  • A first experiment with RUclips Shorts! I like the idea of looking through old sketchbooks and talking about ideas that still resonate with me (sometimes for different reasons than when originally captured). Want to see more like this? Let me know in the comments.

I am not a huge Steven King fan, but his book on Writing was fantastic and practical. You might also like John Steinbeck's journal which he wrote while writing "Grapes of Wrath".

Creative work is an altered state in itself I believe. Love your way of sketching. Congrats on your sobriety brother

Mind altering substances don’t make you more creative, they make you less creative.
They do however make you less inhibited, less self critical, less judgemental of yourself.
This is what gives people the impression that drinking (or taking other substances) makes you more creative. Not because they have better ideas than when they are sober, but because they don’t throw those ideas away.

I write n draw at the same time !!! It works sooo much better,,, I used to try to adhere to the everyone understanding everything type writing, and I realized, writing is truly about expressions of ourselves made understandable in communicative n creative ways, thank you for your posts, it's openess of unveiled mindsets that reveal the truth

You took really really good notes. The fact that, your all caps notes can be read and reread when needed is key of taking notes while reading a book. It's very important to keep the letters clean, bold is what you did.
Mine looks almost same with text as bullet points and sketches except my very bad handwriting which at times written so compulsively that it becomes unreadable.
On the other hand, your notes invites the eye to go through them. Wish I had the patience like you.

I own the big SK book. Wish you had sketchbooks for all the best on-writing books (I would definitely buy a collection or individual tiny sketchbooks).

I sometimes envision a "Sketchnotes on ___" series that would be fun to publish. Not in the cards just yet because of other commitments, but maybe one day!

I get some wicked brilliant ideas when I’m high or drunk. But under the influence, I’d be all over the place and can’t get anything done.😂

This is very true. After doing lots of research and taking in data, I will begin to clean around the house or watch a movie while this information incubates in my subconscious. Then a breakthrough will happen and I know what to do next in my work. I also like to stimulate my mind with coffee, or have some drinks etc. I even have tv on as background sound. All so the vibe is set to produce amazing work.

Hello sir. What is 'write with the door closed, rewrite with the door opened' means? And also, can u share to us ur journey to reach sobriety? Because i struggled with it a lot and i need some motivation and advice from someone who went through it and can empathize with my situation. Thank you.😊

I took one day where I let my self start drinking and writing early and edit sober. i finished the first draft for 3 short storyes all around 8-12k words in that single day, so you could say alcahol and writing go togather, with some people. I do not recomend people to do that ofte though.

Stephen King said mind altering substances weren't needed for writing? The guy who traversed the entire 1980s in one single, unbroken snort? Guess he left out "...but they sure are FUN."
Also, what's the title? I've looked over Amazon but haven't found anything remotely similar to this.

This book is simply called “On Writing”. And yes, the hypocrisy is on full display in this little excerpt. Take away the booger sugar and half of his best novels were never written.

Funny that he should say that because his writing suffered greatly after he stopped abusing substances.
