I am a disabled/ full time wheelchair single mother of 2 teenage boys and there are so many things that I rely on to live independently and take care of myself and my boys. iPhones, smart watches light switches voice activated and so many other ways. I live a VERY happy and independent life I never thought I’d experience in my lifetime.

I agree with you Molly that technology will and does help us in so many ways. The only issue I see is a lot of technology is very expensive. Especially for many disabled individuals who are on very fixed incomes like Social Security.

These tech options sound so cool, and also cost-prohibitive. I hope access to the technology can happen for the huge percentage of disabled individuals living in poverty

    • @RiverWoods111
      @RiverWoods111 8 месяцев назад +6

Technology gets cheaper just like all things as it gets released and people start using it. The first ones will be expensive, but then they will come down in price. Also, because of the accessibility that they will create this sector of society won't be living in poverty anymore. They will have more opportunities.

@@RiverWoods111 I honestly don't think it's going to go that way for accessible equipment. manual wheelchairs right now are prohibitively expensive, and they've been around for ages

❤i agree! I think it is a horrible tragedy that they CRANK up the prices of specialty items for disabilities...when most disabled can't buy that...ex: why do not ALL wheelchair users have access to electric motorization in SOME form at a reasonable price? What is this 1830?

I have been watching the development of robotic dogs for years thinking that they would be perfect for the blind community as guide dogs. First, they can actually be GPS devices that can not only navigate what is around you but navigate you to whatever store you want to go to. They could be programmed to talk to the self-driving cars, so when your car pulls up your robotic dog connects to it and knows exactly where it is. The robotic dog could actually be tracking it as it is coming to pick you up.

I complained to two bank branches that their "hood"" on either their debit/Credit Machines, and on the ATM are a accessibility issue because only the 5 have a "bump" and the hood covers the first 3 letters on the PIN pad. so if I need to see the those 2 numbers on the top row I have to bend down and look hard for it or else I will screw up my PIN.

We definitely need self driving cars in Australia! Technology here is starting to get better but we still have a long way to go. Please do more of these videos Molly, they really make my day! I also like your guide dog training videos, I know some of them are emotional but that's just part of life and I'm in the process of receiving a second guide dog and finding it extremely difficult because I'm still missing my previous guide dog. He retired on good terms but I'll never receive a new guide dog exactly like the previous one. every dog is different and it's going to take me a very long time to trust a new dog. I appreciate that some of the things you discussed are difficult to talk about on a public forum so please take your time owhen doing your videos. I also understand if you can't do videos every day. We all have our lives to live and I'm sorry that some of your life has been difficult for you. as for all of your good times, please keep them coming as often as possible, of course if you're comfortable that is. We all love to hear from you!

Just wanted to let you know, but The Seeing Eye is a guide dog school based in New Jersey (I actually work for them). So to label all guide dogs as seeing eye dogs is actually not correct phrasing. All dogs from The Seeing Eye are guide dogs, but not all guide dogs are Seeing Eye dogs. I believe Elton and, all of Molly’s dogs, are from a Canadian based school called Mira Foundation. There’s actually about 90 schools world wide! Just thought I would let you know. Hope this helps. 😃

As a disabled person myself I’m really excited for all the advances that are going to improve people’s lives and independence! My concern is cost though, it’s all incredibly expensive, when disabled people are often far below the poverty line. Of course I hope as more people use it the cost lowers, but that isn’t really what I’ve seen happen on the market so far

One thing I wish was more consistent across the US is bioptic driving. I have Stargardt Disease and not quite legally blind. Thankfully I've been pretty stable the last 3 years. Found out from my Low Vision Specialist back in June that only if I lived about 25 miles away into the next state, I'd be legally allowed to drive with a bioptic which would be totally game changing. He let me walk around the neighborhood with a bioptic, too. The amount of things I could see with it, I almost cried.

A camera on your hat or on a necklace with AI and a way to give you high resolution information of what that camera can see, perhaps via Open Water headset, or I heard on the back of the tongue are sensitive areas that could provide for certain resolution, so then you can see in that way. I also think audio information can translate the visual world, so you could hear a kind of tone that translates highlights of what the camera can see in a sort of clicks, whistles, and pulses but in a much more pleasant way, perhaps integrated with any music, to kind of modulate that music, in a way that you can hear where walls are, where the chair is, where the stairs are, where other people are, where whatever you need is, using AI too. I am in tech and I think I could get the right design house and tech companies to do this, if only I had the budget, if I could decide what major tech companies should do as a priority to help millions of blind people. The audio or sensitive information resolution could also be so to translate for example how beautiful someone's face is into a beautiful sound/music that makes you kind of understand who they are, also identifies every person differently. You could instantly hear if it's a man/woman, what age, about their hair, skin color, about their clothes, about what they are doing or where they are walking, you could identify if all as a sound wave + something you can sense with as much resolution can be possible.

