I use a military surplus canteen and cup cook set, because that is what was in my price range. If money was no object, I would go with the PF40. I prefer stainless over aluminum because it is non reactive and won’t create funny colors or flavors if I bring something with tomatoes for dinner 😂
That Swiss stove would be my first choice, " Oh!" " Wait!" That is what I use anyway. I carry both the U.S. Mess Kit and the Swiss stove, both fit well into most of my back packs, they both come in handy, as does my U.S. Canteen cups. I carry two usually. A habit I gotten into in the Marine Corps....Another great video Blackie...
I have two 2 quart bushpots, and the French press kit. I recently ordered the French press pantry set. I've been using the 2 quart bushpot for several years, in the field and at home. Makes good rice, soups, stews, pasta, mashed potatoes, easy to drain out water when boiling pasta, or making Mac and cheese. The 2 quart bushpot is the Perfect overall size for 1-3 people in my opinion. The one quart... I don't have one, but I plan to get one. The m-40.. dont have one, again, plan to. I do have the French press... makes great coffee, and is good size for cooking too. Just my two cents.
Hi Blackie, I have to agree with you, picking the M-40. Would be the most versatile for me too. thanks for the tip on putting a canteen cup inside, never tried that and didn't know it fits. Great video!👍
M-40 Stainless steel from the Pathfinder, looks like a high-end set…. and the tip about the stainless steel G.I. canteen cup add on…. I have a few extra canteen cups that would work fine….
I love my PF 1qt Bushpot and use it multiple times per week. I also have the PF40 and have used it many times. They are some very tough gear that will last my lifetime for sure.
I’m coming in late to Bushcraft having been a backpacker most of my life and with my kids. But as I’m getting older moving to more Bushcrafts, as I understand it, and teaching my grown children as I go along. I like the versatility of the M40 over the bushpot and I like the multiple use options. Just wish there were bushcraft classes closer to Wyoming I could take my family to to increase knowledge and community
Blackie, Great Information on the Pathfinder Bush Pot cooking set , I prefer the 2 quart it better for me. Your meals are better than Black Eyed Peas and Sweet Pickle Relish for 3 meals a day for several days in the outdoors. Thanks Again Sir. For All You Do. God Bless Y'all .Tim L.
I have the Pathfinder PM-40, really nice pot. About half a pound lighter than the real thing but still plenty sturdy. I put a small grill in it, laid it on the side and cooked a Cornish hen in it.
While growing up, I heard several people complaining of not having "a pot to piss in". It was hard to see why they couldn't find one. I often wondered if there is an appropriate size for that. Apparently, there was also a shortage of windows. 😁 If I do try to cook ramen noodles, I'm really careful which pot I choose.
I know the question was picking one, but I think they serve different purposes. I carry the 1qt pot with my haversack for a small day kit. If I’m going multi day or have a base camp, I use the M40. The M40 definitely lends itself more towards the kind of cooking I’ll do when at a camp more than a day or two. A fourth choice I tried was the Pathfinder canteen set. Loved the canteen but I absolutely hate the folding handle on the cup, I never could keep it from collapsing while I was using it. If they put the butterfly handles back on it it would be perfect.
The two qt setup…you can use it easily on a Colman single or double burner stove. Sometimes you can’t have a fire and some places you can’t use an alcohol stove because it doesn’t turn off like a gas stove or Colman does. Have fun stay safe.
Hi Blackie! Thank you for all these cool and very interesting advices. Think I will adapt my kit for sure. Stay safe and all the best from Austria 🇦🇹🤠👍🏕️🔥
i was leaning toward the 2 qt, but think Ill get the m40 first. This was perfect as I was trying to figure what to get. So many options are set for solo trips, I have a Stanley 2 cup system that works great for me with a twig stove and an alcohol stove I made. But Im starting to go out with my 2 sons, 12 and 7 and am needing more cooking volume
👍 Good & Fair comparison of these 3 products. I also have all 3 from SRO and agree with comments. Having said that, the SRO 2-quart pot is now part of my RV cook system and never goes on a trek with me. Even for 2 people I can get by w/ the 1-quart pot. Again, for the reasons you mention, especially your point on versatility, if I had to select 1 for my only bush pot, I would learn toward my SRO M40 Swedish style mess pot. Not sure I would grab it, but I would strongly pulled in that direction, I just like my 1-quart pot set up. Inside my M40 I can store the Trangia stove, a bottle of fuel for the stove, cleaning sponge, a small bottle of detergent, and a small bottle of olive oil. When all this, plus a titanium Fire Box Nano and small titanium fry pan, is added to my 1-quart pot the weight between this and the M40 is about the same. The 1-quart system is more compact in the pack. I use a vintage Kelty A4 external frame pack.
