Hey Michael, thanks for the tutorial. Your idea of using clipping layers for non-destructive retouching of the high layer is awesome, especially in combination with the warping. I never saw your version of dodging and burning. I use a 50% neutral grey layer in "soft light" mode. and just draw on it with a black or white brush (black for darken, white for brighten) at 3 or 4 percent. I figure it might be a bit faster than your version since you don't need to switch layers for alternating between black and white. You also have a nice overview of what you have done when you switch it on an of in one click. Is there a reason you don't use it like that, or is it just personal preference? your way to deal with hair at the edge of the forehead is really cool man ! thanks for trick :) i used to do pretty much the same but using the clone stamp tool for the high layer, why do you prefer copying the layer ? keep up the good work Michael :)

@Michael Woloszynowicz On one of the articles you linked about frequency separation there is a step that suggest adding a surface blur duplicated from the original layer for removing some blotches of the skin, when i add this layer in between the high pass and low pass it automatically cancels the effects on these two and i am not able to add the blur eather, anything im doing wrong?

Hi Michael, I see that you always D&B using curves. Is there a specific reason why you don't change the blending mode to luminosity so it doesn't mess up you saturation?

I was doing fine until I came to the part where you do sampling in the blank layer between the low and high layer. My eyedropper doesn't change color no matter where I sample. It keeps that grey color and I just can't paint on that blank layer. How do you do it? I have to go on the Low layer itself to do the sampling and painting. I'm using photoshop cc 2014 and the sampling and painting in the blank layer doesn't work.
I was wondering, the idea of using skin grafts is good, but from what I saw on the video wouldn't it be faster to work the frequency separation with the healing and clone tools from the start? You would not need to do a "post clean up" after the skin graft... From what I've done, most of the touch up you're doing with the painting and cleaning I do it all with the clone and healing on each of the frequencies, I thought it would be faster but the touch ups (painting and healing later) makes it not as fast as I thought. Maybe its just me, and the "newbieness" of not having experience with skin grafting, that I think its not really as fast as just normal cleaning on each of the frequencies and then dodging and burning. when I select layer using lasso, the layer keeps on appearing as transparent, how can I fix that? I tried setting the Lasso tool feathering to 0px or 0.2 but it still does that...I am so stuck!

What is your determining factor when you are doing these micro-corrections? When balancing the size and placement of the eyes, for example, I'm curious to learn how you know what the correct little nudges in one direction versus another would be. Is it just a symmetrical thing? Or is it something that you've learned through work as requested by advertisers? In other words, I'd like to know what the ideal form of the face etc. is that you base your corrections on so that I too can know the fancy stuff advertisers and peeps are looking for ;)
Why does every one have to insist for a slow process of FS when a combination of healing brush and toggling between Lighten mode and darken with the clone tool suffices for this type of retouching?

It was a small deep octa as the main above and a white beauty dish as fill below. Also a spotlight boomed above the model for the background.

I find I get better results with copy. Clone-stamp can lead to a bit of softness as you gradually paint in. Just my preference though.
