I don’t know if anybody else has mentioned the Seiko Presage Sharped Edge GMT, it’s around the same price as the Mido, but much better proportions and giving strong Grand Seiko vibes for a fraction of the money.
I always find it strange the obsession with a ‘true’ gmt. For 95%+ of the population an ‘office’ gmt is genuinely better functionally. The only advantage of a true is if you are a hardcore traveller who moves through multiple time zones on a regular basis. The excuse that jumping hour hand is easier is weird too - it saves seconds in reality and what Watch nut doesn’t constantly fiddle with their watch all day anyhow 😂. Only thing I can think is the ‘true’ gmt movements are still only really seen in the luxury tier - and ppl simply want them for this reason - ironically Miyota will blow the misconception that they are somehow super complicated and expensive to make out of the water. In 10 years when true GMT’s are in every micro watch you’ll see ppl stop the whole ‘true’ is sooo much better and more sophisticated than the crappy ‘office’ - and again ironically ppl will probably start buying office GMT’s as they simply are more practical. Funny old world.
@@HarrisonElmore but that’s my point - is it ‘cool’ because it’s only currently seen in higher end luxury stuff. Once it’s in everything it will cease to be cool imho (like most complications (and materials) that eventually end up common at the affordable end i.e. auto chronographs; high beat; Ceramic; sapphire; titanium; hell even on the fly adjustment was ‘cool’ until it ended up on the cheaper stuff). If something is only ‘cool’ because it says ‘expensive’ and ‘luxury’ then for me it’s automatically not cool.
as an airline pilot, ive been waiting for an affordable true gmt for a long time. changing time zones, especially going east to west makes all other versions of "GMT" watches useless. Im excited to try on the new longings Zulu, as they are the first to challenge the Rolex gmts.
@@kickkid29 see my original comment. I said 95% of people - and that true GMT’s are really o my useful for those regularly crossing time zones (such as pilots!). For the rest of us an office GMT is significantly more functional.
I agree with you 100%, Harrison. I want an affordable true GMT, preferably 39mm, for world travel. I am excited about this new Miyota movement - I have 3 Smiths watches with the 9039 movement and it is excellent. There should be some interesting true GMT microbrand offerings coming soon.
I don't get the over-complicated thinking on GMT watches. When I traveled with one, I set the the "normal" hands to my home time, and the GMT hand to GMT time, I then just adjusted the bezel whenever I switched to a new time zone. No need to pull the crown and fiddle. Just imo.
IIRC, this is actually how they are supposed to be used, and how the original Rolex GMT Masters from the 1950s (not the II) were intended to function. It's also why it's called a GMT complication. You set the GMT hand to well... GMT!
The same people that insist that a ‘true’ gmt is better for travelling invariably use their gmt hand for anything but gmt. It’s not the function; it’s the look. My fidget spinner is better than yours, because it cost more..
@@Simplicimus1945 nah, it would work well. My problem with using the bezel is that I gotta adjust the way I look at the watch as I pose to just having the time set
Check out the Alpina Startimer. You could find them around 800. You get a GMT disk and a jumping hour hand, but it only moves forward, which is a plus because turning the crown counter clockwise is for the quick set date - best of both worlds.
you should check out the Citizen promaster land gmt. Has the "jumping hour hand" function, they're very affordable, and look great. Only downsides are the case size (42mm) and they have mineral crystal. But, I'm with you; I'm excited to see more affordable GMT options!
That’s why I bought my brother the Tudor GMT so he didn’t have to travel all the time with his Rolex Pepsi. He’s a commercial airline pilot and has to occasionally fly into O’Hare. He laughs that he always takes his watch off when he’s in Chicago.
@@kickkid29 I think you missed the punchline. Of course there are actually dangerous places other than Chicago. he rarely ever even leaves the airport it’s a joke that he says because of their crime rate.
@WristSwap - You probably already know this, but the new Q Timex GMT is a beater GMT, at just around $200. It's not a "true" GMT, but maybe you're interested! Boldr also makes the Ventura GMT, which is a quartz but with it's titanium case, 200m WR and sapphire crystal, is a lot of watch for $300. Again, I know you're looking for a "true" GMT, but you will hardly find one at the price point I think you're looking for (if I understood correctly). Cheers!
Also the Seiko Presage GMT with true GMT 6R64 is beautiful and can be picked up for around 1,000 used. It is a real beauty and mine is running +1 sec/day. Maybe I’ve just been lucky though…
The best affordable true GMT has to be the Marloe (Day or Night) one of the only watches I can find that’s, mechanical (Miyota 9075 true traveller GMT). 24 hour turning bezel, all for £699 however sign up and you get 10% off. Also waterproof to 50 Mts.
Seiko kinetic will get you there too if you're open to kinetic. Specifically the landmaster kinetic. Travel gmt usually sub $1000 and a great history to boot!
True gmt for me all the way. Aka, "I live in a part of the world that still messes with daylight savings"-gmt. There are also some citizens that use a true gmt eco-drive movement, but very few that aren't as crazy busy-looking as most citizen watches are
Solid point. Still a bit big for me at 42 for that style watch, but great note. Those Swatch ETA based movements are always hard to tell without reading the manual if they're caller GMT's or True GMT's. The POWERMATIC 80.661 is a True GMT
I’m in the same predicament lol I wanted a cheaper GMT and the Seiko seemed perfect, thing is I actually really want a sapphire glass too and the cost of Seiko 5 GMT and cost of modding would be about 1/3 of the cost of a used Tudor GMT. So I’ve decided to save up to buy a used Tudor GMT
Not going to lie I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the new Seiko MM200 GMTs were still office GMTs. I’m a huge Seiko fan and desperately want them to produce a travelers GMT in the Prospex line.
Miyota movements are really excellent in terms of quality and performance. I have a few. The only reason I'm not going to get anymore watches with Miyotas in them is one thing that turned out to just really bother me in daily wear. They're darn unidirectional rotor! That wobble and constant fast spinning is just annoying! Come on Miyota, make it a nice, unnoticeable, quite, non-wobbling bi-directionnel rotor like all the Swiss brands use. Otherwise, no complaints whatsoever.
Fair point. The uni-directional rotor seems pretty common all too much. Same thing is true on my Wife's vintage Cartier. Just hasn't become industry standard yet!
I have a Zelos with the Miyota 9075. Great movement, terrible watch. (Had no idea Zelos watches are basically a giant hunk of metal housing a mechanical movement) I think something like a Nezumi Aviera would be a better choice I think.
Could we speak with you about you reviewing our needs FURY GMT, by core timepieces coming out in October? In the $500-$1000 range, titanium, 300m depth, with a Barton additional strap. You can see pictures of it on our Instagram page.

Soon indeed 👀
I use a Casio World Time watch. It’s cheap and has a cool retro vibe. Also you can track many time zones.
Just recently purchased the SSK003 and I’m loving this new watch .
Hey Harrison, any updates on this idea? I’m looking for a true GMT sub 1k but haven’t found anything great to me. Drawn to the Mido Ocean Star.

I have a Citizen that can change the hour hand for any time zone. It’s got every time zone in it.
Totally agree with you on this but I don’t understand calling a $500-$1000 watch a “beater”. Thats still alot of money to treat something poorly.
A GShock is a true beater. It’s just a term to mean that I don’t have to be as careful!

That's not a lot of money for a beater. Good watches cost 10X more.

A Ball GMT is the one to get. It smokes both Seiko and Tudor in every single category.

Yes! I’ll be discussing soon!

Glad to hear it! Looks like more options are coming

Be nice if the Mido's weren't huge (44mm).
