Yes I agree you are very inspiring. I have to tell you I am a total failure when it comes to growing anything but flowers. However, this year I am determined to try growing veggies. Also, my homesteader bestie has been guiding me to start practicing homesteading techniques before we jump into that lifestyle. So I have started to order some things and am going to try some of your ideas and recipes. I'm determined and with God's help and blessing, I should be able to get it like others have. Can't wait to find a property of our own (hubby and me and son and pup) to get growing a garden. Thank you for being so honest in your approach and keeping Jesus 1st in all you do. You are a blessing and I am learning lots....even at 58 years of age! Hugs and God bless you!

STARRY !!!! OMG !!! I DID IT !!!! My better half made me a solar dehydrator , almost the same size as yours and it worked ! We now have some dried celery for this winter . I'm so proud of us . We grew our own veggies and they did pretty good . some better than others and the celery was perfect . I just want to say Thank You . Every year we're doing a little better with the garden and storing away for winter . Thanks again ! xoxo

Love these older videos (as well as new ones!) Starry. I've got 4 electric dehydrators for the big summer harvesting crush but being in arid Eastern Washington it would make sense to have a Mr. Hilder-style dehydrator too. No BTE garden here so my one-time growing celery was delicious...what little the humans got of it. The slugs made a feast of it. Apparently I've been wasting resources blanching celery before dehydrating it, I'll be cutting out that step now thank you! Have a great week!

I love dehydrated celery! drying it intensifies the flavor somehow. I think it adds more flavor than fresh celery to soups, stews, and hotdishes. Here in AZ it's so dry that all we have to do with the celery leaves (and other herbs too) is just lay them on the table on a paper towel. In a couple hours they're nice and crispy.

Starry! I have one of those old fashioned colanders as you call them. I saved it from my mom's stuff when she died. I never thought about using it with the celery leaves. Kudos to the mister for making the dehydrator for you. I really like the design of the smaller one you showed us. I'd vote for a bigger version of that since its more enclosed and would protect the food more from insects and birds. 4 days to dry huh? I'm in SE TN so with the humidity here would probably take longer. I do have the All American Sun oven but like you said not much room. Great video on a must have skill.

I just found you a couple weeks ago . . love you!! Learning so much and we are trying to be more resourceful and trying the BTE garden, this our first year! We've always canned, freeze and use the (electric) dehydrator but we're going to make one of your solar ones!! Thank you so so much for all of your information. We're in Michigan so definitely our earth is different but we're going to be so blessed I can feel it already! Thank you so much Starry!!

Just a lot of really great ideas and inspiration for me in this video! And I love the music and always love the scriptures at the end of the video. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach what you have learned!!!

Lol! My grandmother did have the very same colander set up which she used for canning. Although celery is a staple for me I never considered growing it because of things my mother had said. She tried to grow it when I was a child and said it was too difficult because you had to use tile tubes for it to grow tall and it never worked for her. I suppose I had always taken her word for it therefore I never tried. But this next year because I do luv celery so, the promise to myself I make is it will be in my own garden. Really enjoyed this video. I have dried products on screens outdoors for years, but I surely liked the one that the Mister made for you. Thank you for sharing.

Great video. And such enthusiasm that it rubs off on the watcher. The number of times I’ve thrown surplus celery, especially the leaves onto the compost heap, I could’ve been doing this instead. And the way things are going, we will not be able to use our fancy electrical appliances and gadgets.

Thank you so much for the video, I'm getting the materials for this one next week. I can even use it inside in the winter too! Hair dryer or fan in winter, and sunshine in summer! Look up here on RUclips, free power from an alternator. Bunches of videos. 1 alternator produces 90amps of DC. That translates into bunches of AC. A typical 1 bedroom apartment uses about 90-120 amps. That's 15amp circuits is 6 rooms or 20 amp circuits is 4.5 rooms. Free electrical power.

I wild harvest weeds and dry them and then powder them in my Vitamix....I store the plant material in quart jars too! The weeds are high in vitamins and minerals and are not genetically modified like some veggies are. I can trust the weeds I harvest. I also dehydrate veggies too.. I will make a larger dehydrator to use as the ones I already have are too small to handle my volume. This is great idea but plan to use square fans to move the air as the rainy weather right now is not conducive to drying.

Have you tried the HERC Oven for off-grid dehydrating inside your home, 24/7, 365... And bake/cook the same as your conventional oven powered by tea light candles!

It will dehydrate faster if you take your vegie back during the night cause it will absorb moisture, especially the morning dew.

I prefer a dehydrator that has the food in the dark, where venting dries the produce. I am not sure how the rays of the sun affect the quality of what is being dried.

How are you chopping the celery without eating half of it!! You have inspired me to try growing some myself. I have 20 good sprouts so far. Wish me luck.

If it took you more than a day to dehydrate, how do you prevent the wind from blowing it away or critters going after it? Do you bring it inside for the evenings?

thank you I learned a lot. I have a few questions. Do you vacuum seal your jars of dehydrated food? How do you keep bugs (ants flies etc) out of your outdoor dehydrator? What did you use for the bottom (the part you laid the celery on?

I have a question why Do you separate the stalks from leaves for storage? Do they have varied uses?
