  • Audrey Munson was the most successful and famous artist model of the 1910s. She went on to star in silent films, and it was said her 'perfect form' adorned the skyline of the Panama-Pacific Exposition 90 times over.
She lived to be 104 years old, and yet despite her meteoric rise to stardom, most of her life was spent in an asylum.
This is her fascinating and tragic story.

I am a former art model - paintings, sculpture, photography. I am also the daughter of an artist - my father was a glassblower, so I grew up around art and learned a great deal. I graduated from college with a BA in German Language&Literature. Married, divorced (no want for children) and had to start again on my own, mid-life, I am now 56. I started modeling at age 28. My career lasted a dozen years until I could no longer physically keep up with the demanding poses. What a life! I can relate to many of Audrey's life experiences, ups and downs in love and mental health, These days I am a security officer in a prestigious art gallery. It joys me to continue being surrounded by that much creativity and beauty. Hopefully I won't live nearly as long as poor gal Audrey. She was a stunning beauty! Cheers!

I can still see her sculptures all around New York. I've read the book The Curse of Beauty: The Scandalous & Tragic Life of Audrey Munson, America's First Supermodel... it was a great read.

The way you told Audrey’s story, I felt like I was there, feeling every single emotion, every single high and low, and every single tear that she cried in private.
We all have much to thank her for, and, yet, few actually do. She was definitely ahead of her time, and she was the first to liberate herself from the constraints of society. It’s a terrible shame that she was used by so many, then tossed aside the second that they were done with her.
It’s also disheartening to know that that she had been forgotten about for over 20 + years years inside of a mental asylum. I don’t understand how they could’ve kept her for more than 60 years! Was she being medicated all those years, was she going to therapy, or was she kept there against her will??
May she rest peacefully in her eternal slumber!

Her life was filled with highest highs but more lows than anyone should be dealt. Being committed to an institution for decades is astounding. I can’t imagine all the pain and suffering she must have endured. She’s incredibly strong to have survived so much, I admire her strength and grit. I can’t imagine being locked up for decades and still come out the other side. Thank you for sharing her life story with us 🙏❤️

Wonderful tragic story , your presenting style is excellent ! I just discovered your channel and have subscribed. Thank you for making this vid , I heard you mention Stanford white I think and I think if the same person was also involved in a huge scandal ,to do with a model around about this time ,or maybe later perhaps you know of this case ? Thanks again look forward to more of your work .

Yes! Stanford White was shot on the rooftop of his own building, Madison Square Garden in 1906, by the insane husband of Evelyn Nesbit, a girl he had taken advantage of and had an affair with a few years before. I find that case so interesting and am reading Evelyn's fascinating memoirs at the moment.

Fascinating telling India. On so many levels, not the least being, the Dollar value of this fine young Girls public nudity, for arts sake, and the damage trail.... no creature above on or below, comes even close to the magnificence of Womanhood. Tis good that perhaps Audrey gained peace and ease, in her last decade, with family connections saved.

Great research and great photos and your story telling is done in such an interesting way. The only thing missing is a little background music maybe? Poor Audrey. I think Audrey and her mother returned to New York because Audrey was pregnant. I think she had the baby and it was adopted. Herman’s family found out and that’s why he ended the engagement. Lucky escape for Audrey as he was clearly a nutter. I think she did later have an abortion by her ‘ medical advisor’.
