Transference P1: Is the Kurzweil Forte, K2700 & PC4/7 a Montage or Kronos killer?

  • Well, does it matter? They are all great instruments, the Kurzweils does have some advantages. The Forte has 16 GB flash memory and some nice sound design tricks like modulating the sample start point. You can edit the Forte like a modular synth - limitless.
    In this video I showcase my library, transferred sounds from my PC to the Forte. In part 2 I show how to go about it and convert your own Ni Kontakt sounds.
    A part of my library sounds are now available through my Patreon account:

    We see plenty of the biggest stars / bands playing with Kronos, and K2000 series, but I’ve yet to see a single Forte on stage.
    Any opinions why / happy to be corrected..?
    I’ve only an old SP4, and gave up waiting for an affordable Forte to appear so put down $2000 (AUD) on Roland Fantom G8 that I’ve midi’ed to my old FA-07 to access its Supernatural sounds.

    I bought a Kurzweil PC4 this year. It has been sitting for months because every time I use it to design a patch from a blank initiated program, or just go through the presets the operating system corrupts and the machine must be turned off and back on. I lost the very first patch I created by this operating system. I spent months trying to design the perfect acoustic piano, but the string resonance control acts more like a filter than resonance. I bought 2 pedals and two expression pedals for it to have a soft piano pedal, but it doesn't sound like a soft piano. The half damper pedal has such a short range it is difficult to use. Please let me know if anyone else is sound designing from a blank with the PC4 and having system lockups. I have 16 other analog, digital, and workstation synths, plus a hundred other synths over the last 56 years of playing keyboards....NONE....ever had an operating system this corruptible. The display is so small and the fonts so small attempting to design a patch is a pain in the a**. I can't believe paying $2500.00 for keyboard gets me this!

    • @inside_joke
      @inside_joke  9 месяцев назад

      Sounds really annoying, in the Kurz Forte there is a 'hard reset option', tried that? Because of the cumulative nature of Kurz system, it has some quirks, but I don't recognize the misery you have with the PC4. Anyway, good luck and if the problems endure, I would not waste any more time!

      Next to the Kawai mp7se, that piano sound has got to be very apealing. Id take a kurzweil over the kronos just due to the kronos having the slowest start time
      I own a kawai mp7se though its heavy, its a very intuitive instrument and a joy to play and issues in my keybed have been non existent i have been considering making a switch from the mp7se to the pc4. Not sure if that would be a wise idea. The kawais SK line comes packed with good amounts of nice pianos i want the drawbars. I don’t think I’ll get the pc4 se pcs i wonder why the pc4se got rid of things??? But on the Kawai i can save power on states and put all my sound sets in order for each song i want to play. Can the kurzwel save power on states?

    • @Justin_collier
      @Justin_collier 8 месяцев назад

      I think you just got a bad board, every manufacturer has glitches, i even had to switch out my kawai mp7se because one day she wouldnt turn on out of nowhere but ive had my replacement now for a year and shes still going strong. Its prob the best stage piano ive owned, i had a korg sp300 so it was worth the upgrade for me, i havent looked back. Its so intuitive, has a hidden midi menu with 128 additional sounds that are more than usable, and leads you through a worship service with 0 problems. Im scared to try a kurzweil. Im too attached to RH3 action

      I bought a Yamaha DGX-670 since the Kurzweil, and the Yamaha is the best digital piano I have ever played. Good even sound across the 88. Great editing for dialing in what we each think is our perfect piano sound. Acceptable key weighted key action. The piano sample is so good, editing to extreme pianos like a soft felt ambient piano is very easy to accomplish. Effects are good and usable even for the deeper reverbs of the soft felt piano. I bought the whole package with stand and 3pedals. The sustain is half pedal and works like an acoustic, the soft pedal is the first soft pedal I have ever owned that sounds like a soft pedal should. A built-in audio recorder that functions great for professional solo piano recording at CD/16bit/44.1kHz. For the first time in my 55 years of playing piano and 35 years playing/owning all kinds of digital pianos I don't cringe when I play it. This digital is finally an instrument with the expressiveness of an acoustic piano. So now I own a Roland RD-2000, Kurzweil PC4 and the Yamaha DGX-670, all different actions so practicing on all of them keeps me better prepared for whatever stage piano I have to perform on. But the Yamaha is the only one I enjoy playing. @@Justin_collier

      @@inside_joke But seriously! I mean even the first Kronos already had an inbuilt 30 GB SSD which allowed streaming directly from there, later models had 60. And of course you could do exactly the same trick with using other libraries. Fact though is, whilst these are just samples, the Kronos has 9 Sound engines. Not just three like the Forte/2700. And I'd be indeed hard impressed if you'd manage to get the sounds of the virtual acoustic engine into the K. Let alone and MS-20, Polysix. Or alternatively reprogram those with vast. Which on my K2500XS. Whilst impressive, it's also pretty complicated. There have been geeks to program KB3, but that's not what everyone is capable of.

    • @robertvanderend6333
      @robertvanderend6333 Год назад +2

      @@torbenanschau6641 Seriously, SSD is not comparable to FLASH ram. Loading times are zero, and you have Seamless sound switching, for musicians a big thing. FLASH is crazy expensive, although getting more available now, like in the Nord Stage. Personally, the playing comfort with FLASH is so much better. Latency wise, the Kurz feels more direct and like a musical instrument. The Kurz needs only 1 sound engine (VAST), all is build around it. It goes much, much deeper than Kronos sys. For one, the VAST sample engine is comparable to Kontakt (sample startpoint modulation etc, multisample groups, random switches), that's why you can convert those libraries better. And the sound is way better, if you know what you are doing. The kronos emulations (MS-20 etc.) are nice synths of course, but feel like a gimmick. If you owned a Polysix you know it sounds way, way better. Yes, VAST is complicated and not for everyone, it's the same for modular synthesis or other open systems. But endusers can profit from other sounddesigners doing the hard work.

Let me say this subs to Inside_Joke pattern get the Rhodes and Grandeur. How he got the Grandeur to sound as good as the NI one is beyond me considering the size. I had to eq the NI one to give it body (I normally do that) and did add eq mainly bass on the Kurz its just sublime. Kurz is like a sports car until you activate its bells and whistle you can maybe feel a bit underwhelmed , with em on and it's NO Contest.
