Absolutely respect that from a newcomers perspective that it's a "new sport". Both ways of looking at it are accurate. New to someone personally doesn't necessarily mean new to a nation.
The same would be true of baseball in the UK. Seemingly new to people now, yet was very popular at the start of the 20th C attracting the same crowds that soccer did for a short while.
What's missing in both cases that's vital is the lack of recent generational affection for both sports, and most importantly widespread playing at school and college. This is changing for the better in the US I'm led to believe.
You've touched on a crucial point about generational affection and the importance of widespread participation, especially at the grassroots level in schools and colleges. That's truly where the love for a sport can blossom and endure through generations. And it's heartening to hear that the US has positive momentum towards fostering that culture.

FYI: it's not correct to call the the 1844 game between US and Canada a test. The short form (restricted-overs) formats were invented later, so all cricket at the time was long form (timed or not), but those recognized as tests started in 1877 (backdated when the term came into use somewhat later). The 1844 match was a 2 day game (extended to 3 because of rain). It gave rise to a on-again-off-again series of matches between the US and Canada that continues until the present -- the oldest international sports trophy: the K. A. Auty Cup.
