  • The Harvard dropout who became a billionaire in his 30s, Bill Gates revolutionized the computer industry and, later, the world of philanthropy. Now he has been looking back at his childhood, with the first of a three-part autobiography fittingly titled "Source Code." He discusses his rebelliousness and competitiveness with correspondent Lee Cowan, and talks about how, growing up, he viewed nearly everything through the prism of mathematics.

    The fact that children with autism, specifically Asperger's Syndrome, were not formally diagnosed until the early 1990s meant that individuals like Bill Gates were unaware of why their brains functioned the way they did.
    Asperger Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental condition on the autism spectrum, characterized by challenges in social communication and restrictive, intense interests. Unlike other forms of autism, individuals with Asperger's typically have normal to high intelligence and no significant delays in language development. However, they may struggle with understanding social cues, forming relationships, and engaging in typical social interactions. People with Asperger's often excel in specialized fields, showing a remarkable ability to focus on specific topics or tasks. Though Asperger's is now considered part of the broader Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis, it remains an important framework for understanding neurodiverse individuals.

      @@haywoodjablomi9249 My son has Asperger's Syndrome. He was diagnosed in the early 1990's by a supportive (and very brainy) psychiatrist. It was a relief for him because he didn't feel so bad about himself when misinterpreting social cues and episodes of sensory overload from school misunderstandings/situations. This was greatly alleviated when he was transferred to a small private school for gifted children (many of whom were undiagnosed Aspies). Having a diagnosis can be freeing, even for children. He has told me how much he appreciates how we were "in his corner" helping him understand what was going on and the efforts made to improve his situation. He is a fully independent and pretty happy young man who went away to college, has friends, and has a good job. Fortunately, we had resources, and I understand how difficult it would be without the support that we had as we did have some scary years for sure.

    Bill Gates treated co-founder Paul Allen terribly and betrayed him. Paul Allen played a crucial role in securing the initial deal with IBM for MS-DOS, which became the dominant operating system and gave the initial funding to start. But when Allen was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in the early 1980s, Gates allegedly took advantage of his illness to renegotiate their partnership agreement, reducing Allen's share of the company. Disgusted Paul Allen left Microsoft in 1983. In his memoir, Idea Man, Paul Allen detailed his grievances, accusing Gates of trying to force him out of the company, diluting his stake, and pushing deals "as hard and as far as he could."

    • @ARIZJOE
      @ARIZJOE 5 дней назад +3

      That's mostly true. But Bill inherited his fathers' lawyer-as-negotiator skills - and his dad also advised and secured much bigger capital. I don't know if Allen would have made out as well without them. Allen made out pretty well with the Seahawks, Trailblazers, $500 million worth of art, and the then world's biggest yacht. Allen had a lucrative VC company, Vulcan.

      You forget to mention that Paul Allen still was a big shareholder, so he became a rich person while he was recovering from his illness. Gates an Allen repaired his relationship and the two men donated $2.2 million to their childhood school Lakeside in 1986. In 1990 he joined Microsoft again and during this second period he founded Vulcan Capital and became a huge billionarie. He voluntary left Microsoft in 2000 to focus in his own businesses, but he remained as a senior strategy advisor.

    In many interviews, including this one, Gates alludes to how lucky he was to have succeeded with Microsoft. Likewise, Steve Jobs expressed the same feelings about Apple's rise and success. One could say that the respective successes of both Gates and Jobs, through genius and luck, are due to the fact that they managed to put together all the various 2+2's when no one else did. If indeed one or more persons had arrived on the scene at the same time, or perhaps before Gates and Jobs first gained attention, and had managed to put all the 2+2's together in an even better fashion, then we'd now be talking about them rather than about Gates and Jobs. That's really it -- it was Bill and Steve who were able to seize the moment along with the pots of gold.

    He wasn't just meeting with epstein, his money enabled him and he was a willing participant. He's also the largest private owner of farmland in the US and wanted in several third world countries for crimes against humanity.

    His wife is pretty attractive,. I’m surprised he even lasted that long with her. Who did he cheat with him? It’s not like he’s a babe magnet. Wasn’t he married to his wife for like 30 years so who was his ex-girlfriend someone that stuck around for that long? Or was this affair going on that long and finally got caught?

    Lots of luck, especially IBM new inventions that they did not use time and money to patent, that Microsoft then used to design DOS 3.1 then Windows 95 that did so well against the Apple computers.

      Yep. Welcome to the age of the algorithm. Populism, upvotes, little heart icons, money, advertising, eyeballs. We are being crushed by our own inventions.
      Sitting around a campfire and sharing stories, looking at the person who's a little too quiet and wondering how to help them come out of their shell, we don't do that so much anymore.

    Dear Microsoft,
    Please develop a superior, open-source video platform that outshines RUclips-one free from scammers and the endless barrage of scam ads. A secure, user-friendly space for creators and viewers alike would be a game-changer.
    Sincerely,

      Bill Gates showed genius intelligence in high school. And was diligently programming when we did not know what that was. KYI: his father was one of the most prominent attorneys in the Pacific Northwest, and represented companies like Starbucks. Ignorant, jealous, MAGA, for you.
