Mass effect died because of the technical issues and the writing/characters. I love open worlds games and actually liked andromeda, and I can tell you the environments are one of the game's pros. Bioware did'nt execute how they went about the structure of activities/side quests within those worlds in the right way.

    • @TVAlien
      @TVAlien 5 лет назад +4

@@LandofBrickForests As another fan of Andromeda, I think most of the game is fine, combat especially. It's the mediocre writing that really tanks the feeling of the game. On top if that, the character Ryder is so much worse than Shepard was. You suddenly play an impotent protagonist, compared to the badass that is Shepard is. You can never pull off aggression and it always feels like your character is lacking. Other character's dialogue can get just downright lazy sometimes too.

Ide like too see atleast a bit more space on the maps.
The whole time i played Outer Worlds i always felt the edges and invisible walls of the maps. It always left a kind of constrained feeling in the back of my mind. Especially in Scylla where you can see the end of the map from everywhere.
An example: i tried to jump over some rocks to take a shortcut but there was invisible walls forcing you to take the linear path given to reach the destination.
Monarch was a decent size but it had so many linear paths and the map itself is designed so that you have to walk around the entire thing, you cant go through the middle.
I just couldnt help but feel like i was always being funnelled to destinations instead of going where i want on my own accord.
It's not to say i didnt enjoy the exploration, it just left me wanting more from it.
I understand that trading off a giant world for more content in more compact spaces has payed off really well, theres a lot of depth and possibility in the options and choices the game provides which they probably wouldnt have executed so well in a giant open world.
But imo, if they are going to make an outer worlds 2.. It needs to be bigger. Especially if it wants to surpass this games success.

I'd argue that the best part of Fallout New Vegas is the initial quest line, where you are essentially told to go in a particular direction until you reach Vegas. You went through particular towns on a wide arc until you finally reached the mythical city. Obviously it is open world and most players start to explore on wildly different paths after Novac, but there was still a direction and a "hub-world" feel going on. That direction and drive is compelling and much less intimidating for players to tackle.

I love Open World games, but hub areas allow more and better realized separate environments quite often.
Bethesda’s games for example are “mostly” more open world RPGs (most of the larger separate extra content areas being dlc). I love exploring them but there is a kind of limit to what you can do without either taking forever to make a game, or have other sacrifices (Just Cause and FC for example, with a lot of repeated activities in such a huge world).
Outer Worlds seems to suit the Hub mold well-it’s something devs like Obsidian, BioWare, etc use pretty heavily anyways. Dragon Age for example has some sizable hubs in Inquisition which allowed very diverse regions. Fable traditional did the same. Mass Effect Andromeda in particular followed that too, although OW already looks to have more Life to it than it did imo.
So I’m still happy for non “fully” open world games. I’m sure there will be enough room to still allow exploration in OW too, as they sort of grew from hub based exploration games anyways (much like BioWare and inXile-Classic crpg origins for all 3’s founders).

Open World can be done in a way that creates an explorable space, that is a pleasure to return to over time. Skyrim & RDR2 are excellent examples of this. If you want more development cycles and product releases, open world games are counter-intuitive to your business model. Smaller, consecutive releases lets you iterate on your story & mechanics over time & develop them. Borderlands 2 was an excellent example of this, using DLC to explore & extend their world building & design over time. Its interesting to think about. Good talk

Pack it solid with side content , better character customization , more armor and outfits to wear. Like Fallout 4 , where's some outfits you can put armor over them. But I think it'll be totally f****** Epic , to have every planet have its own loading screen but to be able to fly the ship around in the space area , to a planet like Ratchet & Clank 2.

I would prefer a hybrid of open world and tighter discreet locations. All the significant story stuff could be tied to discrete locations as in TOW, but you could provide a planet or two for overland exploration that is a wide open planet with a few biomes but no direct link to story; or make the story bits only affect part of the world. Like, I would love it if the Monarch ground zone was 50x the area it is, but with the story part of the map exactly like the map is now in game. But it's all good; TOW is an amazing game as-is.

I don’t mind if they don’t go full Open World and keep it as they did in the first as long as they expand and introduce more planets/solar systems to visit. Maybe even include a secret mission to Earth to find out what really happened.
I.think how they approached each location as being tinier semi-open worlds split up into different areas helped move along the narrative and getting around to do side quests didn’t feel like a chore, as long as they fix the ridiculous load times (I played on a base PS4, didn’t hinder my experience much if at all other than the sometimes too long load times) and keep the same RPG/dialogue systems it’ll be incredible, I fucking loved this game. I just want more than 2 planets 1 moon and a handful of space stations to visit.

I'm surprised by how polished this game feels. It was really fun and immersive. My 2 main critiques are that character movement felt kind of slow in combat and the hubs were a bit too small. I get they probably didn't have an enormous budget, and whats there is really polished and fun, but I can't help but want just a bit more. I'm very interested in a sequel, this was great.

it's not even out yet and we want DLC, an expansion, mods, TOW2... That being said, it being semi-open world like the KOTOR series were would be nice. Not railroaded, but still heavily structured and able to revisit old areas that aren't locked out.

Maybe a Procedural generated dungeon crawler dlc that you can do after game is finished with level cap so you have a certain type of character and play as much combat as you like with that character type and farm weapons and armor.

They don't need to make an open world, BUT I would prefer bigger areas. Maybe cut the world into 4 main exteriors. The Outer Worlds had a few areas that felt like they didn't need to be kept separated from the others. Roseway specifically felt too shallow for having it's own area. I think I would've preferred if they just combined Roseway with Emerald Vale. One thing The Outer Worlds is missing is simply exploring the world, something that would be helped by an open world or at the very least, bigger maps. I feel like the main story takes you everywhere and for some reason that leaves me with this feeling that there's no exploration. You're not going places just to look around, you're going there for a task. I like to have both, but maybe that's just me. I get why they'd cut it into smaller areas though, so I wouldn't mind either way.

