All the people who Micheal gets on to talk are all of the one side throughout the documentary. not that there is anything wrong with that what so ever , And as the title says "A British view" I'm merely extending that opinion of such. This is so sad .. to think once again that the true story of Ireland and British Occupation had been going on for 500 plus years … I wish I could do a piece on all the massacres of the innocent Irish people that had lost their lives! The truth is the British spent 500 plus years perfecting colonization on the Irish ☘️ and then came to America and did the same thing to the Native Americans/ Indigenous people of this country!!! This breaks my heart to hear such ignorance and total one sided view! My great grandfather came here at 17 years old with 5 shillings in his pocket.. he lost his language, his culture, his music, and most of all he never got to go home .. never saw his parents again!!! He left along with 8 other children because in Ireland an Irish Catholic could be shot on sight for no reason at all! On the O’Neill family land today there is still the mass rock where they had to practice their religion in secret and hiding .. and had they been found out they would have been killed .. this is in 1875 and continued through until 1923 at the end of the civil war .. and that is how slick the British are .. they were tired of losing men due to Michael Collins .. so they set up the Irish to fight the Irish .. I could go on and on .. this is pathetic .. and there is men on her talking about Home Rule .. the British were never going to give them Home Rule .. this is the 1900’s and most people in this country and many others have no idea the extent of the British Oppression.. Linking "Blood Sacrifice " of the 1916 leadership to that of suicide bombers in modern conflicts shows a complete misunderstanding of the concept. Firstly, there is no religious aspect in the 1916 notion, as well as no deliberate targeting of civilians. Finally, it is the 1916 leadership who sacrifices themselves, not their soldiers or fellow Irish people, for the Republic. Can't see any of the leadership of the various terrorist groups today doing the same. This so-called historian should be ashamed for making such a obviously flawed parallel. Since I first became aware of the Easter Rising, I have always had the impression that the Rising leaders were initially a minority in terms of support in Dublin at least, after all, Dublin was an exception in what became the Republic of Ireland, being a Unionist city (Edward Carson was born in Dublin for example), however it was the proportion of civilian casualties and the rate of executions of the rising leaders that changed opinion. John D Ruddy did a video about the Easter Rising himself in 2016 and the bit where the British troops landed in Ireland to make their way to Dublin confirmed what was said here, as they landed, they were initially applauded by the locals, but it all changed as they approached the city itself and the aforementioned Mount Street Bridge
Those who won at easter 1916 lost and those who lost won. The 16 of 16 planted the seeds for a british withdrawal from most of Ireland less than 6 years later.
It's really sad also there was Irish families who had sons in the British army at that very time. It divided Irish people. It was only when the British shot all the leaders of 1916 that the people of Ireland came support the cause

I don't think anyone of any intelligence could believe that when a General orders his men to "Take No Prisoners". he might not have actually meant what it sounded like. It would be highly irresponsible of him to say something like that when he later says it was NOT what he meant. I therefore assert that Brigadier General Low should have been tried as a War Criminal for issuing such an Order. Later in the War Rebels also had committed the same toward surrendering British Troops and were accused by the English of War Crimes - so in my judgement Low was to blame for beginning such retaliation toward Rebel Troops. I also know when the American Colonies were in rebellion English Troops did the same toward the Colonial Forces in Rebellion. The "British Dragoons" issued orders of "No Quarter" - meaning "No Surrender accepted". - . ... To give no quarter means to show no mercy, to award no clemency. To give no quarter originally applied to military situations. In numerous instance instance entire villages of Woman, Children, and even a Priest in one village. They were all slaughtered by locking them in the town Church's and setting fire to the Church's because those villagers were known to have some of their men folk fighting on the American Rebel Side. So we see that "No Quarter" had been used by the British at least on these earlier occasions. To this day Americans have never forgotten nor forgiven and the remains with the Graveyards are considered "Hallow Ground" and National Historical Sites Protected..
and it is worth noting in my opinion that General Maxwell made matters even worse and set the stage for a "Never Ending" continuation of the Rebellion. It was the same with the above incidents I mentioned of Civilians being Targeted. It accomplished "Inflaming the Entire Population" against the British and we see how that worked out for the British in the American Colonies.

