- On 14 October 1956, Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, took a life-altering decision. The Dalit icon decided to quit Hinduism and convert to Buddhism, along with close to 3,65,000 of his followers in Nagpur.
Six decades later, we look at the reasons behind Ambedkar’s decision to alter not just his own path but also the lives of a largely marginalised Dalit community.

Hinduism doesn't created the caste system, it's people who created it. In early times the caste system arised from the nature of people's work, but unfortunately this became worse & deep rooted by the upper caste discrimination towards them.And now this became a big social evil that needed to be eradicated, this can be eliminated to some extent by removing or give up of tags of religious/caste names like sharma, banerjee, rajput, kapoor, sheik,khan,reddy,rao, iyengar....etc, & already 3-4 lakh Kerala people left the caste/religion column empty in government certificate & it's time for us to follow.And I am brahmin, my grandfather & his brothers already gave up the caste tag when they were in college & now we just have village names as a surname & some of our cousins kept their surname as their father occupation like carpenter, teacher etc & we have all religions & castes in our family & iam a Indian first.

I wanna share something with you my fellow guys it been 3 years since i left my religion i was a rajput from kushwah gotra and when i was a child my elders had the proud to be a rajput even they were unemployed and still they are unemployed but still they had so much proud but my Parents always thought me to treat all the human beings as one but still i spent my childhood my elder cousins and their mind was filled with bullshit like they are rajput and they are royal blood and unfortunately i had little bit proud to even though i had many Dalits friends too but sometimes i feel that they are inferior when i become a adult i started to read holy scriptures of Hinduism like Bhagwad Geeta and i found there is nothing wrong in it but when i study manusmriti that was horrible experience to me to see that book, and I'm pursuing M.A. in history and found that there was a empire which was known as shunga empire and that was empire was worst than aurangzeb's empire he was staunch upper caste brahimin and he killed so many Buddhists even the great maratha empire you can see the conditions of daltis in marataha's empire not even this even Ram killed a dalits shambhu because he was worshiping and guru drona asked Eklavya his right hand's thumb.
But fortunately guys in 2017 i left hinduism and become an Apostate and i go everywhere Mosque, Gurudwara, Church, Buddha Temple and in Temples too and i found no discrimination among the normal people and the Vips except the Temples i think discrimination is in the veins of hinduism and hindus 🙏
My grandmother attended this conversion ceremony in my childhood she used tell me her nostalgia about this event my favorite memory of her that made strong impression on me is a song she used sing in her trembling voice

My grandparents attended this conversion ceremony at Nagpur. I lost my grandfather in 2007. Everytime my grandmother hears the name of our babasaheb tears start rolling her eyes. He is not a god but he is more than a god to us. He is everything to us.

