Amazon is often criticized by the media for bad working conditions, abusing tax loopholes, and low pay. But, something you may not know is that Amazon itself is not even that profitable in the first place. This is nothing new. In fact, Amazon’s retail business has struggled to achieve profitability for its entire lifetime. It turns out that delivering virtually anything to anyone in the world at a record pace is extremely expensive. After over two decades, Amazon was finally able to achieve profitability in 2017 and 2018, but as of the last quarter, Amazon’s retail business has slipped back into burning money. Fortunately, Amazon has a cash cow that’s able to make up for these losses called AWS which is a cloud infrastructure service. But, this raises red flags around whether Amazon’s retail business can ever be a sustainable endeavor in itself. Amazon stock has always been priced as a growth company that would eventually become super profitable. But, it seems that Amazon will never really grow much past being a low-margin business like most other retailers. This video explains the financial state of Amazon and why Amazon is losing money again.

AWS is what keeps the company profitable most of the time. Every other division loses money, though retail is still something they rely on because the 2-3 week turnaround time between processing customer payments and payout for third party vendors essentially means they're getting interest-free loans
I would 2nd that with shipping and fulfillment. People have no idea that their 14 dollar a month for prime comes no where near the price shipping actually costs them
Amazon was the first company to take a retail business and turn it into a convenience store. In order to do that Amazon has to spend billions organizing and maintaining a distribution Netwerk even when people are buying. Shipping is a convenience that people are paying for when they have the money, also Amazon is not the cheapest place to shop in some cases they are more expensive.
I disagree as Sears was doing the retail business as a convenience store a _century_ ago via their catalog. If Sears hadn't been mismanaged into the ground it would be where Amazon is now.
That is 100% correct regarding Amazon, especially when it's a reseller/partner. You really have to shop around to ensure you're not getting gouged as brick and mortar can be much cheaper.
@@TimothyCHenderson For the most part I have found Amazon cheaper than a brick and mortar stop thought as you mention there are exceptions.
I’m an online reseller and I only sell on Amazon because I can get 20%-100% more for some of the items compared to eBay. Especially with FBA. That $9.99 overnight shipping definitely helps. Lol
10 minutes on how Amazon managed to grow without being profitable and not a mention of cash flow. Amazon gets paid by your credit card company quickly (within a week) but they pay third party sellers 2-3 weeks after delivery. Amazon gets to be a bank that doesn’t have to pay interest and so far they’ve been giving themselves the free loans. Other companies either have to pay their supplier a week before they get the inventory or they pay the supplier same day as checkout. Amazon flipped the model.
I like this channel for posing interesting questions, and attempting to answer them. That provides enough for me to keep watching. Too often the answers fall a little short or miss very important nuance while being stated authoritatively and that could be improved.
This was an interesting nuance. Thx.
Ah yeah, that is something noteworthy. Didn’t even think of that
A well written, constructive comment adding to the discussion. Are we still you RUclips here ?
Very valid point nonetheless, and not something often mentioned, especially now that AWS is so big.
@@ArthurMurdoc yea, and what is always forgotten is that Amazon got so big is because their customers didn’t have to pay VAT while Walmart did.
I found it convenient for awhile I was shopping a lot on Amazon and a prime membership for years, idk their businesses practices made me feel bad so I canceled my membership and I often find cheaper deals just searching a bit more...
Same.
I pretty much paid prime last time because i forgot to delete my details, 9 times out of 10 i find the think im looking for, from other retailer, at much more cheaper. Amazon's selling point is prime shipping, period.
walmart is cheaper and also has free delivery
@@arangelrb we don't have Walmart here and most of services have delivery either way or by another
On top of that, the poor vendors have to pay a 20 to 40% fee to be listed...
Amazon hasn't been profiting because those funds were reinvested into the company, creating more "value" and more revenue year over year, as you finally mentioned. Now that there are few opportunities for growth, it is time to downsize in certain areas of the company, but it shouldnt be alarming on its face to an investor that the company doesnt "profit" because that just means funds are taken out of the company instead of going back in.
Thank you sir......... you have corrected a very poor and mis-leading video.
wtf nonsense you are talking about here? the report itself is simple, amazon operational is more costly than the revenue that they gain. what is these fund reinvestment nonsense you are talking about?
On paper, Amazon is not profitable for tax purposes only. Why show profits and pay taxes? Amazon has genius accountants.
@@Darkrezta Amazon has ALWAYS chosen to plow money into growing, even when it meant operating at a loss. They could immediately become profitable by just trimming the fat and cutting back on growing (like their Netflix-wannabe Prime Video -- who really gets Prime for that?).
The writing is on the wall for sellers like me who run multiple businesses on Amazon- DIVERSIFY off Amazon as much as possible. They call it 'death by 1,000 cuts" where Amazon keeps increasing every fee imaginable, little by little.
Good luck!
Where do you diversify to? Isn’t the only choice Amazon?
@@TheBooban No, I've diversified many items to Bestbuy, Walmart, Etsy, & more. Even starting your own market place if you get big enough to start your own warehouse.
@@TheBooban WOW! You can't be that oblivious
True. I stopped selling on it after 2 years. The prices keep increasing ridiculously and after selling something I would be lucky if I didn't take a loss on the product by the end.
Amazon is profitable but pretty much all their profit comes from their Amazon web services rather than their retail business
That's why AWS's head person became Bezos's successor instead of the retail division's head person.
I'm an Aws solutions architect... AWS is the ONLY profitable part of Amazon... So much so share holders want them to make it a seperate company
What if the retail business buys overpriced services from AWS? Making these financial statements misleading.
Is there any public information available about that?
@@prolarka AWS is an excellent service which is a top industry competitor. No need for these conspiracies
@@prolarka got a friend that worked in AWS for a long time and that's absolutely not the case. A huge part of the internet runs on their servers, simply put. No need for tricks.
I would trust and buy more from Amazon if they weren't basically a front from AliExpress low quality Chinese gadgets or even counterfeits. As a Chinese I don't want to pay a bunch more to buy the same junk on Amazon that I can get for A LOT less from China. So in the end I am only buying household supplies, like paper towels, when I ran out but too lazy to go to the grocery store. I used to buy Samsung TV and stuff on Amazon, but not anymore due to the counterfeits, and I can buy directly to Samsung now. Yeah, Amazon that's why you are losing money.
This is the same reason Netflix is losing subscribers - everyone else has caught up with their unique offerings, and this company's generic service was only valuable by being first.
they are slowly getting rid of the Chinese products but if you ever bought anything from Aliexpress man their stuff is dirt trash, my friend gave it a try and bought front brake pads for his Honda they shipped him plastic brake pads lol
@@MS-ql8ek Oh wow - sounds like the grinding wheels I bought from Harbor Freight - so far off balance that they were dangerous to use.
@@StephenGillie I didn't even install them, tried to return it and couldn't get in touch with anyone
@@MS-ql8ek yeah I shop on AliExpress all the time since I'm Chinese. Most of the Amazon sellers are Chinese, they too get their stuff from AliExpress. I don't know if most people know that.
Amazon's web services are the main reason for crushing its competitors in retail. Without AWS profits, it would be impossible for them to survive for this many years with no to significantly fewer profits from e-commerce and acquire companies like Whole foods, Zappos, Twitch, etc.
They actually survived for years before AWS using this same model. Investors kept pouring money in because they kept growing.
@@ezyfnef so if they stopped growing they go kaput?
What's missing here is that AWS is also massively subsidized. Amazon as a whole is a private middle man that cannot operate in a free market by investment or merit alone. Such entities should be converted over to infrastructure and only serve as pass through entities for those that use it.

