  • The Russian Toy Terrier. Well this is an interesting looking little man. He’s an intelligent, loving and devoted companion. He’s also a pretty agile and tough little fellow, with a pleasant and even temperament.
Although he’s very easy to train, he does need a firm hand to let him know who’s the boss, they can get a little above their rather small station if not. He’ll need a good regime of regular obedience training to make sure he stays on track.
These little guys are great if you live in an apartment, they’re more than happy in smaller living spaces. Talking of smaller spaces, they quite like perching in your handbag, a sight you’ll see quite regularly around the cities of his native Russia.
He does need his exercise though, and despite his size needs plenty of space for it. They love to run around in a safe place outdoors.
Interesting facts: Russian Toy’s descended from the English Toy Terrier, extremely popular as a decorative companion amongst early 20th century Russian high society.
The Russian Toy Terrier. The only problem with this little dog is that you’ll instantly want another!

the terrier has been dropped from the official FCI name, so it's only called Russian toy now. Also they aren't a handbag dog, they do need plenty of exercise and most of them I know prefer to walk over being in a handbag... check out some of our videos about the breed for some updated and more in depth info :)

Thanks for sharing. We agree 100% that all dogs are "handbag dogs" only when they have had a chance to play, exercise and move around a lot and they enjoy a small and cosy place to go and get some quiet time and rest. And even if there are things we could say about different breeds, the truth is that dogs are individuals and the have their own unique personality traits - just like humans.

We would always recommend reaching out to shelters worldwide and try and adopt one. So many wonderful dogs sadly end up in the shelters. Some shelters focus on specific breeds. And sometimes there are re-homing programs or organizations that focus on certain breeds.

Great watch dog will bark if someone comes into yard, otherwise quiet. Mine is more night active i have lge yard. Bc the terrier in her.Very smart,bc small dont baby as small they get treated like babies, best train young as all pups, better.Bc then you will get annoying. Mine lived with brother, so was desexed, pity,bc she papers pure breed, ears upright is their character important if want show, her brother past yr.won is champion thou he not used for breeding. Can never know with litter can get a short&long cant predict, Easy feed loves mine her chicken neck,or gibblets but small amounts, dont like dog food,i cook mince with grated veg.Tho recent found dog food like but not like dog biscuits dont know why. Adore, easy care,as long healthy yrly immunise important. Best dog,so lucky to get mine long hair, yes have one you want another. Everyone adores her she comes with me mostly, has her bag she ready jumps in. But never makes noise,no one knows have her, until let her out walk.but she will go after other dogs, till intro shes fine. Small plays big as if big. Ideal if you allergys bc hair not fur. Best easiest dog ever. Ideal in units bc not noisy but take walks. They loyal. Thou loves to say hi smell ppl,not annoying. Never ever attempted bite, though caution other dogs, think she big would she wants attack, i keep eye cross road, but slow intro she fine with other dogs then. Really cant go wrong got her@2yr old from dog trainer, such easy to walk loves walk, sentive to noise jumpy, otherwise adorable. More pro than cons.Becoming rarer breed again.Bc hard to breed apparently,id love get breed pair. But they do cost at first. Bc make sure papers, mistaken sometime as chihaha?spell?size similar. The only con small mouths, can have teeth issue, keep in check brush should be regular with special dog paste not human stuff. Live known 12 -15yrs bc just healthy strong loving small dog. Well hope bit more info help.
