go through and take the new value items esp guns and leave the empty boxes. One person found the contact details of the previous owners and they confirmed that the storage unit had been sold 18 months previously, and had contained items. Proving that the storage owner had been sold it twice!
As a buyer of lockers since the 1990's where a 40' unit would sell for only a one dollar, yes it was a set up. But to include your time and travel makes it a real deal for the seller. Never bid on something you can not see in person is my best advise. Will watch more of your endeavors...thanks for sharing.
Yea for anyone else this is great advice. For Hope, she makes enough on this video no matter how successful the unit is or not that it’s worth it for her.
hard to believe anyone would go out of their way to save that many empty cases and then have them placed like that. The storage facility was def scamming.
The “old” barbies are pushing me over the edge for it being a scam, a lot of idiots look at that stuff and think a 90s collectors barbie is like a lot & try to price them for like 750 dollars but theyre mass produced & bc theyre fancy display dolls so everyone kept them in the box and in good conditions… the ones that actually sell are 20-30 bucks MAX even if theses a ton of LISTINGS for $50000
I have my empty cases in a storage unit, its pretty common. I also have all the boxes for my high end electronics there too. But yeah, you can assume that any guns that were really there were gone by the time the pictures were taken. That is the problem with these remote auctions, PLENTY of time for the owners, employees, and others to cherry pick things that are in containers.
Yea its called seeding, basically trying to make the locker look better by placing expensive items and selling it, but it's just the boxes in the end. I don't know if you watched storage wars, but they got into trouble for doing such a thing.
Wow, I learned something new. I never knew the person could purposely put empty boxes and fake expensive bags into a storage unit and can scam people with it. The storage place only gets to keep the unpaid fees and the rest from the auction goes back to the prior storage unit owner. I always thought whatever value that was auctioned, the storage place gets to keep 100%. I guess there are scams everywhere. But this one is more like a legal scam since no one is forcing you to put in a bid for the storage unit.
I've bought units I've never heard of this everything that is in the unit is the buyers 100 % were in from now it's up to the buyer of the unit whether he gives personal stuff back or not I've always turned in there personal stuff but other stuff is mine.
As an online reseller we were amazed at the items that you said had no value. However a unit with this much inventory would have been awesome to go through though
Even you were scammed and lost a lot of money, you are still cheerful and very generous! My husband and I love watching your channel and we also learn a lot from it! Keep up your great sense of humor and outlook in life!
You are so generous, the world needs more people like you. My daughter bought me a coach bag for Christmas and it looks beautiful with my Amazon dress from my sister. When you are financially struggling due to medical bills any high end or low end item is priceless.
I ask the Lord to provide my needs and he always does, sometimes he surprises me with unexpected blessings because he loves me. I hope all is well with you.
When my aunt passed away her storage unit company literally suggested to my brother clearing out anything he wanted and then selling the unit rather than cleaning it out completely. My aunt was a hoarder, but the cleanest most meticulously organized hoarder in human history. Her hoard was labeled and a lot of it was good quality cleaning products or around the house stuff and most of her hoard was donated to a woman's shelter and a homeless shelter respectively. A food pantry took her non perishable food hoard. The storage unit sale resulted in my brother making $25 which he gave me to cover the stuff I had picked up from the store 2 days before she passed and she had wanted me paid for. She knew she was dying and made sure everything that we could want was at the front of the unit and everything we could dump was at the back. She didn't tell us she was dying until she needed hospice care. It's been months and I still miss her. If you want to remember my favorite family member take a picture of the people you love. My Aunt Lynie certainly did and the last day I saw her she asked me to rearrange the photos she brought so she could see them better. She had committed every photo she cared about to memory and still brought them with her to hospice because she loved to take photos of the people she cared about.