I really enjoy large open-world games because the game feels like a journey across the land. But Outer Worlds is in space so it makes sense that you would travel from planet to planet but I don't want those planets to feel small. You're visiting an entire new world and if your visit is confined to a small city then you're visiting a city, not a planet.

Budget must be also a Factor.I've already playing the game an early copy arrived yesterday, im 10 hours in now.Its really good in terms of RPG,Immersion,Gunplay,Dialogue and Story. But takes too long to start the first 4 hours are like an talking simulator. Also the world is really empty and clean, most environments are often recycled and the loading times are way too long for a game with such average Graphics. It's sadly not an Masterpiece, but a really good game so far.

Large and smaller sized areas kinda like dragon age inquisition would be great and even some places like groundbreaker with more upper and lower levels to visit would be great so long as they make these areas worth exploring not just for loot but for special encounters and hidden quests and things like that could really add to the world. It would also be great if they made some of these places worth revisiting for instance if a quest that was done earlier and your choices changed what faction now holds the area or the area has become overrun with wild beasts because a gang of bandits was cleared out or something and new quests options open up. Also id be open to some kinda spaceship type missions or encounters in space or something if it was done right.

The open world debate is intresting here in that playing this game is a lot like playing a game based on the show fire fly and to be able to get into and take off and fly a ship that big around a sandbox solar system with integrated maps would be logically taking this franchise to the next level bc that was my only criticism when I first played outer worlds was I’d love to fly the ship

I like the several planet structure/half open way the world is. I do, however, wish the game was longer. Mass Effect 2 could be played for over 100 hours without having to restart and that's kinda what I think this game should be. I get that some would like to play again as a different character, but I rather keep accumulating levels and gear instead of a hard ending that forces you to start over and replay things slightly differntly.

Hubs are actually perfect for games like this. I would say those of us enjoying the game would rather see expanded hubs. So for the next game we would want to see more hubs (and maybe even some of the original hubs from the first) that are densely packed with awesome characters and architecture instead of an open world that lacks detail.

  • @markwhitaker574
    @markwhitaker574 5 лет назад

I prefer the hub world model. You just make the terrain open in some areas. Everyone compares this to New Vegas but that was open world. Outer Worlds feels a lot closer to Star Wars Kotor 1 and 2 as far as the overall structure. You have a ship and travel to different planets and moons and space stations. This is my favorite game model. Obsidian and CDPR are probably going to be the two best companies for games now

As much as I love open worlds (when done right), I'd much rather have hub RPGs or even like... single city (a large city) RPGs. Something that's insanely detailed and polished but not expansive (and shallow) is a win in my book.
Look at Yakuza. They're like ~7 games into the franchise at this point, and most games feature one recurring main location with a few small side locations sprinkled in (one or two per game). Granted, each game evolves the city, but the point is more that - although it's one city - it's one content-rich city full of stuff you're happy to waste time with. Look at AC:O, on the other hand. HUGE RPG. Probably the biggest we've gotten ever. But it's also so full of emptiness, copy/paste, and abysmal quests with stories you really don't care about. And that isn't on the devs. When you're so stretched, sacrifices like this are bound to happen.

Microsoft buying Obsidian and doing this Xbox Game Pass stuff has forced me to reconsider my opinion on their gaming division. Before the Xbone released they seemed to be the more constrictive, un-consumer-friendly company in gaming. Now with Phil Spencer they seem much more about pleasing their customers, and less about simply making money at any cost.

I mean they should go with their gut, I played outer worlds for around 8,5 hours now and I’ve done every quest I can possibly find just because I found it that good I’ve rarely had that magical feeling in a rpg since playing new Vegas, if the open world they’re making is like New Vegas and it’s full of quantity and quality I’m all done for a bigger outer worlds, this outer worlds is pretty big but not the biggest rpg they’ve done, however it’s just so damn good and refined in the rpg aspects especially, I’m sure they’re gonna make huge profit, I’m done for anything inter worlds wether it’s expansion or new games.

Open worlds can be fine, if said world is compact and has plenty of stuff to do and see in it. Rockstar has this formula nailed down, most other companies don't. In the case of a game like Outer Worlds, I would prefer that they focus on other aspects of the game (more variants of weapons and armor, more factions and faction-related quests, etc.) instead of trying to create an "open world game."

We've seen this movie so many times. Just a few years ago companies like Obsidian and Ninja Theory were exclaiming their joy at being independent and not beholden to a major publisher. Bungie popped champagne after getting away from Microsoft, who wanted them to do nothing but make Halo for the rest of eternity, and then immediately signed up with Activision. They popped champagne after that split too. After a game or two the corporation starts to get their fingers into things. I have all the faith in Obsidian, and I'm glad The Outer Worlds is getting that last push with Microsoft money, but I worry about the future. If Microsoft wants an open world sequel, I'm pretty sure they'll get it one way or another.

I’m fine with that tbh all I’d like from the next outer worlds is; Bigger, better & more of everything! I’d like the hubs to be bigger and the story to be just a couple hours longer. Ohh and aliens, definitely felt like this game didn’t need but could been that much cooler if it had a faction(s) of aliens. Like come on humans can’t be the only smart life forms out there. Other than that maybe spaceship battles and more customizable weapons and outfits ( looks/esthetics wise). I don’t think I’ve had every outfit in the game but they could be cooler looking.

If they can be less like Ubisoft and more like CDPR just imagine how awesome it would be. Just remember how well the shift to open world for Witcher 2 to Witcher 3 worked out ....if passion is there it is POSSIBLE
