I also owned the 350LC (a black one), which I bought new in 1982. It was a rapid wee bike providing it was kept within its narrow (5-7k) powerband. I liked it, but only kept it for a few months, as it drank fuel like there was no tomorrow and the finish on the wheel rims and matt exhausts didn't fair to well on our UK winter roads! What a day guys queued in the wet and cold seen some fabulous bikes found no spares for my project so a bit disappointed there . Probably the first and last time and left just as it was starting to dry up I think maybe move it to earlier in the year 😉I'll just watch your coverage in future although if you want a project to play with there were some good examples there to buy .all I bought was a small oil can not even a drink or a bite to eat 😂 with those road works near bye I'll bet getting out would perhaps have been painful later too I did think that to just look around the auction would cost a minimum of £10 was a bit rich so didn't bother with that .😏👍
@crumblymal8479 Yep, we got wet waiting to go in. Carol, being sensible, had her jacket, I didn't! Food & drink were really expensive there, and the coffee in the restaurant upstairs tasted b/awful! Sorry we didn't spot you walking around. We were a bit shocked at the cost to enter the auction. It was £5.00 for both of us last time. We did pay the £10.00 each to enter. We will have a separate vid next weekend of that. We are hoping we will get enough views through Google ad revenue to pay us back.
The Honda CX was affectionately known as the 'plastic maggot', because it arguably wasn't a good-looking bike, compared to other middle-weights at the time. The turbo version was available firstly as a 500. It suffered a lot from turbo-lag, which resulted in Honda uping the cubes to 650. Nevertheless, the standard bike was a very competent and reliable commuter/touring bike back in the '80s. I am, however, biased, as I bought a CX500A new back in 1981 and rode it on a solo 3-week trip from my home in Northern Ireland down to the French Riviera and it never missed a beat. Still have its topbox taking pride-of-place in my garage, adorned with stickers of the areas visited. Thanks for the video and a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
That trip on the CX sounded amazing. I'm sure you have great memories of the trip. Yes it's been pointed out they had the turbo on the 500 before upping the CC. I actually like the looks of the bike, the quirky engine layout makes it stand out. Thanks for watching
I have a 1982 CX500 Custom I bought in 84 from my brother. Took him and a passenger across Canada and back, and my wife and I from New Brunswick to New York and back without a hiccup. Needs some TLC now. Popular delivery bike in London in the 80's. Cheers
Thanks for the fantastic video, wish I could have been there. What an amazing selection of beautiful machines. 😊 As I mentioned in my latest video, and as others have commented, the CX500 was supposedly called The Plastic Maggot because of all the plastic on it and because it wasn’t deemed awfully attractive when it was first seen in the 1970s. To be fair, I think it’s actually aged quite well! 🏍️🏍️👍
@3Phils Thanks. I've been a little surprised at the interest in this video. I do think the CX500 & 650 have aged well. That unusual engine configuration sets a certain style to the bike. I'm not sure they fitted enough 'Turbo' badges though 🤔
And I turned 60 this year! Our philosophy is keep doing the things you want to do while you are able. Thanks for watching, even if it's only our Stafford show videos. (we have the auction vid coming up next Saturday from the Bonhams auction at Stafford)
Really enjoyed that, thank you 😊 Tom Cruise actually rode a GPz900R in the original Top Gun, now I know the bike was gorgeous but I'd rather have ridden Kelly Mcguiness 😅
@davidreed6817 Thanks, that's good to hear. You may be surprised, but you're not the first, or even the second comment to put me straight on the Top Cruise bike. 😆
Phil Holme works full time restoring AR's for a living, his attention to detail is incredible, I had a red AR80 which I wish I'd never sold, I've got no chance of ever finding it though because I can't for the life of me remember the reg and I've no photos of it. To me very pretty super light bikes. A tad on the small side for you Richard 😊
Thank you both so much for another excellent video. If the Stafford Show has a problem , its that there are so many great bikes to see and as I believe you said how on earth are they all so immaculate. Its probably never going to happen but the Barber bike museum USA is on my bucket list to visit as they have so many bikes but the Stafford Show must be a smaller version of it. Thanks again.