They have a new storage wars (called storage hunters)!!! They have a group that goes around the country on the show now - last episode I saw, they went to Hawaii!!! It was kind of strange bc the units were like old bunkers that private ppl rented out- kind of cool though (usually they are at normal storage places though)
In order to sell “boring” storage units, sometimes the sellers will actually place items to make it look like you’ll end up with something good. That’s absolutely what they did with the Apple boxes. I’m willing to bet the owner of the units keeps all their Apple boxes or expensive product packaging just to plant them to sell the units faster. Side note: I would DIE for those platform crocs. I collect rainbow high dolls and one of the dolls comes with those exact crocs. Just got her for Christmas
I gave my daughter the 1996 Holiday Barbie this year. (The front one on the shelf in the first shot of the unit) She’s been in her box for like 25 years in a closet at my moms house. Now she’s living her life out of the box finally! We all held on thinking they’d be worth something but this one is not worth more than like $20. My 5 year old loves her.
I’m happy to see they aren’t worth a ton, because I had one of the special edition Barbies and I waited a few years until I gave into the urge and finally took her out to play with, which was much more fun then her just sitting in a box.
I gave a couple of my special boxed barbies to my oldest when she was 8. A couple family members lost their marbles🤣Like guys they aren't worth much, it's a toy. The giant happy smiles are worth letting barbie escape her boring box tomb lol.
I'd love to get a storage unit to go through. Not even for any value, I just love being nosey at other peoples stuff 😂 although I dont think I'd feel scammed if i purchased this (I wouldn't purchase at that price!) and there was nothing in the expensive boxes, because I'd automatically assume that stuff would not have been left in the boxes. I'd have thought that would be common sense to not expect those kind of things would be in there. 😂
And people save boxes of the nicer things. I think they feel if they resell it later it has more value in box. Also they have the Barbies in boxes so that makes sense
In 1994 I was 16, and my grandma gave me a holiday Barbie. I was pretty disappointed, but I thought to myself.... "that's okay, I'll just keep her in the box and sell her someday as a collector's item." That afternoon, as everyone was playing with their new toys and Christmas gifts, grandma looks at me and says... "aren't you going to take out your new doll and brush her pretty hair???" Blink. Blink. Yes, grandma, I am.... And I did. Buh-bye collector's item. LMAO.
My daughter was born in 95 & her 1st Barbie was the 96 Christmas Barbie. Of course she opened the Barbie when she was 4 ish. Was always her fav even after losing the shoes within minutes. Lol
I had almost all of these, I was five in '96 and my grandma and I bonded over barbies, so I would let her know which I liked best and she would surprise me with a few.
Yeah, I would be careful about looking to what's listed on ebay or etsy for what things are actually worth. I've seen people trying to sell their base sets of Marvel trading cards from the 90s on those sites for thousands and thousands of dollars. Take it from me, someone who collects Marvel cards, they don't even come close to being worth that.
I did not realize that if the unit sold for more than the balance owed, the rental customer would receive the balance. I have to agree, this unit looks like a set up. But, I am glad the video was shared so other people can see and learn from it.
Please do your research on some of these things first. You would be surprised what will sell. Also, you can get those real croc men's shoes resoled and cleaned up and sell them for a good amount.
@@di3393 Also she technically is trying to earn money, because 1: She loses money if the she brought it for me, but the items weren't up to that price and 2: Like I said, she tends to put these items on her stores and sell them

