The honkai beast that killed kallen was actually otto letting it go and go into the town on the day kallen was going to be sentenced to death. So as a distraction, otto let the honkai beast go and kallen could get away like otto planned but kallen instead decided to try saving the people from the honkai beast. Otto feels guilt for what he did and decided to switch his life for hers.
But on the contrary, the unwanted thing is that Otto sacrificed himself just like Kallen and if I may be honest 5 things are 1. Kallen Kaslana is my first clone 2. Otto who sacrificed himself is a clone of Otto my damn old geezer 3. Actually the identity of all the Honkai are humans themselves 4. The perpetrators behind all these terrible things are the entire church and 5. There is a big possibility that Otto and Kallen are only used as shields, tools, pawns, and also puppets because all parties the church is swallowed up by their own malice