I love amazon as a service, but as an investor I would hold it for the moment , adding in portfolio is not a good choice unless retail business shows consistent profitability
Amazon's potential net margin may be low, but their potential scale is huge compared to other retailers.
And Amazon does not seem to have a direct ecom competitor, who can match their services in scale and quality.

I just saw an ad on my Facebook for Amazon "Aware" and had a good laugh. It's supposed to be a platform for conscious products. It's the most tone deaf thing I've witnessed lately because they are targeting a demographic that despises everything it stands for.
Some people are fine with delivery not on the same day let us say within a week. As long as the price are cheaper,
Thats me. Wtf do you need same day delivery for? You survived without it yesterday but you’ll die if you have to wait a week more? I just order from AliExpress. Takes months. I don’t care.
@@TheBooban People want immediate gratification, but they're so stupid about it. Everyone is losing money. Look around you. Receding tide.
They steal from their sellers. And sellers have hardly any better place to go. True abuse of monopoly power.
They are opening about 300 warehouses a year. When they stop doing that they will save a ton of money on infrastructure that will save billions.
Such great analysis on all your videos. Thank you!
They maybe doing this on purpose to make the stock value go down and buy up all the stock for cheap
No, they are literally selling billions.
It’s tax evasion. Companies “lose” money by reinvesting on themselves or stock buybacks.
@@angelgjr1999 Stock buybacks were illegal until Trump came into office. We need to push them to make it illegal again.
@@yeahgirl11 Ahhh. Yeah the trump administration was extremely corrupt.
In all honesty they deserve it by not checking products sold on there service, Alongside Amazon Prime Video becoming more dear with less content because they moved stuff to Freevie so they can shove adverts onto you.
Their search is awful too
But hey, if they're getting in the advertisement game why don't they throw their hat in the RUclips game at this point so we can finally get some competition in the market for this devolving platform. They already own Twitch. Wouldn't be hard to add a few video uploading features along with a monetization strategy which they already have a team for. That's a brilliant way to generate profit bt steal any bit of marketshare from Google's monopoly.
Canceled my Prime Membership. With so many distribution center, I can still get most items in a few days. Their Prime Videos aren't worth my time. Too many fake items on Amazon nowadays, no quality control.