At the time we converted to buddhism only babasaheb was literate from our community and now we are 3rd most literate community in India. Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar is the asset of India, he is greatest jewel of Indian intellectual tradition and the crown of thoughts which liberate mankind and provides justice to all. He is eternal visionary with vigorous intellect. He was an erudite and polymath. Though some with their Caste prejudice may hesitate to recognise his intellectual and political work and may be played down with their oppressive Ideological baggage, but those who are intellectually honest and speaks truth will never deny that Ambedkar is Indian ever greatest intellectual, visionary leader and maker of Modern India.
The 22 Vows ( 22 Pratigya ) of Buddha Dhamma by Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar, delivered in 1956:
1. मैं ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश में कोई विश्वास नहीं करूँगा और न ही मैं उनकी पूजा करूँगा
2. मैं राम और कृष्ण, जो भगवान के अवतार माने जाते हैं, में कोई आस्था नहीं रखूँगा और न ही मैं उनकी पूजा करूँगा
3. मैं गौरी, गणपति और हिन्दुओं के अन्य देवी-देवताओं में आस्था नहीं रखूँगा और न ही मैं उनकी पूजा करूँगा.
4. मैं भगवान के अवतार में विश्वास नहीं करता हूँ
5. मैं यह नहीं मानता और न कभी मानूंगा कि भगवान बुद्ध विष्णु के अवतार थे. मैं इसे पागलपन और झूठा प्रचार-प्रसार मानता हूँ
6. मैं श्रद्धा (श्राद्ध) में भाग नहीं लूँगा और न ही पिंड-दान दूँगा.
7. मैं बुद्ध के सिद्धांतों और उपदेशों का उल्लंघन करने वाले तरीके से कार्य नहीं करूँगा
8. मैं ब्राह्मणों द्वारा निष्पादित होने वाले किसी भी समारोह को स्वीकार नहीं करूँगा
9. मैं मनुष्य की समानता में विश्वास करता हूँ
10. मैं समानता स्थापित करने का प्रयास करूँगा
11. मैं बुद्ध के आष्टांगिक मार्ग का अनुशरण करूँगा
12. मैं बुद्ध द्वारा निर्धारित परमितों का पालन करूँगा.
13. मैं सभी जीवित प्राणियों के प्रति दया और प्यार भरी दयालुता रखूँगा तथा उनकी रक्षा करूँगा.
14. मैं चोरी नहीं करूँगा.
15. मैं झूठ नहीं बोलूँगा
16. मैं कामुक पापों को नहीं करूँगा.
17. मैं शराब, ड्रग्स जैसे मादक पदार्थों का सेवन नहीं करूँगा.
18. मैं महान आष्टांगिक मार्ग के पालन का प्रयास करूँगा एवं सहानुभूति और प्यार भरी दयालुता का दैनिक जीवन में अभ्यास करूँगा.
19. मैं हिंदू धर्म का त्याग करता हूँ जो मानवता के लिए हानिकारक है और उन्नति और मानवता के विकास में बाधक है क्योंकि यह असमानता पर आधारित है, और स्व-धर्मं के रूप में बौद्ध धर्म को अपनाता हूँ
20. मैं दृढ़ता के साथ यह विश्वास करता हूँ की बुद्ध का धम्म ही सच्चा धर्म है.
21. मुझे विश्वास है कि मैं फिर से जन्म ले रहा हूँ (इस परिवर्तन के द्वारा).
22. मैं गंभीरता एवं दृढ़ता के साथ घोषित करता हूँ कि मैं इसके (परिवर्तन के) बाद अपने जीवन का बुद्ध के सिद्धांतों व शिक्षाओं एवं उनके धम्म के अनुसार मार्गदर्शन करूँगा.

Good joke Gurinder Singh. He readed every religion but he got influenced from buddha and his teachings. He was knowing the discrimination in Sikhism by jatt sikhs with valmiki sikhs, majhabhi sikhs, ravidassia sikhs etc. In colonial periods majhabi were not given to enter the gurudwara.Sikh guru rejected caste but sikhs didn't reject it. So he converted to buddhism.

It is mentioned that Babasaheb has adopted a the principles of Fraternity Equality and liberty by borrowing them from French Revolution. But this is wrong. Babasaheb has clearly mentioned in his writings and speeches that he found Fraternity Equality and liberty have their roots in Buddhist philosophy. Secondly it is mentioned here that he embraced Buddhism on 15th October 1956. It is not correct. He embraced Buddhism on 14th October 1956 at Dikshabhoomi Nagpur.

