I think if God were to reveal himself entirely, we would be so overwhelmed that we would lose our freedom of choice. Therefore, God reveals himself to as as much as he can so that we can freely choose to love him back. He wants our love to be voluntary.
Why would God setup such a system if he wants us to believe in him willingly?
Every Christian I have ever spoken to hold this contradicting believe that God has Unlimited Knowledge and Power. While simultaneously believing there are very specific limitations to God's power and/or knowledge.
@@username82765 I need you to engage with the point that I made. "Why would God set up such a system?" The point I made is that if we were to see God face to face we would be so overwhelmed that we would be incapable of not loving him. But God wants our love to be voluntary. So he reveals himself only so much so that we can choose to love him without being coerced into doing so. He is not hidden completely.

@@username82765 You need to explain exactly how it doesn't make sense. There is nothing in my insight that would contradict God's omniscience and omnipotence.
God DID have the power and the knowledge to arrange things in such a way that we would have to love him. But that would be a kind of rape. Love must be freely chosen. And so he chose not to arrange things in that way.
It is not opposed to God's omnipotence that he wants our love to be voluntary. That's why we do not see God face to face until we are united with him in heaven. Right now he is proposing to us. But he withdraws so that the decision can be ours. If we respond positively, then heaven will be our marriage.

So either God wanted a system where the majority of humans would NOT believe he exists let alone love him or he is NOT Omnipotent and Omniscient.

A reasonable person wouldn't say it did not happen, because that claim cannot be shown to be true.
Likewise, there is nothing beyond the testimony of the Bible to demonstrate that it did happen.
@@BFizzi719 I wasn't clear maybe. Atheists are the only one's who have a problem with "divine hiddenness" and it's simply because they're atheists. Alternatively, Christians inherently believe God revealed Himself.
Correction - atheists universally do not CLAIM these events didn’t happen, they’re just asking for proof that they did and not willing to just take it on faith that they did. A billion Muslims believe Mohammed flew up to heaven on a winged horse. Should you accept that this event happened because a large number of people believe it did?
@@Jared__Bowden You're 100% right. I'm only speaking about those who use divine hiddenness as a reason for atheism (in the sense that God does not exist). The belief that God doesn't exist would then lead to belief that Jesus wasn't God which would then lead to the question of why hasn't God revealed himself?

Lack of belief in gods is not an active belief. Does not believing in Thor qualify as a “belief”?
You’re making the common theist error of that equates skepticism of someone else’s claim of a god, to be equivalent to holding an active belief. For the average atheist who was once religious and believed in a god, they simply lost that belief in that particular god. See the difference?
As for ‘divine hiddenness’ (that’s the first time I’ve come across that term) ... if you’re not able to demonstrate in physical form that which you claim to exist, then don’t be surprised when people reject your incomplete and absent evidence for your claims. It’s no different for any other make believe figure. If it can’t be proven to exist, there’s no good reason to believe it does just because millions of people believe it and the book it was based on.
No man made argument or materials are a valid substitute for an actual observable deity.

The book he referred to is Miracles: The Credibility of the New Testament Accounts, by Craig Keener. It has a broad survey of historical and contemporary accounts of miracles. He also addresses Hume's skepticism and various naturalistic explanations. I think it's a well-balanced treatment of the issues.
Another thing on divine hiddenness: there was a time when God made his presence perfectly clear to us, and yet we still disobeyed and ate from the forbidden tree (I’m not a creationist btw). Why do we therefore think that if he made his presence known that we would actually worship him?
It would grant us the opportunity for an actual choice of belief.
@Jeramy G i’m not christian but the problem is, if God did make his presence known, individuals will have no choice but to obey Him since whatever he may have revealed (ie. the bible) would be ultimately true.
@Jeramy G well, the christian doctrine prides itself on voluntary obedience. many religions believe in voluntary obedience to a creator. If God were to reveal himself, that would remove the possibility of a chance for *most* people.
and the game of chance is a choice. the overlying doctrine is ‘you have been provided with the proofs, now it is your decision if you would like to believe.’

