This is not a scientific test. It may not even be a good test. We just wanted to see how these generators would start after sitting dormant for over a year.

I agree that Honda engines tend to be pretty amazing, my Harmony lawn mower literally started on the 3rd pull when I bought it brand new and on the 1st or 2nd pull from then on - for 15 years! BUT here, it's not really a fair comparison to have had the Honda generator stored "dry" without fuel whereas the Generac WAS stored with fuel - for a *year.* That introduces a _number_ of variables, and in my opinion invalidates ANY and ALL conclusions about the quality, performance or reliability of these two engines...

I looked at the Gererac before buying the Honda. There are videos showing the Generac will not maintain its rated load output. The new Honda EU2200i is awsome.

Always add fresh gas before the first pull out of storage.
Also add a little octane boots helps too.

My Yamaha ALWAYS starts on ONE pull. There are a few diff ethanol free gasolines. Well worth the investment when you need your generator to start.

Do you consider to look at the Honda EU2200 sometime? 50% larger engine should show some differences.

the generac was at a clear disadvantage.

Of coarse any piece of equipment of moderate quality if never used will last forever. As long as it was properly stored, it will last. The real test is using them every day. My money is on the Honda, and it will be easier to get parts for too.

with the cost difference the Honda would have to last twice as long. Not saying it can’t, but needs to be factored in.

@@monolithtitan What sold me on the Honda was seeing one nearly 20 y.o. with over 2000 hrs and no repairs, ever. He just drained the carb when he put it away each time. Also, it's a lot harder to find any bad things said about the Honda, and they've been around for a long time. The Generac and other off brands look like they can be hit or miss. I've had too many bad experiences with the "Made in China" tag. At least with the Honda they were made in Japan for the longest time. They are made elsewhere now, Thailand I think, but I'd be willing to bet that Honda shipped all the tooling and molds there. Whereas, I'd be willing to bet that the others are build from the ground up in China. Like I said, the "Made in China" tag has left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

@@jimdent351 that’s fair and understandable. I don’t think the new Honda quiets even have carbs anymore just a direct inject which is even better. I bought a generac, it’s on its way as we speak. I try not to be biased based on my purchase. From the overall rating I’ve gathered off the net I think I’ll be ok. I would spring for the Honda but they really need to take it easy with the price point. Maybe I’ll feel different about it down the road.

@@monolithtitan I bought the EU2200 last year and it has a carb still. I think it's the bigger ones that are injected. Don't get me wrong I do like the Generac. I put a lot of hard thought into getting it over the Honda, and I'm sure it would have been just fine. In fact, I might just get one yet. I've been considering a larger generator capable of running the A/C on the camper, and it might just be a Generac that I go with. If I had to only have just one, however, my choice is the Honda. I would feel good, though, buying a Generac knowing that I have something to back me up, just in case. I'm a little paranoid that way. lol Which Generac model did you go with?

@@jimdent351 I got the iq3500. It actually arrived this morning and I spun it up and ran a few tests and so far it seems like a really good piece of machinery. I suppose only time will tell if it’s an overall good value but out of the box, with the tests I’ve ran so far, I’m very satisfied with it.

I have a question, I been seeing a lot of videos of these Hondas generators and all of them don’t turn on at the first pull. I just bought a used Honda eu2000i on pawn shop and it starts at the first pull it’s anything wrong with the carburetor that might be too accelerated?

I needed 5-6 pulls on my 2 years old Honda power lawnmower since day one new.
I -3 pulls for my 37 years old Brigg and Stratton Classic engine.
1-2 pulls for my other young 15 years old Brigg and Stratton Classic engine.
My worst one was my Kohler XT engine it requires 3-4 pulls on the first 2 years then 20-45 pulls after the 3rd year. After the 10 years I wiggled the choke plate several times while checking for gummed up or dirt but it was quite clean. I am puzzled.
Afterwards it starts right up only 1-2 pulls for the last 2years It may be too tight at the choke plate or linkage from the factory I almost threw it out to the trash.
All uses the same gas from the same gas container with the same gas stabilizer.

Hey that’s un fair the Honda switch was on longer before the first pull the fuel evaporated outa the carb on the generac as well as the Honda you needed to give it the same time for the fuel to refill the carb as the Honda did ... I’ve got both of those generators and the generac is right on beat with the Honda

Tim, so do I. After 5 years, the iQ2000 performs as well as the EU2000i powering lights and small appliances at my cabin. I only use premium non ethanol free fuel in all power equipment and follow a strict maintenance schedule.

You are supposed to slowly pull the rip cord 2-3X to get the oil moving and the gas line primed - Then give it a sharp yank and BOTH (as well as the cheaper brands) will ALL start on the first real pull - that being said HONDA makes the best engine by far ... but owning the Generac I can tell you it performs perfectly for my home use when the lights go out - I don't use it on a RV or camping -it's only for blackouts and it works perfectly.
