  • Sometimes we may be a little too quick to throw away things that we think have seen their better years. In this video, we rebuild some old cast iron lawn furniture and get a great result. A little time and effort spent cutting and finishing new wood parts turned out to be a good use of time. I did this for a neighbor but now need to find something like this for my own yard!

    I had exact same bench on our front porch in Hobbs, but left it there when we moved.. as it was getting in need of repair. Great video well done with beautiful results, of course I mostly enjoyed seeing and hearing voices of two of my favorites 😘

      Greetings Mario from New Mexico in the US! Thanks for watching and I am glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, we could have gone with a rounded over edge but I think we both agreed that the bevel would look great. Definitely needed one or the other. Good to hear from you!

    Good to see you again Rusty! Crazy thing, I found one of those benches for free about 4 months ago and almost brought it home. It was in fair enough shape that it would have lasted a few more years before it would have needed to be rebuilt. I decided I had too many things I will probably not ever get finished already. I regretted it but now I got to watch you guys restore one so all is good!!! Hope you all have an awesome Christmas!

      Hey, Danny, how's it going! Yeah, I have to limit my neighbor on bringing me projects because I have too many of my own waiting on me right now. But this was a good one without that big of a time commitment and I am really happy with the results. We have passed on bird hunting this year primarily because reports are that the numbers are way down. Boz and I may go down and scout it out a little in January or February and not hunt just to get out and run around a little. That's two years in a row so hopefully next year will be one of those where they start to rebound. We'll see. Merry Christmas to you guys as well!

      @@RustyDobbs We were in Carlsbad a few days ago and son-in-law said that there weren't any quail this year. The numbers of birds always cycle every few years so maybe next year they will be up...

      @@dannywilsher4165 Yeah, we've been surprised at how quickly they can bounce back after a really down year.

      Yeah, Frank, it's pretty surprising what new slats and cleaning things up a bit will do to old cast iron benches. Kinda fun to do as well, isn't it!

    I just found this video
    I look around town for old ones to buy cheap
    I’ve restored several of these and I have a few more to do
    I like using oak wood stainless steel or brass fasteners
    After I’m done I find someone to give it to I could show you a few

    This was a great video and exactly what I needed....I haven't done anything like this before, but am very excited to try! I am having a hard time figuring out what wood to use - I live in NY where we have the unlucky climate of hot/humid summers and wet/rainy/freezing winters. I feel like my best bets are either oak or cedar for them to last the most. What would be a good weather-proofing product as the final top coat!?

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 месяца назад

      Good luck on your project! Yes, it sounds like your climate is just the right mix to be really destructive to exterior wood surfaces. As far as a finish recommendation, I have had good luck with spar urethane products for exterior uses but my climate conditions in NM are the opposite of yours. I would think maybe some marine products used on boats might be what is recommended by the paint suppliers in your area but I would definitely check with them. They will know for sure where I am just guessing. Yeah, keep taking on projects like this as you develop your skills! It is very rewarding to see the work you can do with your own hands. You get better the more you do this kind of thing, so don't be too hard on yourself if you struggle a bit!

    Nice and simple 👌. Just a quick question, what did you use to protect metal parts? Cheers

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  2 года назад +2

      Yes, Dragan, just trying to replace what was worn out and not much more. I was spraying a low cost black enamel paint, satin finish on the metal. We don't expect it to be long before it will begin to weather and fade which will be fine. That will add back some character again. The wood should be good to go for a number of years. That spar urethane is a good exterior finish product. Thanks for watching!

    I have come across an old cast iron bench that is pretty weathered. Should I sand blast it then use rust o Leum

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  28 дней назад

      If you have the equipment to sandblast with, it certainly wouldn’t hurt, Jeff. Mainly you want to get rid of loose debris on the iron. The paints these days are pretty good at covering everything else. Fun project!

    I have just a frame, no wood. The back rest is arched like this
    What is the width of the arched wood? 4"?
    Thanks

    • @RustyDobbs
      @RustyDobbs  Год назад

      I think we used about a 6” piece of material to cut the arch from because we happened to have it and preferred not to join pieces to get the needed width. I believe the width of our individual pieces overall were about 2 3/4” wide. Good luck, Christopher! It's a fun project!

      I guess by now you've finished your bench. I too purchased a cast iron frame with no wood. To make the curve, I bought a 1x8 pine board (10 foot) to make a template for the actual red cedar boards I will be using. Making those curved pieces was difficult and required a lot of modifications and sanding.
