In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Swans - Bring The Sun Toussaint L'Ouverture
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

You are spot on with saying that they can easily slip into doing short Americana songs! They did just that in the 90s with their albums The Burning World, White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity, and Love Of Life. Their 2010 release My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky is also mostly that, as well as a couple tracks from 2012's The Seer and 2019's leaving meaning. Beyond Swans, Gira's solo project Angels of Light (which he created during Swans's hiatus in the 2000's) is also entirely devoted to such music.

Thanks for being just about the only person who has the patience and understanding to react to Swans videos on youtube. Please do more!

I've always loved the second part of this song. It's absolutely cinematic and impressionist - from that wild stallion and the metal tools, the whistle after the battle, that BRUTAL bassline up to Gira's devilish rambling/prayer in both french and spanish. In that context, I like to imagine those sudden "Ah!" as war beheadings and hangings. Such an intense and visceral experience flawlessly conveyed through 15 minutes of unapologetic music.

Hello!, I really like your reactions and comments, I love SWANS and I'm interested in that kind of modern music: therapeutic, cathartic and shamanic, that's a strong effect that SWANS has for me. The music of Norman Westberg (guitar, drone) is a beautiful art also.

The namesake for this song was a Haitian General in the 1700s who fought in the Haitian revolution against the French at first, and then with the French, and then once again against the French for the independence of Haiti. You can hear Gira saying "Freedom" incredibly slowly at one part of the song, and the saws, horses, etc. to me conjure imagery of oppression and slavery.
Not that that's the only thing the song is about, there's definitely much more going on. This is definitely a piece of music I'm going to be listening to and thinking back on my entire life.

It's interesting you mention Americana here, Swans has definitely done music like that in the past, as well as Micheal Gira's side projects lean more heavily into that sound. I'd recommend checking out the song "It's Coming, It's Real" from their newer album "Leaving Meaning" if you want to hear this repetitive more meditative art-rock style that leans more into Americana and a bit of Gospel as well, great stuff as always!
