Yes I agree you are very inspiring. I have to tell you I am a total failure when it comes to growing anything but flowers. However, this year I am determined to try growing veggies. Also, my homesteader bestie has been guiding me to start practicing homesteading techniques before we jump into that lifestyle. So I have started to order some things and am going to try some of your ideas and recipes. I'm determined and with God's help and blessing, I should be able to get it like others have. Can't wait to find a property of our own (hubby and me and son and pup) to get growing a garden. Thank you for being so honest in your approach and keeping Jesus 1st in all you do. You are a blessing and I am learning lots....even at 58 years of age! Hugs and God bless you!

STARRY !!!! OMG !!! I DID IT !!!! My better half made me a solar dehydrator , almost the same size as yours and it worked ! We now have some dried celery for this winter . I'm so proud of us . We grew our own veggies and they did pretty good . some better than others and the celery was perfect . I just want to say Thank You . Every year we're doing a little better with the garden and storing away for winter . Thanks again ! xoxo

Love these older videos (as well as new ones!) Starry. I've got 4 electric dehydrators for the big summer harvesting crush but being in arid Eastern Washington it would make sense to have a Mr. Hilder-style dehydrator too. No BTE garden here so my one-time growing celery was delicious...what little the humans got of it. The slugs made a feast of it. Apparently I've been wasting resources blanching celery before dehydrating it, I'll be cutting out that step now thank you! Have a great week!

We've always canned, freeze and use the (electric) dehydrator but we're going to make one of your solar ones!! Thank you so so much for all of your information. We're in Michigan so definitely our earth is different but we're going to be so blessed I can feel it already! Thank you so much Starry!!

Starry! I have one of those old fashioned colanders as you call them. I saved it from my mom's stuff when she died. I never thought about using it with the celery leaves. Kudos to the mister for making the dehydrator for you. I really like the design of the smaller one you showed us. I'd vote for a bigger version of that since its more enclosed and would protect the food more from insects and birds. 4 days to dry huh? I'm in SE TN so with the humidity here would probably take longer. I do have the All American Sun oven but like you said not much room. Great video on a must have skill.

Lol! My grandmother did have the very same colander set up which she used for canning. Although celery is a staple for me I never considered growing it because of things my mother had said. She tried to grow it when I was a child and said it was too difficult because you had to use tile tubes for it to grow tall and it never worked for her. I suppose I had always taken her word for it therefore I never tried. But this next year because I do luv celery so, the promise to myself I make is it will be in my own garden. Really enjoyed this video. I have dried products on screens outdoors for years, but I surely liked the one that the Mister made for you. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much for the video, I'm getting the materials for this one next week. I can even use it inside in the winter too! Hair dryer or fan in winter, and sunshine in summer! LOL I just love a "machine" that does double duty! Bless, Sheila

I love dehydrated celery! drying it intensifies the flavor somehow. I think it adds more flavor than fresh celery to soups, stews, and hotdishes. Here in AZ it's so dry that all we have to do with the celery leaves (and other herbs too) is just lay them on the table on a paper towel. In a couple hours they're nice and crispy.

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  9 лет назад +1

Great video. And such enthusiasm that it rubs off on the watcher. The number of times I’ve thrown surplus celery, especially the leaves onto the compost heap, I could’ve been doing this instead. And the way things are going, we will not be able to use our fancy electrical appliances and gadgets.

starry, I did celery like that without blanching, and it is awful! it stays tough and doesn't rehydrate...maybe homegrown works better but I thought I would let you know that blanching before dehydrating from now on for me...PS...LOVE the solar dehydrator! thanks for sharing as usual =)

We are actually more towards the border towards Montana..Bonners Ferry moyie Springs Porthill are neighbors...we live right on the side of the Seilkirk mountains which im sure you can see from the video!! We love it and wil Never go back to Wisconsin...(sorry wisco:)) We had the shell put up but thats it. ALOT of labor to finish it off..man lots of labor! We had built a log home in LCD outside of Woodruff about 7 years ago all by hand...we did EVERYthing..from the building to the electrical ( had hydro,) the plumbing, shower building...you name it. so from that project we learned well!! We still have more to do on this homestead but we are busy living life and enjoying. TOO MUCH fun!!! Hope all is well with you!! God bless you to and so glad you found us in t his big world!!!

Look up here on RUclips, free power from an alternator. Bunches of videos. 1 alternator produces 90amps of DC. That translates into bunches of AC. A typical 1 bedroom apartment uses about 90-120 amps. That's 15amp circuits is 6 rooms or 20 amp circuits is 4.5 rooms. Free electrical power.

How are you chopping the celery without eating half of it!! You have inspired me to try growing some myself. I have 20 good sprouts so far. Wish me luck.

thank you I learned a lot. I have a few questions. Do you vacuum seal your jars of dehydrated food? How do you keep bugs (ants flies etc) out of your outdoor dehydrator? What did you use for the bottom (the part you laid the celery on?

Hey Starry; My wife saw your canning video and were Impressed with your caned butter. The only problem is that She would like to know how to can butter. if you have a video on this can you tell us where? We have tried to find it but have not been able to. If you have not made the video could you please do so. We both enjoy your videos especially the cow chips ! We both had a good laugh , thanks , and keep up the good work! Also the wife wants to know if you have a cook book. If so where can we get a copy? Thanks again. John and Lu.

She has a video. Go to her channel, that will be only her videos showing. If unsure how to do this type in Starry Hilder channel in the search box and you'll get there. Click on the videos word at top and scroll way down to 8 months ago and you'll see Canning Butter : off grid kitchen. Hope this helps you

hi...when you put your dehydrated products in a jar, do you vacuum it? If not, Is there any dehydrated foods that need to be vacuumed? I love your new dehydrator...I'm gona get my hubby busy...lol
I do have one in the house I dehydrate frozen vegies or canned fruit even eggs but I put them in a paper bag, then in a vacuum bag...For single-family portions. Then I put them all in a food grade bucket. I'm not too good at the garden yet...didn't do good at all this year. Thanks for the inspiration...😁

+Donna Reeves Well your welcome for the inspiration. I dont vacuum seal my dehydrated veggies BUT I do put them in a ball jar with a sealed lid and they keep well!! I use them quite often so its not for long long term storage.. I have had some dehydrated veggies for three years in a jar and are ok....others might not think thats to good..but it has worked for us!!

+Starry Hilder Thanks so much...The ones I vacuum in bags are for long storage, and doesn't cost much to do it this way. But herbs I would keep in a jar...not that I've planted any yet but im getting there. Trying to do as much as I can to be ready for SHTF so for now, its frozen vegies. Next project...Solar. 😁. A small set up for now...so I'll be watching you. Thanks!

This is my 2nd time watching - finally got what I need to make dehydrator :o) But I had a question...what do you use the ground celery leaves for? Do you use it if you just want celery flavor, like garlic powder? I can't think of anything that needs the flavor without the actual celery, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks - have a blessed day!