Great vid Blackie. I bought two M-40 sets back when they were $10-$15 each. Like you, I removed the bail hooks because they were to noisy and in the way. I learned to bake biscuits from your M-40 video; works great! Thxs fer the canteen cup tip too; I will have to try it. Take care.
Hey Blackie! I've been resisting but you have finally convinced me! (no mean feat I might add) As of today, I'm saving my nickels for the Pathfinder M-40 and a Trangia! Hope to have it by the gathering! See you then! Regards and best to you and Ms. Hope!
I prefer the seagull cook pot. Quart and a half one just personal opinion in history of use. It's hands down the best cook part I've ever used osed mine for ten years non stop for ten years it's held up stainless steel rugged construction comparable to the world war II mess kits which I carried as a kid it's easy to use cuz I don't like digging things out of a small little container that my hand can't fit in
I have an US made enamelled 2qt and two canteen cups. I had the chance years ago to purchase a M40 knockoff (either it was Swedish or an old East German). These three cater to some my needs (unless I’m using either of my Dutch (camp) ovens. I would choose an original large German cook pot. Blackie, nice spot to film a video. Is that a lake behind you?
I looked for a Swedish kit based on your recent video and couldn't find a decent priced complete set on Ebay. I then picked up the Pathfinder M40 and love it. Well, I love the second one I got because the first one had shoddy welds on one side of the wire pot hanger.
Canned foods have a spray-on plastic liner to resist corrosion which shouldn't be heated. It's gotten safer over the years but it's still plastic. If it's a matter of survival I'd do it, but if I had any other way to cook the contents I would try to avoid heating the can directly.
I bought the pathfinder Swedish kit and agree that it’s the most versatile and compact cooking system. I like it because I don’t need to carry a separate wind shield plus the fuel consumption is very much more efficient with an alcohol burner
have a 1 qt pot that i use as my oven. for the grate i use a weber hotdog grate, flatten for my shelf. think those disposable charcoal grills. the thin aluminum grate on those is the same material.
I have them all including the 120 oz bushpot plus the eight inch and 10 inch fry pans. It depends what I'm planning. If its an over night. I'll go with the 1qt. If I'm going fishing I'll add a frying pan. If I'm going for 2 weeks I'll add more. Actually when you get right down to it, all you need is a pot, a piece of foil to make a hobo meal, and a stick to wrap your bannock on.
The m40 is definitely the best stand alone, hands down.. i would get one this very minute if i could afford it, but it always just out of my budget.. i keep watch ebay for one to pop up, but...
I have all three myself and find my self switching back and forth depending on time and out and planned meals .. I do wish I could get my hands ahold of some of that peak one gear on the cheap. ,,ebay sellers think they are worth more than gold .. lol
been running the PF titanium bushpot (holds a little over 1 quart/37 ozs) when alone, and the 2 quart when with another person and we're eating together. I always have 2 large nesting cuts with my water bottles also.
Many food cans have a liner applied to the inside of the can that can melt off into the food, it’s better to cook in the pot and deal with having to wash the pot than risk poisoning yourself
The small bushpot is not big enough for active teenagers. From 16-24 I could pack away a lot of chow. I had some friends that would invite me for supper and she was a portions cook. I would stop at a fast food place and have a burger and fries before going to their place for supper and finish the evening at Dairy Queen. So keep in mind teenage boys are always hungry. If only I could eat a quarter of what I use to and gain no weight.
@@waynehendrix4806 If someone asked to helped them on the weekend, I would buy the biggest package of balogna, a package of sliced cheese and a loaf of bread for my lunch. Picnic or potluck I carried a chinet platter. No one cared because most had already raised boys or they a few years behind me.
being forward deployed, i ordered a 1qt to play with. should be here in about another week or 2. not really concerned with the rush. its not going to see really any field use. just something to experiment with in the at home kitchen
I say nest a 1 qt inside of the 2 qt. With a 8 inch skillet on the the bottom. Along with the bottle or canteen set you should be able to do about whatever you want. just as easily as having the m40 ... Jmo
thanks for watching !!
Blackie is like that beloved uncle that is so knowledgeable and relaxing to listen to. I look forward to each new video.
Great job Blackie. I love your videos. I am so happy you survived your stroke. 🙏

