I still use a pair of B&W DM580 tower speakers. They are from 1989, but still sound amazing! The buildquality on them is really good! Before china you had japan, they made good and great products they also made like 60 % of all audio products. Just stop with nonsense please.
"Bowers and Wilkins" changed to B&W in 1970 after Wilkins parted from the company after the first year. Wilkins was merely a business man who had nothing to do with the design or much of anything else. It was John Bowers ran the show as president and head designer for several decades. Bowers is now parted but he never intended that B&W should go back to using the original name they stopped using 50 years ago.
For all those who are knocking these speakers, don't forget that they were budget speakers when new in mid 1990's. Sure the cabs are thin and the x- overs cheap but the drivers are pretty good. I used to have a pair, sounded great for the price. You can pick them up now for £50 and as such they are a massive bargain. I would take the x- overs out of the cab and fix it to the back of the box, put some cheap bitchumin pads, of the type used for sound deadening on car panels on the inside surfaces of the box and on the backs of the magnets and the legs of the bass drivers frame. Make an MDF or wood brace to go across from one inside surface of the box to the other, just to stiffen it up. Total cost of improvements - maybe £5 for the sound deadening panels and a scrap bit of MDF for a brace. Better than most new speakers up to say £250.

That solid metal ring around the mid/woofer is made of magnesium. Probably the last entry level B&W series made in the UK, had the dm602,601,center chanel and a asw sub about 15 years ago sounded great can handle serious volume! lets see some late model B&W import internals lol .
My set of B&W DM303, made in March of 2002, were made in England. I say, those were probably truly the last product before production moved to China on the entry level products. Mine are decidedly less robust than these, being probably the most entry-level product B&W ever produced. The woofer frames and front panels are plastic, but again, that’s less likely to ring than metal. Tweeters are quite robust, being the 1 inch metal domes with the nautilus tube thing on the back. Sides of the box are MDF, and the back is extremely thick particle board. They have the “flow port” on the back, but they are not bi-wired. Also of note, the woofer cones are black “woven glass fibre” instead of the yellow Kevlar. I think the crossover on mine looks similar to the one in these.
Very useful , if tweeter not working , any ideas how to check if its cross over or the tweeters? The rest of speaker works fine still , thanks , any simple test? I m no expert but have multimeter .
This is an extremely cheap and simple crossover, one might even call it "primitive". Very surprising considering the nice quality of the cabinet and drivers, the woofer with its cast basket and large magnet must be rather expensive to manufacture.
Yes, the wiring is not ideal, thin cables without soldering to the speaker. The crossover seems to be cheap too. The walls could be thicker. But the basket of the mid/bass seems to be good enough, not the thin sheet steel
@@dotita1 totally agree. MDF surprisingly thin. Crossover using basic components and spade connectors to the drivers. Mid Bass driver looks reasonable. Much improvement could be had by focusing on those areas. Not sure what these retailed for? Like many modern products these days, sold on name rather than true talent of the product.
@@a0r0a7 i think these speakers were from 1997? I think that's when i bought mine. Then from these i jumped to the s3's which were also nice. I still have the 604 s3's in beautiful condition just stored away.
Perfect time for new Electrolytic Caps, After 10-15 years they change values, which changes the crossover points and could end up sending bass to the tweeter destroying it!
Hi. I can see that the visible cap is 4u7F, but can anyone tell me the value of the covered one, please? And, why are Electrolytics used instead of Polyester? Thanks :-)
I’ve got a pair of DM3s from the 60s and DM2As from the 70s, crossovers are so much better quality as are the cabinets and drivers. It’s a shame how modern stuff is so poorly built. Wasn’t long ago B&W were known for quality, it seems they are really looking to build speakers to a cheap level and rely on the name they once had.
Mate Rusendic - They can be picked up very cheaply these days (£50/$55) and the drivers are good quality for what they cost when new. Massive bargain at that kind of money, even up to £100 is still good. The beat speaker from that era though is the Heybrook HB1, if you see these cheap grab them quick, any audiophile will tell you how fab they were and still are. I really regret selling mine, better than the £600 Kef I have now in many ways !
I've always been a fan of the 800 series' sound and of course the build quality. Not sure what these in this video would retail for, but based on my impression of the build, they better not be more than $400/pair. Cabinet doesn't even have any internal bracing, and as others have already said, the wiring and components used in the crossover look cheap. I think there are many other newer brands nowadays that would sound better, have better construction, and cost less. From what I can see, the only thing quality about these are the drivers.
Good attention to detail aesthetically. Look inside though and it is built to price. That crossover is shockingly made and cheap. The box is horrendous. Why the huge slot hole in the front covered by plastic..
It is made too many not so good speakers! It doesn't help if you have good bass / nidrange to treble if you don't have good crossover. The factory does not spend much time on the crossover and then it does not help how good speakers you put in. the crossover in many speakers is not so good! the crossover must be carefully matched to the speaker
That crossover is cheap. Both capacitors are electrolythic, which is the worst possible type of cap for a crossover. But it's the cheapest one, of course. Coil placement on the PCB is also very bad, coils will be affecting each other. Thanks for the video!
I used to think the same thing, but I have ran into a couple of tweeters (both vintage horns) that sound a little smoother and warmer with electrolytic.
@@edjackson4389 yeah well, my opinion is that HiFi should be about being true to the source. That's why I don't use electrolytic caps in tweeter section of my crossovers and why I don't use lamp amps.

Hi! The video is great! But: the midbass driver and the tweeter are great... The cheap plastic front plate, the cheap wires and low quality electric caps and plastic screwed terminals not the best at a B&W loudspeaker. I like older pieces in the brand...modern new series sucks.
I got the first revision of these and boy are they shit. The bass drivers are excellent for a small near-field subwoofer, hence why I switched them for eachother. The treble? Well better have these 10 meters away from you or they cut your ears like a laser. Sounds good for half a minute before you get tired of it and turn that shit off.