The great thing about the Stafford Show is it allows so many privately owned bikes to be shown together. These have been fettled and restored by individuals in their garages and sheds. It's an all consuming passion and I'm glad these bikes get shown together in public. We are lucky here in central England. we have the National Motorcycle Museum only 30 minutes away. That contains a massive treasure trove of bikes produced in this country for the last 125 years. Thanks for watching our little channel and this vid
These bikes bring back a lot of good memories and smiles. I heard the CX 650 got the nickname because the fairing was made from ABS plastiic instead of GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) sometimes referring as fiberglass. Great video and very popular too.
Quite a few theories on the CX650 & 500's nickname, I actually like the bike and the unusual engine configuration. I think many older riders feel connected to many of the 70s to 90s machines, hence the popularity and views here on RUclips. I still find it very difficult to understand why some videos like this take off in views??
@@Banditmanuk You both do a great job, teamwork 👍 My buddy Roy has 1983 CX650 fitted with a new shock and if the weather holds he promised I could ride it.

Just as a Cx650e rebuilt, it was one of the most reliable middle size bike of that time!
Lovely vid. Richard and Carol. Got there too late at 3pm Saturday, but just about to go back for a better look around today (Sunday). Quite pleased both my BSA and FB left my collection at the Bonhams auction.
@RichardASK We did film your bikes and there will be an auction vid up next Saturday where hopefully we can add some sales figures too. Be interested to see what the HRD lot 297 Vincent makes.
10:40 mins that is a Suzuki 125 'Stinger' twin , my best friend Steve used to have the Lime green one , great memories down the old disused railway line between Southwater and Christ hospital
A wonderful display of bikes, thanks for taking the time and forking out a small fortune to bring a record of it to us. There certainly were some bikes there that I didn't know about and stunning looking they were too. The bloke that spent £22,000 renovating that bike may struggle to see a return for his money, it certainly looked the Bee's knees but in a declining market will it fetch what he expects?
Talking about spending a fortune. It cost us another £10 each this year to get into the Bonhams auction there. I'm just editing that vid for next Saturday adding in the actual sold prices compared to the estimates. We're really hoping that video does viewing numbers to try and re-coup the entry cost.
I'm sure it must be world wide as well. There is this nostalgia for the earlier bikes. What we do have here is a small island in the UK with a lot of enthusiasts. It's relatively easy to get these shows together in central England with many private entries. Thanks very much for watching
Thanks for featuring the gorgeous ZXR750 for me! One of my favourite bikes of all time 🥰 I seem to remember reading recently that the shape of the CX500's rear end gave rise to its nickname. Not sure if that's true or not! One of several theories out there. Really enjoy your channel - keep up the good work 😉👍
@MotoMark55 I'm just pleased we found the right bike after asking for suggestions. Plenty of theories on the plastic maggot name already in the comments. I'm not sure I can keep pace with the comments on this video!
I was a long time member of the Kettle Club but moved over to the Kettle Clinic as it was early into using a particular style of messaging board online. It enabled people to make permanent contributions in whatever you were interested in and perhaps good at, because of the way the website was structured. I don’t know if either or both clubs run interactive websites these days. For several years, I became the “go to” person if you desired a matching set of locks, so you needed only a single key again. I enjoyed doing it in a way that many nobody would ever know that the locks had been opened up. Things sort of got on top of me in recent years and I’m no longer a member of anything. Aren’t those Kettles easy on the eye?! Not that I’m biased at all 🤭
@GT380man I've always loved the looks of the machine but have never had the chance to own or ride one. (I was looking at one in the auction video on this channel) Sounds like you have a special skill with the locks. I'm really sorry to hear things haven't been so good for you recently but I hope you've got some pleasure watching the vid. Best wishes from Carol & Richard
Tom Cruise rode GPz 900r in the movie.. I had one too. The 1000 and 1100 came out later. My first bike Kawasaki KZ 250 is nowhere to be seen, on any retro show so far .. It's been forgotten.
