Hey Mel and Gary, I’m with you in your frustrations, by that I mean I have experienced that. My wife thinks I’m cranky with her when that happens but it is with myself. The big ask that we have of ourselves Is to give ourselves space and time to stop, walk away and do something that you don’t have to think too hard about. The problem you are trying to solve sometimes needs more brain time, kind of independent of you forcing it. As a man of prayer I throw it over to God and the answer just comes in it’s good time. I recall trying to work out a very complicated mechanism, got real frustrated as my models didn’t come up as workable solutions. A couple of days later I was driving and passed a truck with agricultural machinery. In that machinery was a mechanism similar to what I imagined but couldn’t build, till then. I pulled off the road and drafted a design and mulled it over some more, made a model and bingo solved. I am thankful that I can visualize pretty well and do most things I put my hand to, except my current challenge to learn aluminum tig welding,my coordination is kind of stuffed compared to when I was younger. I will get there at some point. When you first mentioned the intersecting roof I thought of the dimensional problems that valley gutters can present. My roof had no sheeting like zip board or ply under the ,metal sheeting. The valleys were made with strong lines as my guide first. The depth dimension was easy enough as I attached the roofing metal to timber battens which gave adequate depth to insert deep valley gutters. If you are using battens then that part of your build will be a bit less challenging as th gutters can slope from the top of the battens to the zip board and the centre follows a line from centre peak to outer edge, if that makes sense. Don’t be too worried about your humanity, as you are learning by jumping carefully off the high diving board, lots to learn but you are doing great.

Join the crowd right now. This last week has been horrible for me. Well, not horrible but nothing‘s going right from no kidney beans for the chili. I wanted to make to not getting my house clean. Then I was so sick today I couldn’t get my daughter and her family's presents mailed in time including the homemade things I wanted to make for her but her present arrived for me. My tree is not up and it’s so cold outside. I can’t bear to go to the garage to bring my tree in. Hopefully, tomorrow goes better.
The way I do things is take a piece of scrap and determine the angle I need for a template to confirm my math which is on paper. If both agree, I can proceed. I think the word Geometry is your hang-up! Once I stopped thinking that way and drew it on paper and then cut scraps for my angles and they fit, my frustrations left.
Do you have the booklet that comes with the speed square you use ? All the lines on the square represent the cut. It’s marked hip and valley on the inside and the most use common rafter once you get the calculations right there is a notch for each progressive rafter at 16” on center and 24 on center. If you’re going out of common construction practices by adding extra 2x those marks don’t mean anything and makes it harder to figure out.
Don’t be too hard on yourselves! You guys are awesome! Do you have any idea how many people look up to you guys? At least I do, I’m an old man now and I wish I could have done what you guys are doing. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

im the opposite lol.was lost in ALL math from algebra up but only clicked w geometry lol. plus couples need like 30 mins a day apart when u r living on the jobsite. even if its a lose it tyrade just give em some space for a few and dont take it personally. i been happily married for 12 years now. all the others failed badly cause we couldnt figure this out. im turning 50 this year and took like 35 yrs to learn that life lesson lmao

garry, this is 3d geometry.. its more difficult to calculate. my advise - use guidlines, make them parallel to lines u can measure so 3d will be 2d again

You've been a good wife mom and I'm sure friend, I think Gary thinks a lot and gets stressed out when things aren't perfect but nothing is perfect. Not even builders are perfect. Anthony and Rox say that a lot. Seems Gary second guesses himself a lot he's good at what he's done so far I wish he'd be crazier on himself as well. You kids are doing a great job.