On 13th October 1956 before the day of Buddhist Conversion Ceremony, Dr. Ambedkar was interviewed by an English newspaper called “Hitawada”.
Hitawada representive :- “Will the Neo-Buddhists follow traditional Buddhism or follow a religion that is in harmony with modern conditions?”
Dr. Ambedkar :- They will follow the religion that the Buddha taught himself. They will not engage themselves in the differences of Buddhism. Because that led to the creation of the Mahayana and Vajrayana or other similar sects. This is a type of a Navayana (New Vehicle) only.
Again after the day of Buddhist Conversion Ceremony, he was interviewed by well known Maharashtrian Novelist Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar at Sham Hotel, Nagpur.
Madkholkar said, “I think what you said yesterday will not be liked by the traditional Buddhist Scholar’s.”
Ambedkar replied, “I never say anything to be liked or unliked by anybody. I speak only what I think is right. That is why I made it very clear in the press conference that my Buddhism is different from both the Hinayana and Mahayana sects. If you like, call it Navayana.
Madkholkar asked, “Then why not call this sect Bhimayana?”
Ambedkar laughed and said, “If you want to call it that, you are free to call, but I won't say it. I'm a small man. I have not given the world any new ideas. All I know is that His Dharmachakra had been suspended in this country for the last thousand years, I had the luck of restarting it. You Hindus, because of your suicidal attitude, allowed Christianity and Islam to come to this country and grow. So much so that time to tear the country apart came. On the contrary, Buddhism, which is the most rational superior religion, emerged in this land, you have driven this Indian religion into exile. I brought that religion back to its home and I'm proud of that. You Hindus thought that, by declaring conversion, I have placed an axe on your religion, on culture and on the country. But now you know that my conversion is pure Indian and that's going to be the reason for the glory of Indian culture. On October of 1935, I announced the conversion. During that time you people abused me. But twenty years from now, you may have come to realize that, in regards of loyalty over India, I am nothing less than you people. Maybe I am more loyal than you. Because this country has given the philosophical gift to the whole world in the form of Buddhism, that you Hindus foolishly rejected. I donated it back to this country, I'm happy and proud of it.
In the introduction of the book “Buddha and His Dhamma” he wrote-
“The urge to write this book has a different origin. In 1951, the Editor of the Mahabodhi Society’s Journal of Calcutta asked me to write an article for the Vaishak Number. In that article I argued that the Buddha’s Religion was the only religion which a society awakened by science could accept, and without which it would perish. I also pointed out that for the modern world Buddhism makes a slow advance is due to the fact that its literature is so vast that no one can read the whole of it. That it has no such thing as a Bible, as the Christians have, is its greatest handicap. On the publication of this article, I recieved many calls, written and oral, to write such a book. It is in response to these calls that I have undertaken the task.”
He wrote the book so that the new Buddhist people can easily understand Buddhism.
The holy book “Buddha And His Dhamma” was written using Pali (Theravada) Buddhist literature, Sanskrit and Chinese (Mahayana) Buddhist literature.

Hence, he combined all the important teachings of both Hinayana (Theravada) and Mahayana.
His version of Buddhism is a combination of both Theravada and Mahayana. Apart from that the so called “Navayana” Buddhism has a socially engaged aspect to it. The believers are neither completely focused on Arhatship nor on Buddhahood, they are focused on how to eradicate the Dukkha that exists in the world. Nibbana to them is “enough control over passion to establish a kingdom of righteousness”.
People should be aware of the false information that is present on Wikipedia regarding Navayana Buddhism. Never expect completely authentic information on Wikipedia. It appears on Wikipedia page of Navayana Buddhism that it rejects doctrines of Renunciation and Monastic life, Karma, Rebirth, Meditation, Nibbana, Realms of Existence, Four Noble Truths - ideas found in the major traditions of Buddhism. These things are totally wrong. Dr. Ambedkar explained teachings of Karma, Rebirth, Meditation, Nibbana, Four Noble Truths, etc in the Buddhist Bible. He did not reject Renunciation of Buddha, he gave a different explanation about Buddha’s Mahabhinishkramana, he also explained Monastic Order (both of Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis) and the 227 Vinaya rules they follow. There is an All India level Buddhist Bhikkhu Sangha organisation of the monks of Navayana. They are ordained according to Theravadin manner. Dr. Ambedkar did not explain the Buddhist cosmology of 31 Realms of Existence, but he did explain how Buddha was approached by the Sahampati Brahma from the Brahma loka who appeared before Buddha after He achieved Enlightenment and the dialogue between them. Dr. Ambedkar also explained some discourses which Buddha gave to the Deva’s , Naga kings such as Nagaraja Kala, Nagaraja Muchalinda, and Yakkha Alavaka, etc
These facts are enough to prove that Ambedkar’s interpreted Buddhism is not different from Traditional Buddhism. It is a Socially Engaged Buddhism with all the important teachings of Hinayana (Theravada) and Mahayana.

To correct one big misconception. There is no caste system in Islam. No shia, no sunni. It is clear from Qur'an that we are all muslims .Sects in the religion is the thing these muslims made on their own. Prophet Muhammad stated in his farewell sermon, “O people. Your Lord is one and your father is one. (Adam) An Arab has no superiority over non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over Arab, also white has no superiority over black nor does black have any superiority over white, except by piety and righteousness.