Good conclusions the M40 is the SAK for sure
I know that this really has nothing to do with the subject of the video, but I really like the location you chose for it ! !
That Swiss stove would be my first choice, " Oh!" " Wait!" That is what I use anyway. I agree with you Blackie. The M40 is a great kit
I agree. The Pathfinder M40 is the way to go.

Excellent video. The only one of those that I have is the two quart pot, but that M40 really looks useful!
I agree with you the 1qt for one person is great and the 2qt for 2 people is the way to go but for a one tool option the m40 is the top choice
While growing up, I heard several people complaining of not having "a pot to piss in". It was hard to see why they couldn't find one.

Good informational video Blackie, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
I have both the one and two quart. The two I use more, depending on what I plan to eat. If plan on baking or roasting something, I take the two quart
If l can have only 1, I can cook one qt in a 2 qt. But I can't cook 2 qt. in a 1qt pot.
The two qt setup…you can use it easily on a Colman single or double burner stove. Sometimes you can’t have a fire and some places you can’t use an alcohol stove because it doesn’t turn off like a gas stove or Colman does. Have fun stay safe.
Great video
Awesome review Blackie!
Thanks Blackie, great insights.

Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺, thank you for your time to make these videos.
Tuff choice, I have all 3 of the pots myself. Would have to lean toward the Swedish m40
👍 Good & Fair comparison of these 3 products. I also have all 3 from SRO and agree with comments.

My M40 has been my go to kit for 15 years. Most versible piece of kit I own.
Good review Blackie. I have a one quart and the M40. Thank you for the idea of carring a canteen cup inside the M40.
I have an US made enamelled 2qt and two canteen cups. I had the chance years ago to purchase a M40 knockoff (either it was Swedish or an old East German). These three cater to some my needs (unless I’m using either of my Dutch (camp) ovens. I would choose an original large German cook pot.

I would do the M-40 cook set

those Pots are realy nice..take care my Friend

Blackie the new 2 qt bush pots have the bigger handles I think most all the gear now has the bigger batwing handles
Many food cans have a liner applied to the inside of the can that can melt off into the food, it’s better to cook in the pot and deal with having to wash the pot than risk poisoning yourself
When canned food is immersed in water, the can linning will not melt even if boiled. So, there is no risk.

I still rock the Walmart Grease Pot
What about adding the Pathfinder Canteen cook set or bottle cook set to the mix? I know for years you used a canteen setup for cooking.
Sro m40 in the canteen bag. Keep it on the 4 wheeler
I'll agree with you blackie m40 who's the best one to take with you camping
Blackie, I have a question, will the 1 qt bushpot fit into the M40? Thanks for the video.
Where do you get the m-40bush pot?
How many quarts of water does a PF hold? Thanks blackie
Wich is tougher pathfinder titanium small pot or the new stainless steel 1 ?? Thnx much .
I believe the last time I cooked outdoors I made cornbread 😊
Winter sucks
Why do you use BBQ paint?
Is it true about the taste of food you cook in your pots will leach into the water you boil for coffee / teas and if so how bad or problematic is it?
being forward deployed, i ordered a 1qt to play with. should be here in about another week or 2. not really concerned with the rush. its not going to see really any field use. just something to experiment with in the at home kitchen
Then make sure you DO go home, in the same condition you got there, so you can experiment with your bushpot. TFYS... a vet
@@baronedipiemonte3990 maybe tell the pairs of idiots fighting to calm down then 🤣 not a big fan of Europe
Does the one qt fit inside the 2qt bush pot?
Yes, it does.
I say nest a 1 qt inside of the 2 qt. With a 8 inch skillet on the the bottom. Along with the bottle or canteen set you should be able to do about whatever you want. just as easily as having the m40 ... Jmo
