Practicing Catholic here, the holy smoke referred to is incense and the clip on the green screen showing the Pope was swinging a metal piece attached to a chain over the altar holding said incense is called a thurible (usually used during specific masses like before Easter or sometimes during funerals), it's like an additional blessing on the altar when incense is involved.

I think that barbershop one was inspired by an urban legend. There's an old urban legend in which this hairdresser thought the guy in the chair was touching himself, so she knocked him out by breaking a bottle of hair product over his head. When she removed the cover, however, he was just cleaning his glasses (I guess because whoever came up with that story thinks everyone cleans glasses without seeing them 😐)
