Crazy as hell that I’m watching an Italian man who died 17 years ago sing a 170-year-old opera song on a 60-year-old Russian TV program from my bed in the US in 2024. Sometimes the future has its perks.
Such a charisma, and apparent humility in his seemingly unconscious body language. The way he approaches the piano, the way he smiles, just enjoying the music and the moment in between his own passages, when piano soloes, he conveys just an utter delight to be performing, as if he’s both performer and audience member simultaneously, just a sheer joy to be around opera music. The talent speaks for itself: towering. But the visual of this unbearded pre-superstar Pavarotti gives the impression the highest heights of this music is as natural to him as breathing.
Not only the beauty and magnificence of his voice, but to see his sweet and happy smile as he looks out at the audience -- the joy of making and sharing great music.

The technique was tight and the natural voice a glorious trumpet at the top. The interpretation was lacking in much thought however. He had a natural grace. Yet you can tell he was a dope. Yet what did it matter he built the sound sold it and let the composers vision speak for itsself. So in that sense he was rather smart.
