Another excellent HIP reaction. Gord completely reinvented the frontman's role. A true original. An artistic visionary. He always gave us 200% !!
I never tire of seeing Gord Downie on stage, he is so excessive and on point in his interpretations that it is easy to stay focused on him and forget a little, sometimes the other members, but never for long!🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!!
I've played in bands forever, one of the biggest culture shocks when I moved to Canada, is that bands like each other. You mentioned Oasis at the UK awards - who were always fighting with Blur - or wanting to box Robbie Williams etc. In Canada, bands new nice to each other, they share songs, they play together. It was Sarah Hamer who introduced the band, a great performer and very talented writer. She mentioned that as a 16 year old she had been to gigs and met the Hip who gave her advice and encouragement. Years later, Gord would do backing vocals for her on her stuff - recorded and on stage, and she would do the same for him. - before Sarah presented the band, comedian Brent Butt presented her. Brent had a show that ran for a number of seasons and sold in something like 27 countries worldwide - in one episode, the Hip make a cameo as a band who rehearse in his garage.
This is recorded in a CBC studio, one of many covers done as a tribute to the band. This blows the other away, it"s perfect - and yes thats Jim Creegan of the Bare Naked Ladies playing bass ruclips.net/video/aMOc-QHbEtI/видео.htmlsi=oInSta8j-78Ulc2P
Sarah singing with the band, she's so damn cool! ruclips.net/video/dxFkZQJSxb4/видео.htmlsi=Azz6Fc3Evs37IGzt
OH! Corner Gas! I didn't realize that was him.
@@kengaroo67 Brent is just the loveliest guy - the oldest "regular" guest on Stop Podcasting Yourself (they only allow guests on once a year) but everyone adores him, that podcast doesn't allow comedians to do "bits" its chat only, but he is one of the funniest guys out there - his wife Nancy has also been a guest and she's lovely too. The show refuses to do advertising, but has a pledge drove for two consecutive shows per year, that is almost always hen they have Brent on, because everyone loves him so much. - It's a great podcast too, definitely the place to discover comedians - since the Juno awards included the best comedy album again, every winner is someone who was a regular on Stop Podcasting Yourself
Really enjoy watching you experience TTH for the first time. Having been a lifelong fan and attending close to 50 shows, this is what they gave you every night.
Gushing. Yes Rory, that's a great word to describe the powerful 'tension & release' energy of this very special rock n roll band.
Peter Mansbridge - Canadian news anchor

Mike Weir - Canadian professional golfer
David Suzuki - Canadian academic, science broadcaster & environmental activist
Kurt Browning - Canadian figure skater
Ron MacLean - Canadian sportscaster & television host
BareNaked Ladies - Canadian rock group
Wayne Gretzky - Canadian hockey player, one of the best ever
Can we take a minute to acknowledge, in general, how completely awesome Paul's backing vocals are?
Listen to the hip with earbuds and randomly take one out. Alternate ears. It's an incredible way to bring in certain instruments or Paul and Gord Sinclair's backing vocals.
His performances are like improv jazz but with Canadian/British humour.
In Kansas City and was blessed to see them open many years ago opening for Page and Plant. Didn't know they were opening and was so excited! Got into them because of 100th Meridian and fell in love. Nobody else knew who they were but soon everyone went nuts🥰
THAT WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!! I LOVE TRAGICALLY HIP LOVE GORD DOWNIE AND THE WHOLE AWESOME BAND!!! Awesome reaction Rory and thank you Todd for this awesome video!! 😊🩷🔥🤟✌️
That was great. 👍👍
It is incredible how much difference there is between Gord's polished in studio vocals and his live vocal work. Rory mentions how he could change up from a soft voice to a hard voice in a quick transition.
I love the hip song Fire in the Hole, as hard a rocker as the Hip had. Gord does the whole song in a completely manic voice, meanwhile the band is absolutely rocking the shit out of it. I've only heard the studio version of the song and haven't heard a live version of Fire in the Hole. That could go completely amok.
You should watch some of the final concert from 2016. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2015 and died 2017. Can you imagine being told you're dying and the response is to go ahead and do a cross country tour? The last concert of said tour was in his home town of Kingston Ontario but it was broadcast all over the country on the CBC. 1/3 of the Candian population tuned in to that concert. I was watching it on a big screen in Officer Square in Fredericton NB where I was going to University at time and it was crazy. It felt almsot like he was there with us, I could only imagine what it would be like if he really was. It was so emotional.
He does The Weakerthans’ “Aside” at the end!
17:48 it's so good
I knew I recognized it.
"And I'm leaning on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it almost feels okay."
Aside, The Weakerthans
Says a lot that Gordon would quote John K. Sampson.
You should do more Weakerthans Rory!
Awesome to see someone reacting to the hip! Definitely the soundtrack of the 90s/2000s here. You should definitely check out the hip at the misty moon in Halifax NS. Amazing show.
Great selection Todd. Fantastic reaction Rory. It's interesting to me out of all the videos of the Hip you've done so far I don't know if you've done one where Gord has his hanky out. Which was a major prop for him for much of the 2000's
Is Rory on holiday ?! long time , no see
You didn't recognise geddy lee and alex lifeson from Rush?😮
One of the guys talking at the beginning was Peter mansbridge pretty sure u watched his interview with Gord. Also rush singer and drummer talked along with ofc Wayne Gretzy “the great one”, also a couple other people u definitely would probably know if explained.
You didn't recognize GEDDY AND ALEX????❤🇨🇦
If only he’d sing, not scream.
Sorry Trace, that's just what you get at a Hip live show. You can't say that he's not invested in the music. Meanwhile, the band is completely instinctive to Gord's improvisations. It's a performance, and not necessarily just a reiteration of one of their songs.
@@williamdemerchant7295 I get it, best band in the world, agreed. But at some point Gord stopped singing on stage and started screaming. Mid 2000s.
I heard it was easier on his voice, (I kid you not). Probably just the way they liked to have their monitors set up, he had to sing quite strongly for the right balance.
Love these Hip reactions. I’m becoming a big fan of yours. Someone is getting you great clips. Take a listen to Sarah Harmer/Weeping Tile sometime and see what you think
You are not legal to be in a bar in Ontario until you are 19.
Greatest band ever. Period.
Can't see it Rush is better
Rush is definitely better at writing the same song over and over again, other than that, nope.@@diltberg9627
I'm sorry but Rush is the best Canadian band tragically hip is maybe 5th best
Dude I worked for them lmao 😂 he was a saint
What was all the stuff with the truckers?
I would suggest Killerwhaletank. Yes all one word. He goes big.
