- A while ago I came across a collection of hauntingly beautiful photos of an actress, May de Sousa. Her Wikipedia page revealed some fascinating details of her life, enough to pique my interest, but I was desperate to know more about this forgotten celebrity, and at first there wasn't much to go on.
Over the course of a few weeks I read hundreds of articles in digital newspaper archives, and found old records, documenting her life from the late 1890s up until her retirement from the stage in the beginning of the 1920s.
I really enjoyed the research process for this video, and it is possibly my favourite I have made yet!
Thank you for watching, leave a like if you enjoyed this and subscribe for more history!
Until next time!

How terribly sad! What a beautiful woman she was!!
Beautifully told.❤
Thank you🌷
I always enjoy your artistic, in-depth biography videos, thank you for this effort.
Thank you!

😊great video, but back in the olden days they had wigs ,makeup 💄 corsets my Grandmother told me 😊
Died at 66. I know things have changed since then but we really do need to have better support systems for older people.
yes, that's what I thought while making this.
How beautiful all those women were without the fake lashes, fake nails, sticky glossy lips, the young women today think are beautiful.
If these accoutrements had been available then woman would have used them. In fact, they did use a not inconsiderable amount of makeup at the time.
Makeup and paint make you what you ain't.
It amazes me how the meeting and interaction of this one man destroyed her life. She seemed to be doing well for herself until him.
How about that! May was from here, Chicago, and used to belong to my parish of Holy Name! I'm honored.
I believe May de Sousa, like Evelyn Nesbit, was another paramour of Stanford White (see the book "Stanny" from 1989). But I don't blame the girls. She was probably somewhat impoverished, and he had money.
I'm reading that book right now, it's very interesting, i hadn't read about May. I don't blame the girls either, it's sad that this kind of thing still happens today.
Stanford was about as bipolar as one can be and still be walking out on the street. His architecture was fabulous as were his….”appetites.” Who did Stanford *not* bed?!
is there enough on anna held to do a vid on her too? i really love her photos
I might do one on Anna! I love her photos!
@@indiascarlett yay!! fingers crossed, i love hearing about these historical events and these vids are great,
Hi - I tried to post this comment earlier, but I think it was sequestered by RUclips because I embedded links to a podcast episode about Miss De Sousa.
Over the last year I’ve conducted extensive research into May De Sousa’s life. Would it be possible to inquire about a few of your sources? Your video contains several pictures of May that I've never seen (some of which appear to have come from ‘The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News’, which can be tricky to find in digital format). I can post the time indexes of the pictures in the comments. Excellent work, btw.
Apologies for the late reply I've only just seen this comment. My sources were all online newspaper archives. I used the british newspaper archive, which has many extensive articles on May, and the California digital newspaper collection as well as New York state historic newspapers. Good luck with your research!
Poor May died across the street from where I now live.
Raymond Grant was not married to May. The May de Sousa he married was a cousin on her dad's side who happened to have the same name.
Really? Are you are relative? Maybe the papers got it wrong, as some of them even used May's photo and referred to her as an actress.