Genealogy can attest to that. Even Frederick Dietrichsen enjoyed a brief but poignant chance encounter with his Irish wife and his children just before he was killed on Mount Street Bridge during the Rising. Irishmen and british men fought in ww1 in the trenches, and in 1916. Several of the republican leaders of the Easter Rising had strong links to the British Army. To suggest there was zero mingling done is not true, or fact, for that matter.
The Irish tried the democratic route in the 19th and early 20th century. At every turn the English reneged on the promise of greater independence. The reason people opposed the uprising was their belief that the English response would be violent and punitive. They were right!

While the Proclamation doesn't expressly mention Germany, the Military Council, i.e. the seven signatories of said Proclamation, were in contact with the German government regarding provision of weapons and "advisors" to train Irish soldiers. A partial shipment, with no heavy weapons or personnel, was sent on the Libau (disguised as the Aud, a neutral Norwegian ship) and capture by British forces. En route to Cork Harbour under British escort, the ship was scuttled by her crew.

India 1947 and some of the African colonies, but the situation with Northern Ireland and Scotland shows they would not have let us go if they had a choice in the matter. We are 'too close to home' for their traditional ruling classes. Only violence by the IRA between 1919-21 made them realise the State had to be at least independent in areas where they had no British colonists to pretend to care about. Otherwise we would have gone round in circles the same way we did between 1840s, Daniel O Connell's day when the British parliament preferred to starve and kill off people to make way for cows, 1880s when Parnell was undermined by bigoted moralists to stop Ireland having Home Rule, and the 1891-1913 Kill Home Rule with Kindness policies that sought a paternalistic bribing sort of subjugation to try and buy the people's desire for freedom with land reforms in place of the previously brutal subjugation, and then WW1 came, Home Rule was shelved AGAIN conveniently, and the rest is history.

All this talk about the British soldiers being cheered by the people of Dublin, Dan Breen talked about this, the Irish had become slavish and serf minded, the men and women of 1916 shook us out of this stupper. Many working class Irish fought for the British in WWI and of course the wives and widows of these men supported the British army. Many were worried about their pentions because of what the rebels were doing,that doesn't mean the Irish saw themselves as British. The Irish people began supporting the rebels after the executions because their Brithishness was only skin deep.
In fact the view that the rising was a betrayal of the men fighting the great war was widely shared in Ireland at the time , the rebels were spat at by the population of Dublin when they were lead away after surrender . Something happened after the execution of the rebel leaders that shifted opinion towards to todays view that these idiots were freedom fighters , and history is written by the winners so that is the view held in Britain today ( amongst the fairly small number of people who in fact know that it happened )

As they were led away into imprisonment or death, they were spat at, and horse shit and stones were hurled at them. General Maxwell and his slow motion executions of the leaders of the Easter Rising was what turned the sympathies of the population of Dublin, and most of Ireland, around. The final execution, involving James Connolly being shot sitting on a chair because he was unable to stand due to a wound, was the final straw. It is important to be honest about our history.

Given that the Easter Rising was confined almost exclusively to Dublin, it is hardly surprising that people outside Dublin did not react in the same way. However, the feeling across the country, before Maxwell's executions started, was very much the same. I do have to agree with you about the present day attitudes of a lot of English people towards Ireland and the Irish. The most recent example was the notion floated in the UK media that the Republic of Ireland(RoI) should get a temporary leave of absence from the EU, so that the UK wouldn't have to worry about the Backstop... Apparently we have some sort of duty to sacrifice ourselves to make life easy for them...
What happened it the British as usual in relation to Ireland went too far and turned public opinion against them. Two other things also stood out the Home Rule Bill was passed but not implemented, then atrocities were committed against the local population who themselves had nothing to do with rebel activities. The atrocities peaked when years later the Black and Tans went onto the pitch at a game and indiscriminately shot into the spectators killing a dozen or so. It was shortly after that the British decided to leave.

Questioning the orders given to troops is pointless. The British were using the standard tactics they used in the rest of their empire. They would have done the same even if the orders had never been issued.