Well this semantical choice doctrine you’re describing isn’t apparent in reality.
In the U.S. - the overall population of Christianity that converted in is an abysmal 6% - it grows entirely due to birth as per Pew research.
If the doctrine says the evidence is available - I suppose I’d like to ask why it seems that birth to a Christian mother seems to be the only determinate of our eternal afterlife?
You’d also find evidence readily available that nearly all first world countries aside from America have become majority secular at this point.
Places that are converting at slightly higher rates are 3rd world countries - places that are also statistically of lower intelligence, less studied etc.
I find this peculiar if we see this data and that a god “provided evidence.”
Even if we weren’t to discuss the data surrounding this concept -
On purely philosophical levels; How much free will did we actually have under a god model...
Suppose the conversation lies in how much god knew about the events of reality before pressing play; then asking how much of our reality and our minds capacity this entity would’ve defined.
The “choice” in every way I look - is merely chance and circumstance.
I can choose to follow a King’s dictations - I cannot be blamed for a choice about the possibility of an invisible sentience that may or may not exist.
If enlightened is a mandated parameter anyway.
@Jeramy G like i’ve previously stated, i’m not christian so i’m not gonna speak about something i’m not sure about (ie. the nature of the christian god and His proofs to humanity) what i believe i can confidently state is that the christian doctrine believes in voluntary obedience, due to perhaps philosophical or historical proofs (of the bible)

The genetic fallacy is probably the dumbest objection I've ever heard. I'd love to have an atheist say it to my face so I can turn it back on him. "If you were raised an atheist, wouldn't that make YOUR beliefs invalid?" Not an argument.

EDIT: The way I worded that makes me sound confrontational. I would ask an atheist that question but I wouldn't do it in a mean or sarcastic tone. We must preach the truth and remember to do so out of love. God is good!

Most atheists where not raised atheists but became atheists after examining the evidence for God and finding said evidence unconvincing.
I was born into an atheist family myself but all my dad taught me was to use my critical thinking skills and make my own mind up about religion.

1:50 It was surprising to me that the Dr. Craig doesn't know the case of the Calanda's Miracle, which a man amputee of a leg it was miracously restored by intercession of the Pilar's Virgin. It take place in Spain in XVII century and in fact is the miracle whick have the most quantity of documents that prove its historical authenticity.
Dear atheist/agnostics, please just listen and research the truth for yourself. Just because Christians decide to make a video discussing religion does not mean. This is now your opportunity to be a sounding board. Don't troll the comments section. Comments sections are not the place for in depth theological/philosophical debate. If this is the place you think you can win an argument it just shows the weakness of your feeling about your argument. Having trite conversation is not beneficial.

Why would it be pure conjecture to postulate that more people would come to form a relationship with god if he made himself known but it’s not conjecture for Dr Craig to assert that the opposite would occur if God made himself known? How does he arrive at this conclusion if not by the same conjecture he is accusing the atheist of
What he said was "I think it's _possible_ that ... and if he were to make himself more well known..." He also uses "may" and other softening words throughout his rebuttal. So, he doesn't seem to be asserting that the opposite would happen. Rather illustrating why the claim is not necessarily guaranteed.

Regarding the hiddeness of God, then He would be a Dictator. He chose to give us Free Will. To me, this makes TOTAL sense.

I've seen people make this same argument to excuse their poor parenting: "Well, I may have been neglectful and left bruises on my kid, but it toughened him up!" (It's like that song "A Boy Named Sue".") Some have also made that argument to make African-Americans feel better: "Well, if your ancestors hadn't been enslaved, you wouldn't be here today enjoying the freedoms you have!"
God can heal amputees, but only after everybody's dead! You have to wait until you become a zombie to see that!
1. Capital punishment on all the plants, fungus, animals, insects... the point is, would a moral God really punish and judge everything, plants and all, for the sin of humans? Maybe it was just a natural disaster and nothing to do with punishing everything on earth.

That’s just a god dishing out another helping of capital punishment because he judged them and thinks they deserve it.

Craig thinks these arguments are silly and amusing instead of convincing and powerful, yet that's how us atheists feel about his arguments and his responses.

