- Audrey Munson was the most successful and famous artist model of the 1910s. She went on to star in silent films, and it was said her 'perfect form' adorned the skyline of the Panama-Pacific Exposition 90 times over.
She lived to be 104 years old, and yet despite her meteoric rise to stardom, most of her life was spent in an asylum.
This is her fascinating and tragic story.

Intro music: Lady fingers by Herb Alpert
I am a former art model - paintings, sculpture, photography. I am also the daughter of an artist - my father was a glassblower, so I grew up around art and learned a great deal. I graduated from college with a BA in German Language&Literature. Married, divorced (no want for children) and had to start again on my own, mid-life, I am now 56. I started modeling at age 28. My career lasted a dozen years until I could no longer physically keep up with the demanding poses. What a life! I can relate to many of Audrey's life experiences, ups and downs in love and mental health, These days I am a security officer in a prestigious art gallery. It joys me to continue being surrounded by that much creativity and beauty. Hopefully I won't live nearly as long as poor gal Audrey. She was a stunning beauty! Cheers!
I can still see her sculptures all around New York. I've read the book The Curse of Beauty: The Scandalous & Tragic Life of Audrey Munson, America's First Supermodel... it was a great read.
My father worked at the hospital she was in at the end of her life. Everyone there loved her.
Wow! That's so interesting!
The way you told Audrey’s story, I felt like I was there, feeling every single emotion, every single high and low, and every single tear that she cried in private.
We all have much to thank her for, and, yet, few actually do. She was definitely ahead of her time, and she was the first to liberate herself from the constraints of society. It’s a terrible shame that she was used by so many, then tossed aside the second that they were done with her.
It’s also disheartening to know that that she had been forgotten about for over 20 + years years inside of a mental asylum. I don’t understand how they could’ve kept her for more than 60 years! Was she being medicated all those years, was she going to therapy, or was she kept there against her will??
May she rest peacefully in her eternal slumber!
I'm really enjoying the history of long forgotten people. You have such a soothing voice too.
Wow you are an excellent storyteller! I am a old lady whose long enjoyed historical biographies so I feel experienced enough to spot a true passion and talent for the genre! I really appreciate your attention to detail. It’s clear you’ve seriously researched your subjects and have conveyed each of their stories factually yet compellingly. Each of these people we’re very important in their time and relevant still to history. You’ve done amazing work keep it up. I will look very forward to your future endeavors. Also love the photos you’ve added to each episode.
Dawn
Thank you for you acknowledgement , I’ve remembered ! The model was Evelyn Nesbit , if you haven’t already heard of the story , I think it would be of interest to you India
Well my goodness, I've had her close for 40 years without knowing it. I was gifted the coin in a round fitted silver frame with silver chain. I've never worn it as such but I cherish it greatly.
Thank you India! You can tell a story. RIP Audrey 💖
Such a beautiful, touching story, and so passionately narrated. Thank you for honoring the life of this beautiful woman.
Your historical presentations are very interesting, very unique. Also, your voice is perfect for historical narration.
Amazing story, beautifully told. Thank you India.
I agree!
Very exceptional storytelling and exquisite imagery!✨ As a former student myself who majored in world literature,I find it a rarity for any channel to successfully combine faith, literature arts, and accurate historical accounts of the Edwardian/Victorian Era. Thank you for sharing your wonderful sensibility and creativity. Keep the fascinating stories coming!💗 Xx Sincerely, new subscriber, Vanessa
Wow. I think there should be a film made of her life story. I would cast Irish actress Saiorse Ronan as Audrey.
What an incredible story! I'm so glad I stumbled across this - thank you, India Scarlett!
This MUST be made into a modern movie. Who would play Audrey? Hm!!!
Such a sad story.... but you told it well dear heart. These poor women who fell into the rivers of notoriety and were swept away with the cultures cruel current.....
Nicely done. I had never heard of her. I won't forget her.
Her life was filled with highest highs but more lows than anyone should be dealt. Being committed to an institution for decades is astounding. I can’t imagine all the pain and suffering she must have endured. She’s incredibly strong to have survived so much, I admire her strength and grit. I can’t imagine being locked up for decades and still come out the other side. Thank you for sharing her life story with us 🙏❤️
Your narration is perfect for storytelling. Thank you for these well researched essays on historical figures mostly fallen from sight.
This would make a great movie. I subscribed because it was really well done. Kudos to you
A good story and a cautionary tale. You can’t depend on your looks forever and one must make good choices in the meantime. Sad for her mental breakdown.
Your chanel has come up on my recommendations.
Thank you for sharing.
🙏🏿
Fascinating story. Thank you!
Again, your biographic context is supreme.
Thank you for this bio. It's interesting to find out what happened to Audrey who was so famous in her own time. Like so many women who rely on their beauty for success her story is sad. RIP Audrey.
Sad but well presented. The lovely narrators voice was a perfect match for the story.
Love these stories
Thank you for such in depth, passionate research!
Fabulous , live in the area she was born and died, subscribed, really interesting!
Just want to add that I have listened to all your video essays and look forward to more (subscribed). I relate very well to your musings. Thank you.