What was "divisive" was the subsequent shooting by the vengeful English military leaders against a wall in Montjoy Prison of the "rising's" leaders. That made the local Irish unite against the occupying invaders - AKA the English (not "British").

Redmond lead the call for Irishmen to join in WW1, an imperialist war, which lead to the death of 30'000 Irishmen (30 times more than the Rising). Carson was a supremacist thug who let murder gangs in police uniforms run the streets after partition and before WW1 tried to start a civil war. It was he who brought the gun back into Irish politics. The joke that the leaders of the Rising had never tried democracy ignores the fact that under British rule there was no democracy. At best they could be elected as a powerless minority in Westminster. In terms of the portrayal of the British officials and generals remember it was their artillery and atrocities that caused most of the deaths during the Rising. This was less than a lifetime after the genocide of the famine that caused 1-2 million deaths in Ireland. Britain was ruling one of the most brutal and harmful empires in history. Carson and his cronies armed themselves with German arms before the First World War and were prepared to fight the British if they tried to implement Home Rule. If the British Army hadn't mutinied at Curragh, they would probably have been fighting the British during the First World War, which would have caused more problems for us than the rebels in Dublin. However, I am one of these people who believe that the First World War should never have happened and we would have been better to have stayed out of it. The First World War caused many more casualties than the Easter Rising for British, Irish, French and German soldiers alike. A horrendous waste of young lives for nothing - not to mention what it led to later, namely the rise of the Nazis as well as Stalin.
The main reasons that the English ignored preparations for an uprising were, general contempt for the Irish, delusional levels of self confidence, but more importantly that the heavily armed so called police could easily suppress any uprising. Mostly they were right. The RIC was in possession of field artillery and machine guns and should be really considered an army of occupation. So the English easily out gunned the Irish. But their contempt and vanity eventually lost the Irish War of Independence.

so, Northern Ireland isn't being divisive? Both of my Grandfathers fought in the war of independence, both had never considered an Irish Republic before the executions of the leaders of the Rising. They would have been content with home rule and remaining part of the empire. Shooting the leaders, especially Connolly, changed everything. Looking at it from modern eyes, it is easy to forget that and stick with the idealism that has been drilled into us since childhood and for over 100 years. I have never liked Michael Portillo but I think he presented this very well and there was so much in this that I was never taught in school and anyone who knows me knows that I was obsessed with the Rising and especially Pearse.

It was not Irish before the Normans came to civilize the Island. Irish wasn't defined until Queen Elizabeth 1 first called it Ireland and the people Irish. In fact there wasn't even a County system until then either. The natives were todays Travellers. But Thatcher did a lot of good as well, she ended the monopoly unions had over literally everything which is why so many industries were decimated, she put an end to that, although people did suffer! The comments at 20.22 to 20:32 are not only provocative but are complete disingenuous to the period of the Rising. Linking "Blood Sacrifice " of the 1916 leadership to that of suicide bombers in modern conflicts shows a complete misunderstanding of the concept. Firstly, there is no religious aspect in the 1916 notion, as well as no deliberate targeting of civilians. Finally, it is the 1916 leadership who sacrifices themselves, not their soldiers or fellow Irish people, for the Republic. Can't see any of the leadership of the various terrorist groups today doing the same. This so-called historian should be ashamed for making such a obviously flawed parallel. Since I first became aware of the Easter Rising, I have always had the impression that the Rising leaders were initially a minority in terms of support in Dublin at least, after all, Dublin was an exception in what became the Republic of Ireland, being a Unionist city (Edward Carson was born in Dublin for example), however it was the proportion of civilian casualties and the rate of executions of the rising leaders that changed opinion. John D Ruddy did a video about the Easter Rising himself in 2016 and the bit where the British troops landed in Ireland to make their way to Dublin confirmed what was said here, as they landed, they were initially applauded by the locals, but it all changed as they approached the city itself and the aforementioned Mount Street Bridge