Well Jesus healed an amputee in Luke 22:51, he healed the ear of the servant of the high priest.
And in John 11:39 he revived Lazarus, and if someone stinks he's in the second stage of decomposition, and in that case, god has returned the atoms and molecules back in order for Lazarus.
The first one is definitely a healing miracle of an amputee, and Lazarus is at least a "micro healing of an amputee" ;-).
We can see why Dawkins refused to debate Prof Craig. Craig's only need would be to point out Dawkins' favourite genetic fallacy. Dawkins would have nothing left to say.
One of two things must be true.
1.God does not care if you believe in it(thus doesn't care what religion one does or doesn't follow)
Or
2. God does not exist.
Here is why.
No one chooses the beliefs they have. Now many mistakenly believe that we can chose the beliefs we genuinely hold(no blame, you can't help it).
We can test this now. Choose to genuinely believe that 2+2=5
Choose to genuinely believe that I am the Earth communicating to you via magical earth vibes into Facebook.
Were you able to choose to genuinely believe either of those examples? Of course not because beliefs aren't chosen, they are arrived at. Beliefs are just the conclusions of past experiences combined with our DNA and biology.
That means that my lack of belief in gods solely rests on God (assuming it exists). God knows exactly what would cause me to believe or not believe it existed. It is fully out of my control. That means that God really doesn't care what anyone believes or God does not exist. Both conclusions make religion pointless.
Religion is bogus while God is not.

@roasted pancakes I agree people believe crazy things. Its due to prior causes. No one gets to choose what they deem logical. Beliefs are the sum total of all of our experiences. People with essentric beliefs came to them due to past experiences. Perhaps they experiences things that caused distrust in authority which caused them to doubt the noon landing, which lead to a distrust in NASA, then they watched a flat earther video which made sense to them because they believed NASA could not be trusted. Whenever I meet a flat earther they tend to have a lot of distrust and believe many odd things.
Beliefs tell a story about an individuals life. Every single experience one has molds them to who they are at that moment. Its why you will not be able to choose to genuinely believe that the earth is donut shaped on the spot. Now you may say you do not want to but wants are just like beliefs in that they are not chosen either but rather arrived at through prior causes.
Don't believe me(don't worry I do not judge as you can't help it)? Choose to genuinely want to put your face on a hot stove(BTW I wish you no harm its simple a mental excercise). Notice you were not able to do it because just like beliefs wants are arrived at through causation, not chosen.

@Blue Skeptic You know good and well Christians don't believe in magic sky wizards. God is not a being, as you, I, or even a wizard would be a being. He is not inside the universe. He is being itself, existence himself, ipsum esse. As stated throughout the Bible and by Saint Thomas Aquinas. He is the necessary ground of reality, the unmoved mover, uncaused cause.
Second, it's not a god of the gaps fallacy. I disagree with Omega it's not a scientific impossibility that nothing created everything. It's a philosophical impossibility. It doesn't make sense. So, it's not a gap in any knowledge. It has been thought through and logic has shown us that something coming from nothing is impossible. That is an argument not a "gap".

Concerning the genetic fallacy, are there exception to it? It seems like if we knew that the origin of some belief was that somebody made it up, wouldn't that have some bearing on whether or not it's true? After all, if somebody made something up, but it turned out to be true anyway, that would be a remarkable coincidence.
Well there's a difference in saying the origin of someone holding a belief and the origin of the belief itself. The genetic fallacy is only about the origin of someone's holding for a belief.

Where does your God get their morals from?
IF God exist, then God is Existence Itself. Everything that exists exists because of God "communicates" existence to it, Moral Laws included. And IF God exists, is Infinitely Intelligent (is Intelligence Itself) and therefore morals are correct.
Now you still can believe God doesn't exist, I get that, but the question doesn't make sense in any case. If God doesn't exist, the question doesn't make sense; and if God exist, the question doesn't make sense either.
If you want to explore how Theist make sense of that, I'd recommend reading Edward Feser's Book "Aquinas". Again, you might still disagree, but at least you'll understand the concept.

Gustavo Andres Herrera - the morals defined by any given deity that man has once upon a time believed in, are subjective to the deity itself and the believers are expected to carry out this gods morality without question. If a deity says drinking coco cola is immoral, then by your explanation it is declared as immoral.
Many things that are declared to be “moral” or “sinful” are nonsensical, such as when a deity specifies what you can and can’t consume or what you can and can’t wear, what day’s you are allowed to work and what days you’re not, what ways you are to refer to said deity and what ways you are not, disloyalty or disbelief it said deity can result in barbaric punishment including death, depending upon the deity. In many cases, god acts more like the supreme leader of North Korea than he does a kind, caring and loving god.