Omg I was shocked that you spent $10,000 on a storage locker!!!!😱😅 I was getting so mad as you went through all the boxes that were empty. And then when the storage locker people said that the person probably abandoned it on purpose 🙄. But I do love how optimistic you were throughout the whole video, even when opening empty boxes, you would still do so with a smile on your face and an optimistic attitude. Also Tyler’s excitement for the hot wheels mega course thing was adorable 😆. Still a great video to watch and you were able to donate a bunch of clothes and toys which is always wonderful. Thank you Hope for always staying Hopeful ❤️😄
I'm sorry but I think the storage unit was lying to her and they actually staged it with those empty boxes. I've never heard of a storage unit giving money to a customer after they abandoned their until....how would they give them the money? They obviously had been trying to contact this person for months to try and get them to pay the bill before they sold the unit so why in the world would they take even more time to try and convince this person they are giving them money.....they lied to you and they are the ones who staged it. I also should mention that I love about a hour away from Baltimore so I know these storage companies well and I never got my money back from that storage unit I let go.
Oh Hope, you need to use the sold & completed section to get actual values for dolls. Most of those holiday Barbie’s are only worth $20 if you’re lucky 💀
Yes, you can only go by the SOLD listings. My mom still thinks beanie babies are worth a ton on eBay because of the high listing prices…and thought the same thing about Disney VHS movies…people can list an item for whatever price they want, but it has to sell at that price to be a valid indicator of value! Also, don’t forget the bubble wrap, boxes, bubble mailer envelopes, scotch tape, shipping tape, and printer paper and ink, oh and gas money to drive to the post office if you live in an area where walking isn’t an option… oh and 13% + 30 cents per transaction in eBay fees… it really adds up!
This is for entertaiment purposes, she is always going to inflate the numbers. This video video is not for resellers to learn. cmom people, just enjoy the video. I though since she opened the door that the unit was staged. The bags were on top and they had no dust over them. thre is always dust in storages.
You gave it a shot. As with alot of things if we take a risk, and learn from it. You are very giving, hoping to find good deals, but also thinking of what you can donate to other. Keep up the positivity, and good work.
Louis Vuitton's fabric never cuts off the "LV" logo on the fabric. So if you ever see a LV bag, look on the side of it to see if any of the LV's print is cut off by the stitching. That's one way you can tell it's fake.
@Emiko Castillo. Although I do not help make LV bags my friend does, they explained to me that this is untrue, as well as I also looked at all my LV bags and they were cut off 😂 It might have been the other way round, but from what according to them saying I think there’s no way of telling.
This is so good as a cautionary tale tho. For anyone who's trying to make some money and have watched shows where everything goes well. And I can imagine other creators who maybe came upon this same situation but threw in something of high value to create excitement. To thanks for being real with us and for donating
Of course. You think someone will leave stuff worth thousands of dollars in a storage unit. Can happen in some cases for example the owner goes in prison and cant do nothing about it.
@@haralds4145 Yeah, or they are cutoff in someway or just didn't pay attention to the fact that they owed money. Or are in another country for a long time, maybe even stuck for some reason.
I actually work at CubeSmart and we are not allowed to open anything when taking pictures for auctions. So unfortunately they can be empty but we dont know. We list them as boxes not as the product thats pictured on the box.
@@kristenmagann6172 I'm actually surprised there are not laws about buying guns from warehouses/ storage units. You would think that if a gun requires registration, you couldn't simply buy them in a large lot.
the auction house, the storage place employees, and anyone that 'looked' at that unit would have taken things from it... seen it all too often when people are 'scammed' into thinking otherwise, and the storage unit place would surely have known all the boxes were empty, so it wouldnt surprise me if theyre running the scam or profiting from it in more ways than one.... its just basic human nature!!
The first LV bag is called the Ellipse, and it’s vintage, so there’s no way the leather detail would be that bright beige color anymore. Immediately knew it was fake.
okay so at 8:13 she shows a bag that looks like a phone, I have that purse I think I paid $60 Canadian for it. The best part of the bag (at least the on I have) is that you can plug it in to your phone and talk on it. Super cool find.
I'm sitting here thinking that maybe this is the year I scrape up $15-$20 for a storage unit and you just taught me a MASSIVELY important lesson! Now I know that if there are lots of high-end boxes clearly visible in an otherwise generic unit... well, there's that old saying about if something looks too good to be true, etc. etc. :-) Thanks, and happy new year!
Wait, I don’t understand how someone “purposely abandons” it but still gets the money?? Doesn’t it go towards the months unpaid and the storage unit company?
I think the employees there said it in the video, what they get for the unit usually ends up being more than they owed, so what's owed for the unit is taken out and then the people who abandoned it get what's left over.
@@agnesgoesadventuring2227 and often times they show up to remove all of the real goods before they are no longer in good standing with the storage place so you're left with junk.
I'm confused about that though- why would the storage company give the rest of the money to the person who abandoned it when they couldn't get them to pay on the first place?
@@amyburt9193 Some folks have suggested in other videos (and other places online) that the storage places set up these "abandoned" lockers to make money on the side. 🤷🏼♀
This has been a tough holiday season and literally the only thing that has gotten me through is the joy your videos bring me. I love you optimism but also your honesty. You bring me so much happiness more than you could ever know! ❤❤❤
I work at a storage site and have seen some interesting units go up for auction. I honestly hadn’t thought about people abandoning units hoping to get money from it since I’ve only seen it happen once. Most often I see people just abandon what they don’t want to keep without realizing that whatever the auction doesn’t cover goes to collection. So….if you think of doing this scam just realize it can become a big gamble.