I don't think anyone of any intelligence could believe that when a General orders his men to "Take No Prisoners". he might not have actually meant what it sounded like. It would be highly irresponsible of him to say something like that when he later says it was NOT what he meant. I therefore assert that Brigadier General Low should have been tried as a War Criminal for issuing such an Order. Later in the War Rebels also had committed the same toward surrendering British Troops and were accused by the English of War Crimes - so in my judgement Low was to blame for beginning such retaliation toward Rebel Troops. I also know when the American Colonies were in rebellion English Troops did the same toward the Colonial Forces in Rebellion. The "British Dragoons" issued orders of "No Quarter" - meaning "No Surrender accepted". - . ... To give no quarter means to show no mercy, to award no clemency. To give no quarter originally applied to military situations. In numerous instance instance entire villages of Woman, Children, and even a Priest in one village. They were all slaughtered by locking them in the town Church's and setting fire to the Church's because those villagers were known to have some of their men folk fighting on the American Rebel Side. So we see that "No Quarter" had been used by the British at least on these earlier occasions. To this day Americans have never forgotten nor forgiven and the remains with the Graveyards are considered "Hallow Ground" and National Historical Sites Protected..
and it is worth noting in my opinion that General Maxwell made matters even worse and set the stage for a "Never Ending" continuation of the Rebellion. It was the same with the above incidents I mentioned of Civilians being Targeted. It accomplished "Inflaming the Entire Population" against the British and we see how that worked out for the British in the American Colonies.

Genealogy can attest to that. Even Frederick Dietrichsen enjoyed a brief but poignant chance encounter with his Irish wife and his children just before he was killed on Mount Street Bridge during the Rising. Irishmen and british men fought in ww1 in the trenches, and in 1916. Several of the republican leaders of the Easter Rising had strong links to the British Army. To suggest there was zero mingling done is not true, or fact, for that matter.
The Irish tried the democratic route in the 19th and early 20th century. At every turn the English reneged on the promise of greater independence. The reason people opposed the uprising was their belief that the English response would be violent and punitive. They were right!
But the English as usual in the case of Ireland went too far and turned public opinion against them.

While the Proclamation doesn't expressly mention Germany, the Military Council, i.e. the seven signatories of said Proclamation, were in contact with the German government regarding provision of weapons and "advisors" to train Irish soldiers. A partial shipment, with no heavy weapons or personnel, was sent on the Libau (disguised as the Aud, a neutral Norwegian ship) and capture by British forces. En route to Cork Harbour under British escort, the ship was scuttled by her crew.

India 1947 and some of the African colonies, but the situation with Northern Ireland and Scotland shows they would not have let us go if they had a choice in the matter. We are 'too close to home' for their traditional ruling classes. Only violence by the IRA between 1919-21 made them realise the State had to be at least independent in areas where they had no British colonists to pretend to care about. Otherwise we would have gone round in circles the same way we did between 1840s, Daniel O Connell's day when the British parliament preferred to starve and kill off people to make way for cows, 1880s when Parnell was undermined by bigoted moralists to stop Ireland having Home Rule, and the 1891-1913 Kill Home Rule with Kindness policies that sought a paternalistic bribing sort of subjugation to try and buy the people's desire for freedom with land reforms in place of the previously brutal subjugation, and then WW1 came, Home Rule was shelved AGAIN conveniently, and the rest is history.

Good man Fisk. Ireland couldn't have gained her freedom without the rising, dead right. England would never have let Ireland go without having it's arm forced. All this talk about the British soldiers being cheered by the people of Dublin, Dan Breen talked about this, the Irish had become slavish and serf minded, the men and women of 1916 shook us out of this stupper. Many working class Irish fought for the British in WWI and of course the wives and widows of these men supported the British army. Many were worried about their pentions because of what the rebels were doing,that doesn't mean the Irish saw themselves as British. The Irish people began supporting the rebels after the executions because their Brithishness was only skin deep.
In fact the view that the rising was a betrayal of the men fighting the great war was widely shared in Ireland at the time , the rebels were spat at by the population of Dublin when they were lead away after surrender . Something happened after the execution of the rebel leaders that shifted opinion towards to todays view that these idiots were freedom fighters , and history is written by the winners so that is the view held in Britain today ( amongst the fairly small number of people who in fact know that it happened )

What '5888max' wrote about the reaction of Dublin's population to the rebels of the Easter Rising is true. As they were led away into imprisonment or death, they were spat at, and horse shit and stones were hurled at them.
General Maxwell and his slow motion executions of the leaders of the Easter Rising was what turned the sympathies of the population of Dublin, and most of Ireland, around. The final execution, involving James Connolly being shot sitting on a chair because he was unable to stand due to a wound, was the final straw.