Me: When Jesus restored the ear of the solider whose ear was cut off by Peter, wasn't that a good example of an instance where Jesus healed an amputee? Another classic example that comes close to answer this question is the healings of every one of the lepers mentioned in Bible.
Consider this: Leperousy can cause any part of the body to shink till the point of its non-existence. So, healing the lepers whose certain body part shrank due to Leperousy is actually as good as restoring a new body part to an amputee.
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

@RetroMan I haven't seen an argument for theism that isn't based on one or more fallacies. There might be one, but most apologetics are just very good at hopping back and fourth between fallacies by "clarifying" their arguments. This is also what Craig does.

@@omega0195 I see "nothing creating everything" as being equally possible as "something created everything from nothing". The most likely explanation is that something (I think this could be energy in the form of photons) always existed. This breaks the last number of current known physical laws.

Dr. Lane is not aware of the "Azusa Street" story, back in the early 1900's. People were (which's is well documented) restored amputees. This is historical fact.
Please show your references , its impossible to regrow limbs.
I don't even bother to explain it to them. You can tell when someone wants to understand and when someone is just ignorant. If someone doesn't want to know they don't want to know. They just live with a hope that there nothing after death and of course they are going to say "but Christians live with the hope that there is a heaven". But do you then live with the hope that there is no hell??

If God provided us with undeniable proof, how could we have faith? I don't have faith in the existence of the universe. If God eliminated all natural evil, how could we have any hope that we'd overcome our non-existent problems? If God dispensed instant justice, how could we have any love? That is, we could be grateful or resentful, but we do not LOVE those who merely pay us what is owed. For God to reveal His nature, God can't be the omnipotent Genie of atheists' imagination. God gave us free will; free will requires doubt, adversity, and injustice in the same way and for the same reason that light requires dark. We could only obey or disobey the omnipotent Genie; we could not come to know Him.
So your god doesnt't care about humans and doesn't care to stop rape or murder. If you worship a god like that you're a fool and a coward.
I have never felt how it's like to be blind and still I like to have sight. It's a common misconception that you can only feel love if you've felt hate.
@@erikeriks Huh? I never argued that you need hate to feel love; I argued that you need problems/suffering/injustice/doubt - not hate. There's a difference.
God has healed amputees, there is the famous story of, if I am remembering the correct person, Saint John of Damascus, who had his hand chopped off and then through prayer was granted the joy of the miracle of having it reattached. This is the problem of arguing from other than a Catholic perspective, you will always lack the fullness of revelation and therefore the full ability to give the answers for our faith.

How is such a debate enlightening?
The earth is flat.
Religion is a geographical construct. If you were born in America, Christian. Born in India, Hindu. Born in Israel, Jewish. Born in Middle East, Muslim. Born in China, Buddhist.. 100's of religions and gods, not one of them have been proven to be true. The Christian holy book is a vile, disgusting book full of genocide, death, rape, slavery, murder, infanticide, adultery and so many more horrors. It is also largely plagiarized from earlier writings, The story of Mithra for one. Read the bible, God is given credit for killing up to 3 million people not to mention animals. Satan is said to have killed around 10... If God is perfect and all knowing, powerful, etc.. why did he have to destroy the Earth , why wasn't it perfect to start with? I’m sorry but you are incorrect. Have you actually read the Bible cover to cover? Have you actually read the stories you claim the Bible was copied from? Cause if you actually read both stories they are nothing alike. I want you to have a better understanding of the Bible. @@brittany7196 I'm here to discuss and debate but you should point out verses and scripture to prove me wrong (not that the bible is any authority) . I have the read the Christian bible, the Quran, the Vedas, etc.. and all say the same thing, have faith. Have faith in 1,000's of year old writings that constantly contradict their self, no thanks. My one example of Mithra, born of a virgin on Dec. 25, had 12 followers, was crucified, rose from the dead and on and on was documented well before the Christian bible was written.

A loving god killed every living thing that he created. This included the evil animals, plants, and babies. yet he claims to be all knowing, and merciful. Doesn't this present a conflict in claim. If god is placing us in circumstances. Isn't this implying fate, and lack of free will. So when you pray aren't you going against gods will. No one argues that the sun doesn't exist. So belief is based in evidence. Maybe that's why some saw the sun as god.