Are you suggesting that MS' incompetence and lack of vision allowed Amazon's AWS to exist and prosper greatly?
Azure has grown tremendously in last 5 years compared to other big players aws and gcp. Their revenue is also similar to aws. Azure is more user friendly than aws because of their naming conventions, free certifications and integration between services.

There is a simple explanation. No profit, no taxables. Saving billions by reinvesting.
Excuse me? HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE OF MOTOR FUELS LATELY? Amazon is primarily a delivery company, the largest delivery company in the world. When gas hit 5 dollars the first thought in my head was what this had to be doing to Amazon. Their trucks now cost 1,000 dollars just to fill them up. It's a miracle their losses are as small as they are.
Cloud services are big. Microsoft's current CEO hails from their Azure business and Amazon's new CEO likewise comes from AWS.
Amazon is my last resort for shopping. Almost never does Amazon have the best prices and Prime is an overpriced joke. Customer service is atrocious. To make things worse, Amazon has loaded up with thousands of bizarre no-name Chinese knockoff brands. This transition from a once great online retailer to their current dismal business has happened over the past few years. I’d like to see Amazon return to greatness but I’m not holding my breath.
To hear Bezos tell it, AWS didn't have competition in the cloud computing space for 7 years. This is because AWS's competition back then was VMWare. Physical data center racks only charge for space, so they can hold huge amounts of compute for low cost per CPU, above a certain number of CPUs. And a dual-CPU high-core 2U Dell server cost about as much as 1 month of a high-core EC2 server back in 2014, probably the same now. A 3-server VMWare license cost 1/10 as much. It was almost magical to take one massive webserver out of rotation, install VMWare on it, and be able to run half a dozen smaller webservers and really optimize the site.
They are and know how to stay stable within their finances. So they know and have hit this rodeo before.
Keep up the good work
Thank you Murfy!

@@valanoirgaming7790 bruh haha funny munky. 😐 you expect me to be like: top 10 reasons Amazon is amazing!!.
what position are you?
Very bullish on AMZN. AWS is going to be even more of a cash cow, they have way more lock-ins than people realize and the use cases are only going to go up, retail business is just there for now. They lost money primarily due to building up retail infrastructure, that is not an ongoing expense moving forward, they can turn on profit mode whenever they want and would be near the market average if they were trying and not reinvesting into the business. P/E is very misleading for amazon. Eventually in 5+ years I think retail will have the best margins in the industry as they automate nearly everything and will be very profitable itself. Third party sellers is very profitable and now they are growing advertising very fast too.
Yeah, Amazon stock does look pretty appealing especially with the recent sell off
Im from a third world country where amazon has an HQ and they are disgusting.
They pay above the basic wage( which is not a lot in South Africa) but the responsibilities and stress from the job is not worth the money and then you are in this trap of sacrificing your mental health and not wanting to give the job up because it pays more than the other companies. They will just replace you with someone else at some point and say 'you are not a fit for the company' if you dont wanna partake in their rat race
And for all the Americans reading this, If you are living in South Africa and are making $500 or more per month, you are doing better than 65% of the South African Population... yes 500 usd... thats how Amazon traps us...
How do you pay taxes on losses?
I hate Amazon. It's market tactics break many local industries that can not eat up losses as Amazon can, and the small places lose their customers because Amazons prices are cheaper.
There is a lot of companies that don't make money they rely on the fed , as public service, investors, insurance employee IRS, employee packages as customers insurance 401k etc ,
Just don’t think people can always spend money. People are saving more so less subscriptions and shipping. It’s just not the same times right now.
Being treated like a disposable robot has been the norm at any job, so is peeing in bottles when your a delivery driver. Just saying 🤷🏽♂️

I don't know about this.. I managed a few electronic stores for wiz and best buy. So we used to see the margins. From there CompUSA & Back to bestbuy as a consultant. Margins for electronics is way higher then what you suggest. Anywhere between 25% to 200% of the after actual cost. Actual cost is when shipping, transporting & storage are factored in. I'm actually a fan of Amazon, it's poured a ton of money and innovation into fulfillment and despite what people say, it treats its employees quite well (people hate large corporations in the same way they hate wealthy, successful people).
Ah fair
It depends on what part of Amazon really. On the software side, they push people to do well, which is fine, and treat and compensate them well, but on the warehouse side (which is the majority of their employees), they absolutely don't.