Living vicariously through you because I could never handle buying one of these unit and potentially turn up empty. I wonder if the sellers of these units place boxes/fakes of items to get people to purchase.
Hey Hope, My husband and I buy storage units on the east coast lol and saw that you got the unit in Jessup MD. We had this one on our watch list FOREVER!! I actually went up to you during VidSummit to ask you about the lost cargo place you used. I'm sorry you got the unit but at the same time glad you got it so that we could see what was in it lol
The brandy doll is a dream!!! And the barbies and cars and dream house😍. The guitar and keyboard and Foosball, pokemon and consoles! Are like things i either wanted or total nostalgia!!!
I believe a general rule to follow when bidding online and relying solely on pictures / videos is that the Seller will "stage" certain items to get your attention. As with most auctions, opening bids are intentionally lower to attract more bidders and run the price up as they compete.
You're just the most fun, optimistic person, Hope! I adore how you deal with things, good and bad, and share your $$ to both those who need it, and those who support you (giving back thanks) 🥰
I have a 2000's collector's Barbie. I haven't opened the packaging. I got it brand new off the shelf as a present so it still has everything that it originally came with. The only thing that brings it's worth down is the fact that the packaging is damaged from moving around a lot since I was 5-6 years old. I'm almost 21, so I've had it for a long time.
When your looking at eBay prices you should look at what they sold for not for what they are listed for. You can list anything for any amount but when you click sold you see what people are actually paying for the item.
I enjoy your videos because of your optimistic attitude and your authenticity of enjoyment, I also appreciate your generosity. One thing positive about this storage unit was how clean and organized it was, that was amazing compared to most units I've seen on videos. I love your sweet dog
Okay but some of those shoes could have still been worth something even though they were used. Also definitely need those hot wheels, my nephew has been obsessed with them lol
I agree, makes me sad... && That's why our landfills are filled to the brim. Wished ppl used stuff as it should be instead of something having a scuff and ppl trashing them.
yeah they werent even that used. u cant sell them to collectors but u can for sure sell them to a sneaker head that desperately wants a shoe that isnt easily found. i know none of those sell here id gladly buy them used
The jesus painting is "The Senior Partner" by Nathan Greene. He sells them as limited editions, depending on the quality the buyer got it could be a 100-200$ print or worth over a thousand, not counting framing. Its not as common as his medical jesus pieces so actually a pretty fun find!
Yeah looked like the locker belongs to a black person and a lot of that would definitely have value that is a bit more niche but definitely could’ve been resold like the Jordan’s and retro jerseys some of the paintings if they were actual paintings and not prints.
I have just discovered your channel recently, you guys are amazing and make such great content! So generous and so genuine, your smile is infectious Hope! Me and my 6 year old daughter love watching you from Australia. Keep up the great work guys ❤
God bless you! I'm so OCD that clutter would drive me nuts. I'd have to have a lot of caffeine to tackle that. But I'd have to start at the front and work my way back. With dump barrels at the ready.
I loved how positive you were through this whole experience, but I can't get over how someone can abandon their storage unit on purpose & still make money doing so! Ugh, I hope karma finds them because they did you wrong. 😤
With the hot wheels when I worked in retail there would be a group of men that would come in looking for Hot wheels that had manufacturing errors. They would say that those were worth more if there were no issues with the packaging.
Same! There were a couple guys that would come in and raid out hotwheels display every time new stuff was released. One guy was super destructive about it and just tore through the display and left everything a mess, the other guy was way more polite and meticulous and always hung everything back up. Store got sick of them wrecking the displays though and eventually just started dumping everything into the same hotwheels bin instead of setting them aside on their own display, so they had to dig through literally HUNDREDS of packages to find the new stuff. xD
That tends to be the case with toys and other things that can be collected. Collectors care about things like rarity and value rather than how well something works or how good it is to play with, and things with manufacturing errors end up being some of the rarest stuff of all. Something with even the smallest error can cost thousands of dollars more.
I remember talking to one of them and they would intentionally bend one of the corners once they were finished going through the new orders. Pretty serious business 😅
Also as a comic fan I'm literally screaming do not open/take them out of the plastic at the screen 😂🤦🏼♀️ seriously though, please dont take them out of the packaging
Hi Hope! I’m an Art Historian and just so you know the FRAMES on the art are worth a good chunk of change (big one probably 200$) So don’t discount them! (The art is trash though lol)
I used to work at a storage unit place in HS and occasionally we had to empty out units (we always waited until they were 2-3k aka a few YEARS behind payments, and offered their stuff back at discounted rates like 200 just for them to take it) but often times ppl just didnt want what theyd left in there. I joked once ab finding a body in a unit whose owner had been unreachable for years- I found two boxes of cremated remains. We contacted the funeral home and gave them to the family members we could get a hold of.
I was really hoping for a win. This locker, literally had a little bit of EVERYTHING.!!! Almost like. Hmmm lemme start collecting this now. Lol Thank you for another amazing video ❤
I lived in that area of Maryland and I'm surprised that you actually got back half your money. I am almost positive that before they even take pictures of unit people working there have removed the most valuable stuff. There is a lot of new construction in the area give it about 6 months and see what pops up again.
*TIP* to get a more accurate price for what something is selling for look at the sold listings on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari. For eBay you have to search the item and then go to filters at top right & click more to expand the list and then you can click sold listings. People can post items for whatever price they want but it doesn’t mean anything unless someone is buying it for that price. This has really come in handy!

