Mariah is the queen of layers and background vocals!! Really, you can tell in 5 seconds when is one of her songs just because of that❤
Trivia. This was the very first time Mariah worked with Jermaine Dupri. That day their connection was instant and they´re still best of friends along with Da Brat. The recording session was at her home studio and at that point Mariah was almost a prisoner at her own home. Da Brat convinced her to sneak out and Jermaine was left in the studio. They got in big trouble for that!

At 27:56 when you hear that cut. At that point there's supposed to be a belt. I guess they recorded it in another track cause in the final product there's that missing belt. Too bad your multitrack didn't have it hahaha ❤ still amazing content.

Thanks for analysing this song! It's one of my favourite Mariah Carey songs. I always wondered how they produced this track. It's interesting to hear each part in isolation and shows that less can definitely be more if you have the talent and know how to create something beautiful that touches people.
Dupri is one of my favourite producers - I like how he said in a recent interview that he always creates his songs just for the artist who is meant to sing it and it's tailor-made for them. Totally agree as when you hear a song you first think oh that's [insert music artist]'s song rather than that's Jermaine Dupri's song. Some other producers have their standard style so no matter who sings the song, you recognise the producer/production first rather than the vocal artist.
Mariah Carey (as one of the best singers of all time!) did a fantastic job as always but listening to the isolated vocals, I didn't realise how complex the vocals were - not just the vocal runs but also the change in textures from light to gritty and key changes. The background singers did an amazing job of adding more layers to Mariah's layers. I knew Kelly Price was one of the backing singers but thank you to the person in the comments that advised who the other singer was. Xscape also did a great job on the remix with Mariah, Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri.
If you are able to, it would be interesting to hear Honey (original or Bad Boy remix) and the iconic When You Believe (Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston) broken down.

Love this tune. Reminds me of Mily who was like a family friend but also kinda a big sister as my mom kinda took her in. She always played this. Yeah ya know what's coming. What were these? WAV? BUT, I must say, I think she’s using a harmonizer on the background vocals. Its a little too perfect.

I see where you’re coming from but it’s hard to deny those vids are out there. (If that’s what you’re referring to) It just goes to show that when you’re as good as Mariah is it requires SO much upkeep. We should all be more respectful of Mariah by acknowledging that although she may be from the heavens above she too is human. Which also means she feels emotions and it’s probably not good to focus on those points.
