The reality of the entire thing is, if you want to party, drink, hangout with fellow bikers and "let loose"... the rally is your place. Tons to do and see while up there in the Black Hills. If you don't want to hear drunk people yelling at 3am in the morning while trying to rest up for the ride the next day or hate waiting in line for just about everything (food, drinks, gasoline, etc) and you want to experience the beauty of the Black Hills and ALL the awesome roads South Dakota has to offer, you might want to wait until off-rally time to enjoy it. But either way you can't go wrong. If you've never been....the Black Hills is a MUST on every bike riders' bucket list.

Planning going to 85 too. My father in-law said best time are 0’s and 5”s at the end are the best years.

My brother and I were on Wildlife Loop and had the bison walk down the road in the opposite lane. They are amazing animals, but like you said, we shut the bikes off and just watched them go by. Amazing experience.

George & Bert, Have you ever been to sturgis the week before? Most vendors are open days before the rally.
That's right and it's the best time to ride. I love that week before hand.
I will be this year!!! But have not in the past
First unfortunately I won’t be going this year but next year I will be going and I usually go the week before to do the rides it’s way less congested but y’all are right there’s no way to do everything in two weeks

I stay in an olds man’s camp ground. Trees everywhere for shade nice clean bathrooms and shower. Quiet time starts at 10pm.
But the most important thing is DA Bus stops there. They will take you all over from Downtown to Full throttle and Chip and gas station for beer runs. I think it’s 100.00 for the full rally. It was crazy riding Da Bus seeing my in-laws signatures from the 90”s written on the ceiling.
I think the most important item to pack is rain gear. It can be use for the cold nights and the fast rolling rain storms. If you don’t have a bagger roll it up and bungee it the bars like some do with ponchos. That’s what I did on my sportster my first time going.
I had the best time going with my in-laws. Next year my wife and I will be going alone. It will be strange going without my in-laws since my father-in-law passed. He always said he always wanted my wife and I to go alone eventually to have our own journey and experience their, like he has had with my mother in-law.

I’ve both ridden there, and trailered. Once you get there, how you arrived doesn’t matter. There was no welcoming committee for those who rode, giving them a round of applause. I say just get there, and don’t worry about impressing strangers.

Yes new riders should wait to get better before going to sturgis. You’ll take out more than just yourself.
Is there anything like Uber or Lyft during the rally? I am planning for the 85th already and considering staying in Spearfish, but I still want to experience the Sturgis nightlife (and don’t want to ride to/from at night).

You only need to put 1 foot down at stop signs
Legally yes, but you should try just putting just your left foot down with a cop off to the right watching the stop sign. Let me know how that works out for you. Better not to give them a reason.

When you going? Riding, trailering or flying?
If you can get your chick on the back of your hard tail and boogie something more than 500 miles to Sturgis then you’re a king. But at the end of the day that’s a tall order and she might want to have an RV or at the minimum be on the back of a $40,000 touring bike. Whatever gets you there.
I'm almost 50 and have ridden mine from NJ to Sturgis. At this point, I'd rather shove Bamboo under my fingernails than ride a hard tail to Sturgis.

@BaggersandBrews It's just a pet peeve of mine. U watch vids of Sturgis or Daytona from the 70's and u just don't see it. Makes u wonder what happened to us. America is soft.
