  • Whatever you want call these things, they are easy to make and I don’t understand why they are so expensive to buy. They are mainly an exercise in sanding

    Wow some of that cherry has some incredible figure. I'm sure your kids cherish those boards, I'm doing the same thing with some walnut my grandparents have had in their backyard since the 40's, most of it I'm building guitars with but the rest will be charcuterie boards for the family.

      Thanks, they do love them. You’re building guitars? Wow, that’s beyond my skill set. I made a dulcimer from a kit several years ago. I love working with walnut, I’m sure your family will love those gifts. Happy New Years

    Hi Larry. Hope the ankle healed well and your back in the shop. Love these boards! I was wondering with your planer if you had that extra board in there to ensure flatness?

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching. Ankle is doing great, changed my lifestyle. As for the board in the planer. It was to prevent snipe on the ends of the boards. I usually try to keep the stock a little long so I just cut it off but didn’t have any stock to spare on these. That was a piece of butcher block my daughter gave me from some remodeling they did. It has since warped.
      Wishing you happy holidays. Larry

      @@thebobloblawshow8832 it’s easy to spend a ton of $$$ on big boy toys. I’ve been collecting and accumulating since 1973. My 1979 Sears table saw is on it’s last leg, the bearings are going out. Trying to decide what to replace it with. Do you have a table saw yet? If so, what did you go with?

      @@LSatch I’ve got a Craftsman. It’s aging out though. I’m looking at a new Magnum table saw. Magnum is KMS Tools signature brand, but I don’t think they are in the US. I would definitely consider a Saw Stop if they weren’t twice the price. Wait till the wife sees the new saw. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

    A great story about the wood source. I’ve made my first cheese/cracker & cutting boards. I’ve used mineral oil as you did. Do you see a need to wax them as well? Some do, seems some don’t.

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  2 года назад +1

      I think waxing wouldn’t hurt. Kinda like belt and suspenders. After the first use the wax will be gone, at least most of it. I told my girls to renew the oil once or twice a year depending on use. A bottle of food grade mineral oil at my Kroger is less the $3.00 and will last for years. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy holidays.

    Blessed children. I am wondering what you did to one of the boards with the wood burner. I thought it might be a branding tool but I only saw it on one board. (?) So nice ! What was the thickness of the boards once finished ?

    • @LSatch

    Hey, quick question. What keeps these cutting boards from warping and/or twisting with time?

    • @LSatch
      @LSatch  2 года назад

      There is no guarantee that they won’t. The key is starting with kiln dried wood or in the case here, air dried for 20+ years. The other is proper care. They should only be wash or cleaned with as little warm water as it takes to clean it. NEVER in the dishwasher! They are such an easy project you can make with just a drill, jig saw and sandpaper. I can’t believe the prices I people are getting for them. Hope this helps,
