Import on the normal price then, the govt got tax on EVERYTHING so like you know there's a list of thing you can tax and govt gets its hand on much everything.
no.2 after that govt increases min wage for everyone & people "think " that its a good thing but the side effect = daily cost of living increases as companies got to pay their workers and some lose their jobs too. just FYI the minimum wage from 2021 to 2024 DOUBLED (more like from Rs9000 to Rs 20,000) and people that is blinded think it's a good thing not seeing that a apple that cost around Rs8 back then now cost Rs20.
no.3 Yeah some companies know much mauritians are dumb , am a mauritian too but goddamn they can't see when they are getting scammed. So basically some companies buy items off at normal price in bulk (aka with the discount etc) and resells at high price (specially in the tech industries) and people think that these so called high price tech are very good and when compared to abroad it would land on the "mid" kind categories. so there's that.
In summary, govt being "good" (in the short term ) and people gets blinded for 1yr and get fked after the 2-3yr "wth happened to the prices" then elections happens soon so the govt being "good" again and repeat.
Therefore long term, yup we are screwed. If you already have assets it's livable, but if you don't oh boi.
Hope you like the info and the inside thoughts of someone in the finance industry.
      Have a good day all.

Today is 21/01/2024 and if you go to the veggie market at Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill or Port Louis, you'll be even more so shoked at the price of carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. It's not just the cyclone but scraping off vital arable and grazing land to build futile concrete structures causing insecure food self-insufficiency, flooding and drought

Whenever the newspaper talk about how the prices of veggies or other food will go up, we mauritian all complain on facebook. And here when you're showing the truth about how expensive life is for us local, they get mad at you or say it's all because it's imported. Some mauritian doesn't really like it when tourists shows the reality of our island but I'll do the same when traveling. Import isn't an excuse for the prices we have here. Every week the prices are increasing. Not just imported products but even local veggies and fruits. Lindt chocolate used to be 70 rupees before, then after covid it became 170 rupees and now it's 220(that's like 4 or 5 pounds) whereas Madagascar is so close to us, they could have imported the chocolate from there as it's way cheaper or even vegetables. Madagascar has so many good fruits and vegetables. Better in quality also as it's not filled with pesticides.

Overall it looks to be about the same as the UK, perhaps a little more, hard to say.

The ingredients they replace natural sugar cane or beet root sugar with are called Sacharin and Sucralose. These are petroleum by products discovered in the 19th century which are now added to almost everything. I suspect because it is cheap to make and distribute. You need to grow sugar cane, harvest and process it, store it and ship it and distribute it and store in huge warehouses. Cost heaps. Almost all toothpaste contain sacharin, titanium salts, fluoride ( a deadly poison in large doses). There are warnings on toothpaste tubes to not swallow and if you do go to go an hospital emergency. Money talks, bullshit walks. Have fun.

Really sorry for that obnoxious person. I'm from Mauritius just like her and would recognize such stupidly rude brown-nosers (here we call em Chatwas) who can't even understand the Mauritian rupee depreciated 40% compared to 2014. Back then there was also freight charges but imported food commodities were not that pricey... milk, butter, cheese from New Zealand were still very affordable but now even the generic brands made in Egypt is out of budget. The current government is killing us