Thank you for your work. I enjoy antiques and collectibles, never realizing how often I’ve seen this lovely woman. It’s a tribute to be able to put a name to her significant impact on the historical art world.
Audrey had a sad life.😟love your channel.
Captivating! Love these stories, appreciate your research, & adore the storytelling. Please keep making them! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💕
Wonderful tragic story , your presenting style is excellent ! I just discovered your channel and have subscribed. Thank you for making this vid , I heard you mention Stanford white I think and I think if the same person was also involved in a huge scandal ,to do with a model around about this time ,or maybe later perhaps you know of this case ? Thanks again look forward to more of your work .
Yes! Stanford White was shot on the rooftop of his own building, Madison Square Garden in 1906, by the insane husband of Evelyn Nesbit, a girl he had taken advantage of and had an affair with a few years before. I find that case so interesting and am reading Evelyn's fascinating memoirs at the moment.
@@indiascarlett so you Evelyn Nesbit has already came to your attention. I was going to suggest her as a possible topic for you.
Fascinating telling India. On so many levels, not the least being, the Dollar value of this fine young Girls public nudity, for arts sake, and the damage trail.... no creature above on or below, comes even close to the magnificence of Womanhood. Tis good that perhaps Audrey gained peace and ease, in her last decade, with family connections saved.
Wonderful and beautifully told. Thank you xx
Fascinating Thank you 😊 So glad her last years were sweeter ❤️
Wonderful narration and an enjoyable video. Thank you!
What a very interesting story, thank you so much! Isn't it a shame that she has been forgotten, when her form is present in so many places. Thank you for your excellent commentary.
Thank you, and yes, it's a shame so many stars of the past have been forgotten.
Wow wow wow! Your content is amazing, so well done. The research is impeccable and production quality is second to none. I’m a new subscriber so I’ll be binge watching more of your videos. Wish you well. Sending love from Australia 👍✌️🙏❤️✨
I have so much in common with her, it's eerie. My dad is Irish, I'm an artist, a former model, and I have mental health issues (bipolar and anxiety). On top of all that, I was born on June 8th! I think that Gemini's definitely tend to be artistic, sensitive, and prone to mood swings.
I'm glad she was visited in the end.
Wow, I think the book I just read, "The Magnolia Palace" was inspired by this same model!
This is the second of your program's that I have watched. I have subsribed as they are so interesting and about people that I haven't heard of before. They are so well done! Great research and great photos and your story telling is done in such an interesting way. The only thing missing is a little background music maybe? Poor Audrey. To think that she lived more than 60 years in an insane assylum.
Oh, no…. I find most ‘background music’ detracting, especially since it’s often too loud. Narration only is a refreshing change.
No no! It's so refreshing to listen to a video without unnecessary music!
I agree, these stories are so interesting, loving this channel. I love the story of Truman Capote and the Swans too.
Great vid!
Poor girl, this is proof fortune tellers are dangerous...
Wow. Here’s to generational trauma!
Wonderful!
I would like a video about Maxine Elliot or Gladys Deacon. Thanks for your content.
They both sound like interesting figures! I'll definitely do a video on each in the future!
I love this video
Her mother should have never taken her there!! That is as curse right there!! Poor girl...
Thank you.
She lived till 125 I mean 105
That fortune was definitely a curse. The poor girl 😢
Not a curse, just a foresight of her future.
Horrifying!
I think Audrey and her mother returned to New York because Audrey was pregnant. I think she had the baby and it was adopted. Herman’s family found out and that’s why he ended the engagement. Lucky escape for Audrey as he was clearly a nutter. I think she did later have an abortion by her ‘ medical advisor’.
Sounds like she had undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Poor girl. What a tragic life story.
Her story is so similar to Evelyn Nesbit
Not how you’d wannu live out your life in the end, no way. So controlled and superficial care. So very sad.
👌💕
Tragic
That thumbnail photo surely looks like older Evelyn Nesbit.
Your voice is attractive and easy to listen to, but PLEASE, PLEASE lose the illiterate use of OFF OF...
Agree she IS a wonderful storyteller with a great voice, but just a little something I’ve noticed many RUclipsrs doing: pronouncing Aforementioned wrong. It should be like ‘uh-FORE-mentioned’ not ‘affer-mentioned’.
No. Too many ads.
FYI the term "gypsy" is a slur. The appropriate term is Roma or Romani.
Thank you for telling me!
also .times were different then. Women had NO RIGHTS
It is interesting to see what women were considered beautiful down through time. I don't think she was remotely pretty.
Really. She is not ugly.
Maybe she did not have enough hair extensions, tattoos and body piercings and collagen-filled sucker fish lips and plastic boobs to make it to today's beauty standards.
It is interesting how beauty standards change over time.
ojala hablara mas despacio, es difícil de entender para alguien cuyo idioma no es el ingles. usualmente no tengo problemas para entenderlo pero hablas muy rápido y el video no tiene subtítulos
She wasn't very pretty at ALL... :/
I don't usually like Women Narrators just on my own personal choice) as they can sound like Scratching nails on a chalk board 💅📋😂But you have a Lovely English Soothing voice 💆
