Deguchi Krista started judo at the age of three and reached a level where she could compete in tournaments in Japan, but she hit a slump around the age of 20. She was no longer selected to represent Japan, where there were many rivals. In 2017, she was invited to join the Canadian team, but she didn't want to be told that she changed her nationality to compete in the Olympics, so she consulted her elderly judo master. The judo master told her, "You're the one who's going to become a gold medalist, so nationality doesn't matter," and she became Canadian. However, the competition in Canadian judo was also tough, and she was not selected to represent Canada in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She could have retired, returned to Japanese nationality, and become a coach, but she chose to compete in the Paris Olympics as an active athlete and win a gold medal. Her long-time rival, Tokyo Olympic medalist Yoshida Tsukasa, retired in July.