@Stefan_trekkie I'm glad someone has given me the Tom Cruise details. Cheers. Each time I film these shows, I'm surprised by spotting a machine I didn't know even existed Thanks for watching, I'll keep a look out for a KZ250
I don't visit Stafford anymore, been there, shown my bikes and been successful every visit, just seem to have lost the restoration interest but I do enjoy your tour around every year. Some of my restorations are on RUclips.
I've been visiting and filming at the classic bike shows for many years. Your bikes many well be somewhere on an older vid. Restoration is extremely time consuming and rarely pays you back for the hours invested (a little like us making RUclips vids) Carol does tell me there are other things in life. Glad you've enjoyed the brief tour. I'm editing the auction room video now for next Saturday. It will be interesting to see if classics are still holding their values. I will include final sold for prices
@@Banditmanuk Correct restorations are ridiculously expensive and time consuming especially with the rarer Japanese models I chose to restore, showing at Stafford and other locations around the U.K. was an expensive weekend with van hire, diesel, decent accommodation, eating out etc. The inflated parts costs from across the globe mainly from the U.S.A. with stupid shipping charges for the restorations plus the time put into a restoration isn't always appreciated by many at the shows but I did it as a hobby, loved the rewards and always rode what I restored and enjoyed the challenge. Looking forward to your next vlog to see how prices are going. Today I own just one bike, a Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, modern from what I'm used to, requires very little polishing, just a wash now and again.
@@leeandjancruise Carol & I ride a Triumph Street Triple and an MT10 respectively. So far both completely reliable after 8 years and 40.000 miles. Wash them, ride them, enjoy them
The disadvantage of missing Saturday.. was missing all the good people.. it was whether the weather was good, which it was not.. don't mind wet.. but drowned..! Did however with Sunday see the Gentleman with that nice T500K attach a Prize Rosette, to which regarded I forget, was stunning, that bubble headlight screen a master piece. The Z250.. I've yet to see a 1980 W A1 Scorpion Candy Red as I'd had in the day.. a 76 (reg 79 T) DT175 twin shock an a 81 X KE175 in the Mean Green..! It was so nice to ride direct into the back of the Show.. having been redirected from having entered the field first.. saved the normal queuing and long walk.. Top marks.. did miss out on Newspaper. Mind you the bike park became full of vans/trailers at end of day and just 5 bikes remained of which mine was hidden..!
That T500K was stunning. Think I mentioned in the video that we had seen a nasty accident on the slick grass field the previous year, so the bike parking the other side seems a sensible move. Hope you enjoyed your day and Carol & I appreciate you watching
@@Banditmanuk I did, but a second day is never good, you've missed people and things have been pickedover/gone.. by 4:00 the main Hall was packingup/packed/clearing out..! There was only the Prize presentation and Auction running.
The CX 500 was not received very favourably in 1978 and instantly gained the nickname because it was perceived to be slow unsightly and wet. But went on to sell over 300 000 units with examples achieving over 200 000 miles.
Arr. Amazing isn't it that from such a poorly received bike, it goes to almost cult status. It also shows journalists aren't always correct at bike launches. I doubt we will ever see a new piston layout motorcycle engine in the modern era now. Parallel twins or nothing .....
9.15 on a saturday morning, yes its quiet at that time, but cant believe all the large gaps between the stalls, you can drive a car through there now, says it all over pricing on the stalls..
@kevinmurtagh3434 It's a bit of an illusion. We did the bulk of filming early before the crowds. The main hall got really packed, especially when the rain was at it's hardest late morning.
