I remember when i was conducted practical at my institution school they ask me to explain how do you test insulation resistance test then i explained but i reached there we say select the meter on 500 DC after that invigelator asked me why you put on that 500 dc i failed even today please may someone tell me why?

Helloo... when you did the IR test between LE & NE, you did not press the test button. That why the reading is OL

Probably to test the full length of the wiring
Insulation must be tested up to the point of consumption terminals of lights and appliance. Note loads disconnected.
If switched off, any hidden blunder or two opposing connector(L&N) might not be detected while testing but while it is energized Surg takes place.
You assumed the power was off and didn't test it for any supply. You also didn't test the meter to see if it functions correctly. Never ASS U ME

This is because if the insulator maintains its integrity at 500V then it will be safe for use under normal day to day voltages of around 240-230V

insulation resistance test is done with dc voltage. at least, that's how these testing instruments are designed

Instruments use batteries to operate and the output is therefore D.C.
AC results in impedance value which is irrelevant here. See my another comment.
