I got the copper coil almost a year ago it took a couple months for me to not feel squeamish about it but I’m so glad I got it done! Ive found it so much better than the pill with no hormones and it’s also made my periods way more regular without having to worry about missing a pill and getting breakthrough bleeding. It’s great not having to worry about it and I’ve had no problems with it at all. It was pretty sore getting it fitted - definitely ask for anaesthetic! But either way it’s over really quickly so don’t let the pain put you off. My periods are heavy and cramps are bad on it but nothing unmanageable and I used to get quite bad periods anyways. If you don’t normally get bad periods then it shouldn’t be an issue. But anyways best of luck with it ❤️

I have the copper coil - I’ve tried everything but the hormones were so unbearable.. The procedure was uncomfortable at least, I’m sure I nearly kicked the woman in the face lmaoo but it’s been 3 years now and I’m actually getting it removed in 2 weeks.. the monthly period pains are so excruciating that the first time I genuinely thought I was dying but I kept putting it off thinking that oh a week a month isn’t the worst but when I tell you between the heaviness of my periods and the pain, it’s been hell but if you’re doing it for your mental health, I would definitely recommend it! I just hope it doesn’t hurt too much!

Hey chick 💜 After over 10 years on the pill - having negative side effects, I came off it and had the copper coil fitted. The procedure was excruciating (for me anyway). I’m not 100% sure why they offer it to women who haven’t had children because nothing will prepare you for it. After it - initially a little bleeding and light cramping however for at least 6 months after it I had thee most insane lower abdominal pains. I can honestly say I think it encouraged a cyst to form on my ovaries. I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been +2 dress sizes and I can honestly say I’m actually eating less/healthier than I ever have.
I really would think twice about it. If I had a crystal ball I probably wouldn’t have had it fitted. Mine has been in for 2 years now and the only reason I haven’t had it removed is because im genuinely scared too. I done all my research and read lots of horror stories but I thought I would be different. Hope this helps! Xxxx

Hi Hannah! I got the copper coil fitted back in June 2021. I'm not going to lie, insertion was quite painful. For the rest of the day afterwards I had very bad cramping. But it did go away the next day. I bleed constantly for over 2 months straight, but it eventually stopped. I now have regular periods, but my periods are very heavy compared to what they used to be. Cramps are also worse than they were pre-IUD. All that being said, I'm still glad that I got it, because it means that you don't have to put unnatural hormones into your body and therefore don't suffer with hormonal contaception side effects. It's handy that you don't have to think about it, and it last for 5 years.

I had the copper coil as I also didn’t want any hormones but as someone with no period pain and light periods usually, I had excruciating pain and very heavy periods, lasting up to 2 weeks. I changed to the mirena coil with hormones and it’s been great, no pain and no periods and I’ve not had any change in diet/appetite, weight or moods. My skin this winter is also been better but that may not be related. Everyone is different and they say the copper one can cause heavier periods for 6 months so it should get better over time, I was just impatient and wanted the cramps to end! The insertion is painful but over with very quickly. Good luck with yours!

Copper coil is the best contraception I've had. No hormones was important for me. Its quite uncomfortable to get in, and i had really bad cramps that night but eventually settled in. I've always had heavy, sore periods so can't say if it affected them for me because it's basically the same but I know that's quite a common complaint. Ive also gained a lot of weight but hard to say if its the coil or not because it supposedly doesnt really impact weight (from a medical perspective) but ive heard that it can from other girls experiences. I've had mine 5 years and still glad I chose it because mentally im so much better so the weight gain is worth it. Little tip, sit on your hands and it brings you cervix forward which can help with making the process a bit easier. G'luck!😊

I have the Minerva coil. I suggest for the coil that you take a couple of paracetamol before you go as you will have really heavy cramping straight after and for about 24hrs so a hot water bottle is also essential. It definitely has some benefits and once it’s done it’s done for 5 years. If you have any questions or want to know my experiences with the coil let me know.

I had the copper coil inserted about 2 years ago. Didn’t have excruciating pain, but it was more like a big cramp. No bleeding at all, was never in pain afterwards, I was really lucky I guess. I also haven’t had a period since I’ve had mine inserted, and I haven’t had any other issues with it. I’d really recommend it as a contraceptive because I’ve also been on the pill for like 3 years, and it definitely affected my mood and appetite. I gained like 20-25 lbs. while on the pill, and almost a month after I stopped taking it I immediately started losing weight, and I didn’t change my diet or anything while on/off the pill, it was crazy, but I felt so much better after.

Hi, I’ve had the copper coil for a year and a half now. I found it wasn’t too bad when it was fitted it was sore but not so sore that I wouldn’t have it done again, I’ve been on the pill and the rod implant in your arm and the coil has been a god send in comparison. Your periods do get stronger and more painful but last a much shorter time in my personal experience and after a while they do get less painful, hope this helps I don’t think you should worry❤️

There’s no “perfect” one-size fits all when it comes to contraception. So it is trial and error. Going on someone personal experience is hard because if it worked perfectly for everyone then there would be no need for an alternative contraception!
That said, I have the copper coil and it’s changed my life. I tried so many different pills and had different side effects on every one I tried (depressed then bad skin then sore boobs and then weight gain) so I gave up and went to natural contraception but then was always anxious that I was pregnant. The copper coil has been great. My body has its natural cycles and I’m not worried about pregnancy.
It didn’t hurt for me when I had it placed in. I took some painkillers and hour before and honestly I was shocked when the nurse said she had finished fitting it. After I had period cramps for the evening then that was it. My first 6 periods were a bit more painful than usual but now they’re absolutely fine. Also for the first month I felt slightly sick (read up about copper in the body) but that passed after a month.
Honestly the freedom it has given me is amazing. The side effect of a sickness feeling was gone after a month whereas with the pill I had so many issues with every single one I tried. The cramps I could deal with and as I said now it’s returned to normal.
Don’t be worried about it, just give it a go. If it doesn’t work for you you can have it taken out again :)
