Vaughn, I can't believe that you have so few likes on here. Something is off. I love what a gracious host you are, letting Mr. Paul talk, and we all know you're a talker lol. You actually bring a huge amount of music education and history to people, and I myself am so inspired to see you talk to or about people who were huge influences to me, over the years. So in short, you bring strong game, and it's just wonderful.
Thank you for your kind comments!! To be honest it does frustrate me too that my channel seems to be struggling to break through to a bigger audience. I believe that my content is good and sincere and I cover a lot of topics that are not being covered and I work day and night so I do tend to burn out. I will be honest with you that if I don't start seeing results soon it will soon be "game over" . I love doing this but it has become a financial and health burden. You can can help by sharing the videos. This is not a rant, I'm just a tired man and I am grateful for your support. VG:-)
I have had a surround sound home theater stereo set up for almost 17 years now and Kevin Paul’s mixes are a big reason why. I love the medium and I love the experience. It is unique and 2 channel stereo purists can say all that they want about surround being inferior in realism. I think they are just intimidated. ;)
I love Black Celebration 5.1. Amazing. Things definitely pop out in 5.1 Vaughn, that you didn't hear/notice in the original stereo. Really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to seeing him again. Cheers!
I took me a few days to find time to watch this without any distractions, but I really enjoyed every minute of this interview. Thanks to you both for making it happen!
Such a great interview! Thank you Vaughn for introducing Mr. Kevin Paul. I've read article about mixing all DM albums in Sound On Sound magazine years ago and I remember those words about learning how to mix like Gareth Jones, Daniel Miller or Flood.... Mr. Paul and his team made GREAT job, all albums in surround format are something completely different and fresh, you have a lot of space and dynamic, even you feel the sound in the middle of your living room and sometimes you are suprised by sounds you didn't hear before. :-D
the surround mixes are fantastic! i did notice a couple of quirks on black celebration. on "here is the house" they use a dave vocal take for the "and as it happens it happens here in this house" line instead of martin's and for "world full of nothing" they use an alternate vocal for at least the first verse or two . if you listen closely they're not quite as on point as the actual vocal. i love the violator surround mixes! "the sweetest perfection" made my head spin "clean" is pretty awesome too! what a crazy huge job this whole project must've been! amazing work!
I’ve been a DM fan since the beginning. I’ve read thousands of articles and interviews, read all the books and watched countless interviews and I thought I could never get any more “insights” into the music. Vaughan, you just keep coming up with gem after gem of new angles and information about the whole DM musical experience. Nothing else comes near your show. You’re streets ahead of the rest. BRAVO Sir! 👏👏👏
A bit late in watching this because of time lol but, what an awesome interview! I feel like I need to update my stereo system as I am missing out? Thanks Vaughn!
What a fantastic and insightful interview. I am fortunate enough to own all of the 5.1 multi-channel SACD's and they are some of the most cherished items within my substantial surround sound music library.
Please keep up this great work. These talks are pure gold and I am very thankful. And always remember: in a geek talk, there is nothing like geeky. ;) Cheers, mate.
Another stellar interview! Your Geek Talk content is right on point - I feel like I'm interning at Mute Records and learning mixing techniques from the all time greats. Keep it up, mate!!
Oh great EP!! I love me da 5.1 audio!! My favourite codec for outward listening. Thank you doing this, Vaughn. Hope you feel better as well. Sounds like you’ve got Malaise. And thank you, Kevin! I can’t tell you how much I love your 5.1 mixes. 2006 was such a great year for surround enthusiasts. :)
Brilliant interview thank you very much. I think the SACD mixes sound superb on both the stereo and 5.1 mixes, if anyone’s not listened to them yet I recommend you do.
I have a 5.1 system in my living room, and i have heard all DM's albums in surround sound (even the Goldfrapp one, a few Nick Cave and Beatles records) But i still prefer stereo. That said surround is revealing and fascinating. For example there is guitar part in "Clean" i never heard. And the piano parts in "Mercy in you" makes the track soar to a higher level.
Niklas, on VIOLATOR, listen to the very first 2 seconds and you will hear the cue sound, which was preserved on the SACD surround mix.... it is beyond words...
I have a 5.1 in my living room as well. I only have Black Celebration and Violator by DOM. I want Masses and Ultra. The other 5.1 I have is Duran Duran - Astronaut. I also want to get my hands on Fleetwood Mac - Rumours.
This was brilliant! The 5.1 albums are so good and different from the stereo versions. Only album missing is "Spirit" I wonder why they didn't release Spirit in 5.1.
Mate!!!! Another fantastic interview. You’ve got Kevin bring back to the channel. Please do the appendix to your album reviews from S&S until PTA and ask him details about his view of 2.0 and 5.1. Mixing process. Effort made by producers etc. And some technical details too. I’d love to see in one move appendix of S&S to V., but then you can add his insights to each album review starting from SOFAD until PTA. I knew about Kevin’s work, heard him, but never that long and that deep. You are growing and getting bigger. I’m concert freak, statistics, details, stage, instruments, setlists, but thanks to your interview I’m diving more and more into the production topics.
Very interesting!! I am also backing you up on the Violator mixing, I always loved the details on that record... all the different effects and sounds coming together, already starting with World in my eyes (excellent hi-hats!!). It sounds simple at first, but if you notice these details, thats a whole new world! AND this is (in my mind) what keeps an album interesting. You may not hear it, but subconsciously it makes a difference... and one more thing: Thats one of the main differences between Delta Machine and Spirit I believe... their latest record has far more details than the other one!
Hearing his go thru trying to unpack Violator into 100 tracks was mindbending! Thanks for the wonderfull interview. One question Vaughn my brother...can you make a Video that explains the basic Engineering terminology and use an example..it would be so helpfull for some of us who hear you refrence terms like Fade, Compresa, Delay, Reverb.etc. and Im not quite sure how that sounds? It would be so very helpfull especially as the Violator Series is here and ut is impossible to refrence that Masterpiece without very exacting terminology and knowing how they apply. Thanks for another wonderfull get in your interview. I could listen to this for hours...
Hi Vaughn and thank you again for another amazinlgy interesting interview. I watched a recent interview in Italian with Pino Pischetola and he's apparently very much into "dolby atmos". I thought that it would be great to see him involved in doing some dolby atmos work on Violator, but this was before learning that all the tracks on Violator were dry, and how much work took Kevin to reconstruct the sounds. I'd also like to know what Alan's envolvement in the 5.1. remaster has been, technically speaking.
So they used over 100 tracks/song when they mixed Violator. Thats absolutely insane. I didnt even knew that they had so big multitrack recorders back in 1990. I thought that thing came with the computers and when everything became digital.
Vaughn, you've forgotten to switch the A-L-A-R-M on, when Kevin starts to talk about Alan! And the general question 'bout him is that: is it truth that his contribution to the creation of the 5.1 versions was limited only to the fact that he provided his archived DAT tapes with the original samples?
after watching this fantastic interview...I went and had a listen to the 5.1 tracks from 1986 and on. Gotta say: Not a fan. Sounds like an overly wet effects processor in a 5.1 stereo home reciever. Only one I liked was Dave's vocal on Enjoy the Silence.
