  • Slewing Drive Worm Reduction Gearbox.
This application - large Satellite Dish, feed adjustment for a Television enterprise.
Additional reduction is provided by multiple sets of orbital gearing, between the
D.C. Motor and the Slewing component.
There is a Brake on that Motor.
The slewing component, can also be throught of as a thrust bearing, and contains
individual ball bearings with each separated from the next, by a plastic spacer.
These plastic spacers decrease the price/weight, and leave some room for a lubricant, not unlike
a conventional ball bearing assembly. Collectively, these spacers could be viewed as a "cage".
    So what happened here?
Well this unit was fitted in a vertical orientation, while the sealing facilities of it, would favour a
horizontal orientation. In this case, the problem was compounded by the environment - salt-laden air and water.
So the weather plus gravity, compromised the seal arrangement and siezed the unit, which literally twisted the shaft to the
slewing component (big reduction, rather than motor torque) - and then sheared the key. Result - satellite dish can no longer be adjusted.
    Ball diameter - 22mms.
Music - Down Pour and Thunderstorm by Kai Engel (name's Anton Fedchenkov)