Technology is great, as long as it's not used as a cope-out for creating inaccessible environments, and as long as we still keep a wide variety of accomodations. It wouldn't be cool if your only way to navigate the world depends on one corporation that can change the terms and conditions at any moment.

I have been a respite worker for a young girl living with Rhett Syndrome and we have been part of research for this technology. it’s been absolutely incredible to see the ways this technology can provide independence for those who are unable to use their hands, legs, and/or verbal communication. You can use your brain to drive power wheelchairs, play video games, create art, etc. This technology is only in its beginning stages and has already provided incredible opportunities for individuals with disability and it is beautiful to see where technology is going.

Society needs to care enough to put that technology in place, and make it affordable. The first barrier is funding, and funding is largely at the discretion of government. Vote, vote, vote! The other barrier is getting the message out to tech companies and research institutes that these things matter even when they’re not the most profitable areas. Molly, you are one of the voices putting that out there. ❤

I'm not blind myself. But I am a person who stutters. Obviously, I can't benefit from technology nearly as much as the blind and a few other communities can (though there are a few apps and gizmos I could potentially look into one day - and I'm all for that too.) I can however absolutely relate to the 'cure culture" frustration here too. I grew up in a world where the goal was always seemingly to 'fix' me... to make me just like other people. And even as a child, I'm not sure I ever fully wanted that exactly. I mean... I did because I was taught to want that, yeah. But on a real, human level, not exactly. I wanted a world where different was acceptable... where different was welcome, no matter the difference. And I wanted a world that would work with us... met us partway instead of forcing us to struggle, working three times as hard to get half as far, and then leaving us behind when we, quite naturally, couldn't meet the impossible demand.

I believe most technology for accessibility is already possible, they are just not been installed because the designers doesn’t care, or they intentionally ignore. Like how lobbyists constantly trying to undermine the public transit plannings in North America, the biggest and most expensive accessibility system that could happen to a city, just because it makes the oil and car industries more money.

I would think it could be hard, being blind, to trust ride-share drivers when they say you've arrived at your destination, to know that is true, unless you are also using something such as gps on your phone to confirm.

I use GPS on my phone all the time and it works great! I can even use it on the buses now. Are use Google Maps to check out the bus stops and then I use a GPS app to actually mark a bus stop so that I know I'm nearer to the one I need to stop at. I absolutely love my new phone with my new GPS app!

This is the kind of stuff that doesn't get talked about in discussions about technology.

I know I'm late, but as a partially deaf person who gets constantly asked why I don't have hearing aids, I understand the help technology can provivde but i hope people don't see it as a fix all, or an excuse to not be fully accessible.

I couldn't feel completely comfortable in a digital environment, as it can be very easily manipulated. Cyber security and law is far far behind the curve

When did you get Elton John the 2nd..? RUclips has been having fun unsubscribing me... He's Handsome ❤ I struggled in school... I have strabismus and auditory processing issues. I was always thinking in highschool how cool would it be to turn my PC into a pad, writing stuff but converting everything into text and talk into text. I was constantly having people write notes in class and either I or my mom would convert it into print. So yeah! Now I have FND or Functional Neurological Disorder (had stroke like episode in Aug 2023) it has affected my left side. Can't drive anymore.

I will say Uber and Lyft need to fix that. I understand there are people who are allergic to dogs but they should have an option in the app to wear the driver can say they allow dogs in their car or not. Also It’s not legal to for a business to turn away someone who has a service dog. If you are driving for Uber or Lyft you are working for that company therefore your car is a company car so you legally can’t turn away or refuse someone who has a service dog. And yes you can report these people.

I'm not sure I would want to own a self driving car. The problem with self driving cars is that they're run by computer and computers have a tendency to crash, so how would I pull over the car to deal with the computer problem? Worse, what if the computer problem was so bad that I had a runaway car on my hands that would not stop no matter what I did?

Freeing for a lot of disabled people in general. Not just blind people.