I love how she pronounces it as Mary Land like it’s spelled. Meanwhile, the neighboring states just mush it into “Meryl-Lyn”. Also, that life jacket looks like the exact ones they wore in Titanic!! 🚢

Those empty apple product boxes makes me wonder if someone abandoned this storage unit with stuff that looked expensive on purpose to see how much it would end up selling for lol.
@@tovarishchfeixiao hmm actually now I wonder, because those boxes were on top, if the storage company didn't so much empty the boxes themselves as they may have thrown those empty boxes on top when taking the photos precisely for the purpose of driving up the price of the unit?

I used to love watching storage wars! This is so satisfying!
They have a new storage wars (called storage hunters)!!! They have a group that goes around the country on the show now - last episode I saw, they went to Hawaii!!! It was kind of strange bc the units were like old bunkers that private ppl rented out- kind of cool though (usually they are at normal storage places though)
@juliet well yea, its a show lol. Anyone who thinks reality shows aren't scripted are delusion 🤷🏻♀️
I had a bunch of Barbies, a tea set and some other stuff I gave my little one. It's been so amazing watching her play with my old toys .
ok
I’m happy to see they aren’t worth a ton, because I had one of the special edition Barbies and I waited a few years until I gave into the urge and finally took her out to play with, which was much more fun then her just sitting in a box.
I gave my granddaughter my Empress Bride Barbie. She loves it.
Girl!! I had that Christmas Barbie from 1996 - I was 12 that year, she was probably the last Holiday Barbie I ever got! What a blast from the past!!
"aren't you going to take out your new doll and brush her pretty hair???"
Blink.
Lol
I felt the same about the Wet & Wild one! I didn't have that exact one, but I had three others from that series (and one was shown in the video clip).
i had the blue dress one still do from my great grandma
I had almost all of these, I was five in '96 and my grandma and I bonded over barbies, so I would let her know which I liked best and she would surprise me with a few.
Appreciate how much works and money she spends on these amazing videos

Yeah, I would be careful about looking to what's listed on ebay or etsy for what things are actually worth. I've seen people trying to sell their base sets of Marvel trading cards from the 90s on those sites for thousands and thousands of dollars. Take it from me, someone who collects Marvel cards, they don't even come close to being worth that.
Items are worth what ppl are willing to pay.
Only look at the sold prices! 👌

@@carliebrown8267 Yeah I was wondering the same thing since she spends so much money for a lot of videos. Somehow she makes it work though 🤷♀️

Seconding this! I was going to comment this same thing
Yep!! Anyone can list anything for w/e they want.... but it doesn’t mean someone will buy it at that price
@Simply__KaitlinRogers I got the second one she tried the price for, the gold one, for 2 dollars at goodwill. In really good condition 🤷🏼♀️

Louis Vuitton's fabric never cuts off the "LV" logo on the fabric. So if you ever see a LV bag, look on the side of it to see if any of the LV's print is cut off by the stitching. That's one way you can tell it's fake.
You mean the monogram print doesn’t cut off?? That’s very false. Many authentic LV bags have that 😂😅
@@SH0124_ well a LV worker literally told me that so take it to someone else hunny lol
@Emiko Castillo. Although I do not help make LV bags my friend does, they explained to me that this is untrue, as well as I also looked at all my LV bags and they were cut off 😂 It might have been the other way round, but from what according to them saying I think there’s no way of telling.
This is not true
That's a commonly believed myth. It's simply untrue

The auction house must have known that the boxes were empty as they took the photos!
The gun cases being empty was such a scam considering how many there were because those would have been worth a lot of money
@@michelle1 Yeah, that seems like a pretty big unaccounted for loophole. I wonder if it's different by state.
the auction house, the storage place employees, and anyone that 'looked' at that unit would have taken things from it... seen it all too often when people are 'scammed' into thinking otherwise, and the storage unit place would surely have known all the boxes were empty, so it wouldnt surprise me if theyre running the scam or profiting from it in more ways than one.... its just basic human nature!!
The first LV bag is called the Ellipse, and it’s vintage, so there’s no way the leather detail would be that bright beige color anymore. Immediately knew it was fake.

I believe a general rule to follow when bidding online and relying solely on pictures / videos is that the Seller will "stage" certain items to get your attention. As with most auctions, opening bids are intentionally lower to attract more bidders and run the price up as they compete.

The only thing that brings it's worth down is the fact that the packaging is damaged from moving around a lot since I was 5-6 years old. I'm almost 21, so I've had it for a long time.

Sometimes packaging errors will increase the value as well, e.g. typos.
I remember talking to one of them and they would intentionally bend one of the corners once they were finished going through the new orders. Pretty serious business 😅
That’s super interesting 🤯 I had no idea