The white Kawasaki is not a KH....they were gutless compared to the 72 range ,i rode them all from new,,the white one was an S1 250,in pearlescent white, the 72 350 was known as the S2 was 45hp ,early one it was detuned after 72. They are completely different animals to the KH range..all detuned sadly
Love these vids. Those CBX's were amazing machines. There's one sat in a garage over the road from me along with a few other old bikes. The owner died and his family are still deciding what to do with them. Err...nope..... Tom Cruise in Top Gun rode the iconic GPZ900R ..... Hard to get our heads around, but back then a 17 year old could ride a Kawasaki KH250 or a Yamaha RD250 that would do a standing quarter of a mile in 15 seconds or so....😲 Which I think was Porsche Carrera type speeds....My mate had a KH250 ....I had a Yamaha RS100 🤣
@paullee6663 I know, I've already been put right on Tom Cruise 😳👍 I was about the last of the lads allowed a 250 on Ls. I briefly had an XS250 (junk) then a mighty RD250LC. This was 81. Think they went to 125 max soon after.
I had to wait years to afford my Honda 6 It was in very good condition cost many thousands and whilst it didn’t have any problems it was a complete disaster ! It didn’t stop it couldn’t corner and wouldn’t go ! Don’t meat your hero’s you’ll be disappointed!
We often look through rose tinted glasses. I'm sure my RD250LC I had in 81 wouldn't feel as magnificent now as I thought it did then. I keep thinking about getting a CBX1000. Carol reminds me my MT10 has been trouble free for 8 years. Thanks for watching
@@Banditmanuk mmm I see your point …….. but I’ve had my trophy 1200 since 91 and it’s never failed to put a smile on my face and my 93 Daytona still scares the world out of me
It was obviously junk..watch 1978 castrol 6 hour at amaroo Park...standard bikes or you've been spoilt riding modern bikes , got 2 cbx1000 and I've ridden them since 1978...and get the pimples on the edge of the tyres worn off...most people scared of the size, OR dropping it so never ride it properly ,plastic swing arm bushes usually worn out ,and engine mounting bolts not tight.. they handle like shit then 😅
@@grahamparker9470 no they all handle like shit due to frames made out of spaghetti mine was a good bike and I had it checked at the dealers and was told that they are all the same and that my expectations were to high as they were considered to be poor even when new
Maybe not the amount of stuff there as last time. At least they got the folks arriving by bikes onto hard tarmac standing. The slick grass in previous years has been a nightmare. Last year £5.00 got two people into the auction side. This year £10 each!
@@Banditmanuk yes absolutely I was glad off the hard standing and I could put the things I bought on my bike so I didn’t have to carry them all day yes I liked that but in my opinion it needs more variety on the stalls it’s great for tools but that’s it really and I do enjoy seeing the old bikes and clubs
What on Earth is that triple engine doing in a RD frame??!!!? It's the most perverse thing I've ever seen. I had a KH 250 back in the day. My pals had RDs. Their bikes were much better than mine; I went for the looks.
@cliveomahoney4096 You may well have picked up on my shock in seeing that unholy matrimony. I guess the owner can do what they like, but not everyone is going to like it. Especially as the original RD engine would have been better than the older Kwak unit. I do love the looks of the original complete Kawasaki air-cooled triples

Probably the first and last time and left just as it was starting to dry up I think maybe move it to earlier in the year 😉I'll just watch your coverage in future although if you want a project to play with there were some good examples there to buy .all I bought was a small oil can not even a drink or a bite to eat 😂 with those road works near bye I'll bet getting out would perhaps have been painful later too I did think that to just look around the auction would cost a minimum of £10 was a bit rich so didn't bother with that .😏👍
There is an earlier show in April!
Cheers
@@lancerbiker5263 Sounds like great memories aboard the CX 👍👍
I owned that metallic green 1973 Honda cb350, great wee bike.
It must be great seeing it again. It certainly caught our eye and is a credit to it's owner and former owners. Thanks for watching our vid
Omg I watched your video last year😮 where's 12 months gone😂👍👍
Tell you what mate..,..you wouldn't want to ride her now....
