  • Finished the Revell 1968 Hemi Dart kit. This is a great kit and I did what I could to make it even better. Not super detailed but just a few touches and very little aftermarket parts. I really enjoy this kit and this is my 4th one. I did this one like it was delivered at the Hurst facility to the racer. They had to pick them up!

    In 1968 my brother and his partner were racing their 64 Plymouth Max Wedge out of Burbank. It was an early 64 with Wedge heads they had bought from Blair's Speed Shop in Pasadena. It was still NHRA Super Stock legal. Still had the muffler hanging underneath disconnected. Tan body. Red interior. Black valve covers. Sedan body with window posts. Watched them race it at Irwindale Raceway. Then later in the year they had spent the week rebuilding the whole front suspension as wheelies can be hard on such things. All Mopar parts. They took it to Lions. Ran brackets. Last run of the night for the win. Running in the right lane against a 68 Camaro 427. In the lights, the brand new left outer tie rod end popped off the stud and instant hard left. Spun around backed into the left guard rail. He had been well ahead of the Camaro. But as he bounced off the guard rail, the Camaro centerpunched his Mopar in the right door. They both tumbled down the shutdown with both cars completely totalled. Both walked away. Roll bars and 4-point belts worked. My brother was DQ'd for crossing the center line. But he picked up his time slip. 11.27 at 127mph. Crashing.

    Back when Testor paint was 10 cents a bottle, there was a hobby shop in my hometown, where hanging on the display racks were engine kits of all kinds, wheels, tires, and anything else the custom model builder would want or need, to build a truly unique model. 1/24 models were 2 dollars..... Ahhh so long ago.

    You have found one of my favorite subjects in the Dodge Dart, particularly the '68 Dart. This was a very enjoyable series of videos for me as I am currently building this version of the Hemi SS Darts. I liked that you even caught the bit about the 2-speed wiper motor. I will be using the wiper motors from the Revell Chargers as they all come with 2-speed wiper motors. My one and only caveat with this whole build is that none of the Hemi Darts were delivered with a roll bar. Most of my pictures of them as raced also show that they didn't have roll bars installed until they became Pro Stocks and the roll bar was then required.

      @@TheMuscleCarModeler I have to stand by my statement. Do searches on "1966 Hemi" and "1967 Hemi" on YT and My Car Story. Virtually every Street Hemi shown has black covers, with one guy having chrome saying that was a factory option, but I think most likely an OTC piece. The occasional Race Hemis that are verified mostly have chrome, but as you say many were changed or painted by racers. I grew up in a hotbed of this action (the SFV) back then, and that is what I recall also.

    After eliminating the fan shroud, removing the brake booster, blocking the heater hose inlet, shaving off the radio and air conditioner controls, removing window cranks and drilling holes in the door panels, removing the rear arm rests and drilling the bolt holes, I felt silly having done all that only to realize that the hemi is molded to a manual transmission when the cars had automatics. Shaving and sanding off the radio when the car has the wrong transmission. Shame on me.
    Still one of my favorite builds. Built the L028 and stock version and they look great together. But as another modeler stated, rather than calling this kit a Hemi Dart, it should be called Dodge GTS with hemi option. Due to the drivetrain inaccuracies, I abandoned the primer and fiberglass paint scheme.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler

    Beautiful models very accurate! Just one thing, in the primered dart, the engine compartment is grey primer not black. When the racers picked up these cars and got them painted before racing, when you go to the pits to see these cars with their hoods off you can see some racers neglected to paint their engine compartments revealing the primer in that area

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler

      I understood that Hurst modified (Hammered) the pass shock tower and some parts of the firewall. They also did some mods to the chassis. I read that they sprayed the engine comp and chassis all black when done.

      I think it is best to wait a few days to gas out. I let mine dry for at least a week. Then I add the decals if it has them. Then another wash and clear coat. Sometimes they wait longer as I usually clear more than one at a time.

    Excellent work, and I have a question. As Mopes typically have body-color engine bays, were these cars black going down the assembly line? Or, do you think Hurst painted the bays black to match the fiberglass fenders? Was it bare steel under the primer? I'm thinking two coats of paint would add dead weight.
    I have also pondered the original color of leaf springs. Most modelers seem to go with bright silver, but I'm thinking they were a very dull natural steel color. Same with gas tanks. What have you learned?

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 года назад +1

      This is hard to document issue with the Hemi Darts and Barracudas. I'm no expert either. I understand that they were in primer grey to hurst but after they hammered the pass inner fender and did some mods to firewall. Suspension and chassis was modified as well and when Hurst was done they just painted that all black covering everything but not the best spray job.
      Factory cars on the assembly line, the engine compartments were painted body color and the chassis got overspray on them. So some of the chassis was body color as well. Gas tanks and suspension were installed after and had no overspray on them. So they were black or natural steel color.

    Great work on the build. But you know I can't go quietly, so I have to ask.
    What was the deciding factor in why you chose the Vette wheels over the T-Bolt wheels? The reason I ask is because you go to great lengths being correct yet decided not to with the wheels.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! Availability mainly. This was supposed to be a quick build and originally I was going to leave the chrome wheels on it. Then decided I would see what I had that would work for black steel wheels. The Corvette wheels fit the best and look fine to me. Most modelers would not know the subtle differences. I have mastered better wheels for the Mopars that fit the bigger Revell tires. Look at my yellow 69 Super Bee. It has a great set that I mastered. But the mold is long gone and I didn't want to take the time to make another mold. Using the Corvette wheels, Modelers can duplicate my build easily. If I used my one off resin wheels I would get many emails asking me to make and sell more. I used to do some selling of resin but got tired of it and would rather build.
