Since its inception in 1989, Warp Records has become one of England’s most influential and respected modern record labels.
In this lecture at the 2007 Red Bull Music Academy, Warp founder Steve Beckett recalled the early days and inspirations of the label, how it has remained independent despite changing times and how he came to find two of his biggest recent artists in the folds of the Academy.

    ---
Founded in Sheffield by Steve Beckett and the late Rob Mitchell, Warp tapped into the raw power of acid house and rave to fashion a distinctive visual and sonic aesthetic that attracted local, national and international talent and interest.
With the release of the Artificial Intelligence compilation and album series in 1992 Warp began its second phase, fashioning new understandings for dance music and bringing forth some its best-known artists including Aphex Twin, Autechre and the Black Dog. In 2000, the label moved to London and began its third phase, moving into films and expanding its roster to encompass such seemingly wide-ranging, yet related, artists as Prefuse 73, Broadcast and Clark.

I’m remember when I first heard Track with no Name. Was totally blown away by it. It was on a tape a driver who worked for my Dad had. I was working with him for the day. We went to a record shop towards the end of the day. I managed to buy a copy. Was so stoked. The other bloke bought Welcome by Gino Latino. That was also on the tape and he loved that track. I went home and just played the 12” over and over all evening. Fucking tune 👍

This is insane. I’m sure this wouldn’t happen in rock.
Musical geniuses Mark Pritchard & Hud Mo just casually sitting in the audience. Other big artists were mentioned like they might also be in the room. But Im too lazy to find that part again.
I mean you could even just fanboy over the idea that half of the 2 who did “76:14” in 1994 is right there (Mark P. in Global Communication) as just one tiny example.
    This blows my mind.