Bmidg1234. I know, she's piled on the pounds (I realise that it could be medical) but I think she's a rug muncher too
We here in ni called the Suzuki gt750 the water bucket.
I think the Americans call them water Buffalos. The sign above the stand was the Kettle Club so I'm sticking with that
Wonderful video and it looks a really good show 😊👍
@@inverlane1939 Thanks for watching 👍
Phil Holme works full time restoring AR's for a living, his attention to detail is incredible, I had a red AR80 which I wish I'd never sold, I've got no chance of ever finding it though because I can't for the life of me remember the reg and I've no photos of it. To me very pretty super light bikes. A tad on the small side for you Richard 😊
@Peakwanderer He was a good sport talking to us. Interesting guy and his AR50 looked immaculate up close up.
Sadly I'm too big for lots of bikes 😳
Excellent footage 😊
@@robertengland9352 Thank you 😊 🙏
Great 👍
Thanks, appreciate you watching
Great video loved it 👍
Cheers Paul, thanks for watching 👍
Hello 👋 it's Great sharing 👌👍 have a nice day 👍
Hello. Every day is a nice day on a motorcycle
10:40 mins that is a Suzuki 125 'Stinger' twin , my best friend Steve used to have the Lime green one , great memories down the old disused railway line between Southwater and Christ hospital
Thanks for naming it. I really wasn't sure.
Thanks for watching
Brings back some memories, some really rare kit in there, my late brother in law had a ‘kettle’😀
@IanTed To be honest, I just focused on the bikes I personally love. It's such a shame that emissions did for the two-strokes.
I really like the way UK s love the older bikes, mine was a GS750E 1980.Couldn’t find another bike with all that I loved about it.
I'm sure it must be world wide as well. There is this nostalgia for the earlier bikes. What we do have here is a small island in the UK with a lot of enthusiasts. It's relatively easy to get these shows together in central England with many private entries.
Thanks very much for watching
Wow that was good
Kind of you to say. Thanks for watching
@@Banditmanuk brought me back to my youth 😂, regards Richard London..
(I was looking at one in the auction video on this channel)
Sounds like you have a special skill with the locks.
Cheers.
Each time I film these shows, I'm surprised by spotting a machine I didn't know even existed
Thanks for watching, I'll keep a look out for a KZ250
Wash them, ride them, enjoy them
There was a cx500 turbo too.

Mad Max Z 1000?
Yes. We did spot it at Prescott. A better look is here 37 seconds in ruclips.net/video/HNwdGKhFQQI/видео.html&ab_channel=Banditmanuk
The english word for the german name of the Honda CX modells is: "slurry pump". Because the crowd was still sceptic about watercooled bikes.
I told Carol the people of the comments section would know these things. thanks for watching
If only Bike shops sold this lot now!
Yep. Sadly our leaders want us to go electric or public transport. I think my generation had the best of the motorcycle scene
9.15 on a saturday morning, yes its quiet at that time, but cant believe all the large gaps between the stalls, you can drive a car through there now, says it all over pricing on the stalls..

Not as busy as I expected,
@kevinmurtagh3434 It's a bit of an illusion. We did the bulk of filming early before the crowds. The main hall got really packed, especially when the rain was at it's hardest late morning.

Love these vids. Those CBX's were amazing machines. There's one sat in a garage over the road from me along with a few other old bikes. The owner died and his family are still deciding what to do with them.
Honda did do a turbo in the CX500, there's one here in my video ruclips.net/video/qtHxtBf5idA/видео.html
Great walk round and it brings back brilliant memories of days of old. Not sure about that Yamasaki though!

@paullee6663 I know, I've already been put right on Tom Cruise 😳👍
I was about the last of the lads allowed a 250 on Ls. I briefly had an XS250 (junk) then a mighty RD250LC. This was 81. Think they went to 125 max soon after.
I had to wait years to afford my Honda 6
It was in very good condition cost many thousands and whilst it didn’t have any problems it was a complete disaster !
