How do you have such good wifi? I am going to Zambia with Peace Corps next year and this was one of my first thoughts hahaha. Also I didn't know Peace Corps volunteers had to often supply their own furniture? I feel like this makes no sense lol. How do you get it to your house?

Hiya! So exciting to hear you'll be heading out to Zambia soon to be a PCV! And I'd be happy to answer your questions.
      1. We don't have any wifi because we lived off the grid in the village but we did have service on our phones through local service providers out there; Airtel for me, and I was lucky enough to have pretty solid connection in my village and was able to get a hotspot going. Some sites are really remote and don't get signal in most places, but I had a site with a pretty reliable signal.
      2. We didn't exactly have to supply our own furniture. Peace Corps gives you a settling in allowance that is enough to purchase some modest furniture, food and anything else you would need to to settle into your village. I was lucky enough to have a lot of furniture leftover from the previous volunteer but it's not uncommon to arrive to your house completely empty. It really all just depends
      3. When we moved into our houses, you get a ride from the Peace Corps staff in your province. They fill up a landcruiser with all of your luggage, furniture and items, and drop you off at your house.
      Hope. this helps! :)

Were you able to get your pets adequate medical care? I imagine vets would be difficult to find. I love the idea of getting a pet while in Peace Corps but I'd want to make sure it was vaccinated and neutered to avoid health problems and overpopulation.

Do you get the side eye for wearing ripped up jeans?

Not really, but I usually only wore them around my house. Never to any meetings or large gatherings in the village.

Question, how are your pets treated? I’ve heard horror stories about PCV pets being horribly mistreated. I get it but it makes me so sad

So sorry for this late reply, but back when I was in Zambia, my pets were treated just how any pet of mine would be treated back home, because they lived with me in my house. I was also very fortunate to have a very sweet host family that treated the pets with respect and love. This is not always the norm because the Zambian relationship with pets is different than the American one. Dogs and cats are usually seen as tools or utilities for protection or pest control rather than companions. But keeping open communication about how you want your animals to be treated is always helpful. Our host families are usually willing to do whatever it takes to make us feel more at home also so expressing how you feel to them definitely goes a long way.
