i like it. (the yellow modded SG). having that toggle switch in the upper horn area would be great if you are a Les Paul player. even though that other switch isn't being used it's nice to know that with just a little bit of clever wiring it could be made a double/single coil switch, a kill switch. would also be a handy switch for a piezo or even a sustainer pickup (ala Steve Hackett). i'd rock it. Gibson should consider playing with this idea.
I actually really like that control layout on the first one. As for the toggle switch, I like them more than push-pulls, kinda easier to operate. And while this one isn’t doing anything, you can get toggles with more poles for very fancy switching options you can’t do on a regular push-pull, like on some Charvels.
I agree , i'd rather have a switch than my current set-up of push pull knobs. Sometime's it's a pain in the ass when you want to switch to single quickly!
I HATE push-pull pots. Every single one I've ever had on one of my guitars turned into crackling dodgy mess within a few months, no matter which brand or price level. You get what you pay for with low-budget pots, i.e. not much, but the relatively expensive ones weren't really any better for daily constant use. I'd always go with mini toggles or, if you don't want more than one switch on your guitar for a "clean" look (a lot of people don't like the "airplane cockpit look" like on the old B.C. Rich or Ibanez guitars), with a super/freeway/mega switch with 6, 7, or 10 positions instead of a regular 5-way blade or 3-way toggle. I don't understand why they didn't make that mini switch a phase switch, a control bypass/direct-to-output, or a simple kill switch - make it do _something?_ Scratch that - looking at the "expert soldering" I DO understand why! Whoever produced that mess most likely wouldn't know how to wire a "blower" or "kill" correctly...
Unless you refinish the entire guitar - or at least the entire body - that's never going to look good. And even with a full refinish in a non-transparent colour, the outline of the dowel will become visible over time because the woods of the body and the plug will never age/dry out/react to different temperatures and humidities the exact same way. Worst case? You'll wake up one cold winter morning and your SG has a nice perfectly round crack in the finish.
I have mini-toggle on one of my 70's Les Pauls. It wasnt connected when I got the guitar so I soldered it to work as a mute/on-off switch. It might seem redundant, but it's great when you're recording. You just hit that little toggle and everything goes quiet instantly
On the Pro mod Yellow SG looks like they could've gotten away with replacement of the jack so that it would've taken up the space where it is and where the switch was installed. I don't know what is done to make a quilted top pop like that LP you were offered but it looks gorgeous. The gold SG would've looked good against a black case interior but I'd bet a dark purple interior would've really been perfect. I would rick it though. I wish it was me you were searching for that one piece top LP for.
The LP Elegants were stunning, I’m kind of surprised you didn’t pull the trigger. It would be so cool to buy something online and it showed up with a top, back and sides like those guitars. Great episode!
I think it's actually cool and smart... Although I've gotten used to the SG's classic wiring layout for decades just like anyone else I always thought the pickup switch was "in the way" when I wanted to use the controls...And while I'm at it I always thought the output jack was too close to the neck tone 😁😁😁... But what the hell...We've been enjoying the SG as she is for 6 decades...
Sounds like you have a pretty wack strumming technique there. I'm kind of confused as to how you could be hitting the toggle switch on a SG through normal playing. It's really nowhere within the picking area.
I really like it. I would swap out that toggle switch for a kill switch and redo the wiring (so it doesn't look like it was done by a blind monkey with Parkinson's). Other than that, I am used to my LP so muscle memory would prefer the pickup toggle up there. Clever workaround to avoid plugging holes and either refinishing or trying to touch up and match what's there.
Greetings Austin, and everyone else! That description of the first SG is a bit misleading, Pro-Modified should also include some professional soldering as well as the additional routing, in my opinion, it would not take too much effort to either have it professionally wired, or rewire it yourself if you are skilled enough to do it correctly. The person that previously owned it probably thought that they spent plenty getting the routing done and that they would save some cash doing the soldering themselves, but obviously they were not entirely satisfied with the results. I know that would not have been a mistake I would have made, but then, I do know how to solder, I also would have painted the cavities with some shielding paint or would have treated it with some other shielding material. I would also have installed a functional switch, possibly a kill switch like those found on Buckethead Les Pauls, or something else, might as well have it be functional instead of just a hole filler. The gold SG is beautiful, very tasteful. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨
Sometimes a mini toggle is better than push pull or push push pots Normally the mini toggles give you three settings & the push pulls give you 2 Of course you can use multiples, but still have more option with a mini toggle But both are good options I have both.
Trogly, that was my Les Paul Elegant you featured. Thanks for talking about it! Was an absolutely gorgeous guitar with figuring like I’ve never seen before on a Gibson.
