- In This epsiode of the Big Build we have been fitting the trusses, I have a new helper too called Ollie and now I have 3 giants helping me!!!
The roof construction here at the big build is a hybrid consisting of some factory manufactured elements and then traditional roof construction
Roof Carpentry is a passion for me I hope you enjoy watching the up coming episodes of roof carpentry

So nice to have three hulking apprentices/work mates. Well done boys!
Thank you for taking the time to film edit and upload while doing this work.
The cleanliness and calm organisation reminds me of how the Germans and Scandinavians build.
Great video, thanks !!!
I love it when great planning comes together 🔨 🛠 ⚒
Those guy's might be towering over you mate... But you're still a GIANT in the carpentry world!! 💯👌😆😂
Slime ball
Fascinating stuff Robin! A true pleasure to watch!
Looking forward to seeing the rest 👋🇮🇪☘️👍
Hello Robin,
Brilliant video.
God bless you.
Thank you for sharing your skills knowledge and experience.
Ahmed
Best wishes from Leicester ENGLAND
Top job. You've got a good team now, and good to see those wheels rolling along nicely.
Thanks 👍
Why were the other three wearing a pair of your trousers Robin? :)
Loved every minute of this series. Keep up the great work Robin! 👌👍🔨
something tells me that Robin is very pleased with his little trolley....No such solution for getting the trusses up to the first floor though eh?
That’s was a quick one.. looking forward to the next!
Nice to see those wheels actually in use.
They looked like they work really well with the bigger size wheels so I think I’ll make some for myself.
Interesting to see them getting butted together. I guess if they came already butted together, you would be trying to shift 300kg in one go. Even 4 giant men would struggle with that.
Much prefer your new intro sequence Robin... It's on the money!! 💰💯🤩
Interesting seeing a loft before the roof is put on.
Moving the trusses to the upper floor must have been a chore. In one spot I think you showed elevating one end and sliding it up. Seems like that would have taken more hands (and perhaps unsuitable language) - lifting and pulling. And yet you did it.
Had two employees once you had a height differential - you could always tell if they were not getting along - all the important stuff magically made it to the top shelf in the storage room and the step ladder was no where to be found.
Very nice
I wonder if a portable nail gun might be more practical than screws whilst standing those trusses?
Looking good!
Missed a golden opportunity to say “next slide please”
I'm sure Ed could have carried those trusses on his own! :)
I bet Robin double checked Ollies plumb!!! 😉
He's a pro!!
🤣 And that the truss was level!
film it all, + show us all of it ...............cheers
Three beefy lads taking a truss for a walk down a country lane! Just so English😂😂
Those guys are so tall they can't even get trousers to fit them
So thats 4 hours work (I'm being generous and including smoko), what'd you do the rest of the day?
👍
So far looking very nice ……! Where is this lovely house ?
At a secret location somewhere in England....
Probably Surrey area
@@HIYAharry …exactly was I was thinking !
Rob you need an editor we can't wait this long between videos😂❤
I have one just started!!
"to me, to you"
It's really coming together now isn't it 👍
Missing seeing you on skill builder. Assume Roger can't film this?
James won’t let him go.
All of a sudden it was up on first floor. Good job though
How much you getting paid per sqft to build like this???? Lmfao? I’m stunned you have a scaffold roof over this. I stick frame houses in Texas and I’m blown away right now lol.
We we have a very different building environment here, we have strict regulations and planning rules, we have everything from all elements of the build have to be engineered professionally, very few people stick Build here, we do have though thousands of factory timber-framed houses Built every year but even these are completely different to the way you Build in the US, we use the scaffold roof because we have an existing part of the build that is still the original, oh and we get paid for the job so I give a price and that's it we don't work out on Square footage
A day like this in the UK is a rarity and no one wants to work soaking wet and cold in the rain all day
@@ukconstruction thanks for the reply, I’d like to note I wrote this comment about 2 minutes into the video and have since watched a lot of your other videos and also found the other channel you work on. And I hope no one took my comment as knocking you guys. Nothing but respect. I like how you guys build over there. Night and day difference to here. We are stick framing 3ksqft houses in 3 or 3 days and getting 2.75-2.95 a sqft. That’s only stick framing though. I don’t even touch plywood. They call us inch and a half crews. And it’s very fast paced lol. Frame on.
What’s happened to the stream not working
Quick question, do you prefer to use screws over nails, as I understand that screws can be brittle sometimes ? Many thanks
Only use the screws initially for the assembly then we nail all the way!!!
Obvious case of brains over brawn
Robin , what kind of screws are they using to fix those trusses together. For me I love seeing a roof come together 👍
Wish the video had more detail about the trusses themselves, linking with a drawing/plan etc
Quick Q - how much did the temporary rain cover cost. Presume the structure was on hire
Check my other video of the roof design
@@ukconstruction what I meant was the actual fitting of all trusses. I watch every video of yours, twice, at times thrice! Best wishes
Are you using structural screws to join the multi-ply trusses together?
Not sure how much that temp cover was but it’s worth it !!!!
I think it was mentioned in an earlier episode that it about doubled the scaffolding cost
@@HIYAharry Well worth it though, especially in the winter. I hate rain with a passion.
just replaced my roof with new trusses over the new extension and old part of the house ,scaffolder knocked up scaffold to top of windows all around for £900.00,but quoted £8000 for a scaffold roof ,so i bought very large tarpaulin from amazon. It was a bit worrying while taking the old roof off ,rained a bit but all is well ,and i've just finished the ridge tiles about an hour ago, gonna have a beer to celebrate 6 weeks work.cheers
@@richardcapey-wade8191 It might be cheaper if one bought the scaffolding with the roof and sold it on after the job was completed...🤔🤔
Hey, why did you use trusses instead of building the rook frame yourself?
I did a video on the roof design at the Big Build where I talk about all the aspects, the main reason is that by using the pre manufactured truss frames we could easily prove the structural calculations needed by the Building Control
@@ukconstruction Thanks
Not being rude Robin, but you were one of the smaller people in our class at infant school ;)
Yes Daniel, malnourished!!
This is so far behind where they’re at right now…hard to keep up
Short video this one!
This build will take forever with the short video,s let’s have some longer one,s
Lol yep nicely not shown. 😀