Given that the Easter Rising was confined almost exclusively to Dublin, it is hardly surprising that people outside Dublin did not react in the same way. However, the feeling across the country, before Maxwell's executions started, was very much the same.
I do have to agree with you about the present day attitudes of a lot of English people towards Ireland and the Irish. The most recent example was the notion floated in the UK media that the Republic of Ireland(RoI) should get a temporary leave of absence from the EU, so that the UK wouldn't have to worry about the Backstop...
Apparently we have some sort of duty to sacrifice ourselves to make life easy for them...
What happened it the British as usual in relation to Ireland went too far and turned public opinion against them. Two other things also stood out the Home Rule Bill was passed but not implemented, then atrocities were committed against the local population who themselves had nothing to do with rebel activities. The atrocities peaked when years later the Black and Tans went onto the pitch at a game and indiscriminately shot into the spectators killing a dozen or so. It was shortly after that the British decided to leave.
Brits have come a long way. the BBC yesterday reported that they are trying to pass a law preventing prosecution of soldiers for wwar crimes in Ireland, and Iraq.

The Irish Guards would have done so. They were not a Catholic Regiment. The Muster Fusiliers wouldn't have done so.

Redmond lead the call for Irishmen to join in WW1, an imperialist war, which lead to the death of 30'000 Irishmen (30 times more than the Rising). Carson was a supremacist thug who let murder gangs in police uniforms run the streets after partition and before WW1 tried to start a civil war. It was he who brought the gun back into Irish politics. The joke that the leaders of the Rising had never tried democracy ignores the fact that under British rule there was no democracy. At best they could be elected as a powerless minority in Westminster. In terms of the portrayal of the British officials and generals remember it was their artillery and atrocities that caused most of the deaths during the Rising. This was less than a lifetime after the genocide of the famine that caused 1-2 million deaths in Ireland. Britain was ruling one of the most brutal and harmful empires in history. No whitewash attempts will change this

Carson and his cronies armed themselves with German arms before the First World War and were prepared to fight the British if they tried to implement Home Rule. If the British Army hadn't mutinied at Curragh, they would probably have been fighting the British during the First World War, which would have caused more problems for us than the rebels in Dublin. However, I am one of these people who believe that the First World War should never have happened and we would have been better to have stayed out of it. The First World War caused many more casualties than the Easter Rising for British, Irish, French and German soldiers alike. A horrendous waste of young lives for nothing - not to mention what it led to later, namely the rise of the Nazis as well as Stalin.

The main reasons that the English ignored preparations for an uprising were, general contempt for the Irish, delusional levels of self confidence, but more importantly that the heavily armed so called police could easily suppress any uprising. Mostly they were right.
The RIC was in possession of field artillery and machine guns and should be really considered an army of occupation. So the English easily out gunned the Irish. But their contempt and vanity eventually lost the Irish War of Independence.

so, Northern Ireland isn't being divisive? Both of my Grandfathers fought in the war of independence, both had never considered an Irish Republic before the executions of the leaders of the Rising. They would have been content with home rule and remaining part of the empire.
Shooting the leaders, especially Connolly, changed everything.
Looking at it from modern eyes, it is easy to forget that and stick with the idealism that has been drilled into us since childhood and for over 100 years.
I have never liked Michael Portillo but I think he presented this very well and there was so much in this that I was never taught in school and anyone who knows me knows that I was obsessed with the Rising and especially Pearse.

It was not Irish before the Normans came to civilize the Island. Irish wasn't defined until Queen Elizabeth 1 first called it Ireland and the people Irish. In fact there wasn't even a County system until then either. The natives were todays Travellers. Dublin was always a foreign city in Ireland and especially British for 800 years hence the name jackeens.

But Thatcher did a lot of good as well, she ended the monopoly unions had over literally everything which is why so many industries were decimated, she put an end to that, although people did suffer! She was certainly controversial and her short term benefits weren't good but in the long term it saved what ever was left of the nation!
