Japan, 1160 AD. Tokiwa Gozen holds two young boys in her arms. She’s the wife to the head of the Minamoto Family. This used to be a pretty good gig, were it not for the fact that the Taira family existed. The Taira were the Capulets to the Minamoto’s Montagues, two houses alike in dignity who hated each other’s guts, until today. Today the Taira snuff out the Minamoto for good.
The younger boy, Yoshitsune, was only one year old that day. The day his father and brothers were put to the sword, and his mother taken away from him forever. The day he was separated from his brother. But he would spend the rest of his life fighting for revenge.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源 義経, c. 1159 - June 15, 1189) was a commander of the Minamoto clan of Japan in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. During the Genpei War, he led a series of battles that toppled the Ise-Heishi branch of the Taira clan, helping his half-brother Yoritomo consolidate power. He is considered one of the greatest and the most popular warriors of his era, and one of the most famous samurai in the history of Japan.

Yoshitsune is def in the Top 10 Guys Who Had Their History Buried In a Pile of Fanfic
I like the implied arc of Yoshitsune gradually coming to accept Benkei as his brother.
fan fiction says they were a little more than brothers - playing strip mahjong together.
That Genghis Khan theory is crazy, imagine if it were true, that would mean there are millions and millions of Minamotos on mainland Asia right now, and then it would be a huge battle royale to see who is shogun
Kinda true for the rest of Japan’s feudal history. Any samurai and their mom would try to lay claim that they have the Minamoto bloodline to increase their own legitimacy.
@@aaronrichardsoong4110because Minamoto is part of imperial family and claiming their descendants kinda give them prestige.
If not Minamoto they will go to Taira.
more believable than the genghis khan theory is that he ended up escaping to hokkaido with his war buddies and just lived out the rest of his life there. this is supported by the fact that there are folk tales of his escape forming a distinct line up northern japan and into hokkaido.

- Yoshitsune’s last word to his brother Yoritomo
All historical documents about Yoshitsune need to be rewritten to include this.
Wasn't their rivalry because of the conniving old man?
@kv4648 Go-Shirakawa just fanned the flames. Yoritomo was always power-hungry. The Emperor was simply cunning enough to use it against him.
I think it should be noted that the Minamoto and Taira clans were the two greatest warrior clans in Japan with lineages that go back to the imperial family. And their rivalry for power was fierce. The war featured in this video was generations in the making.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Every time I think you've made your best video you go and outdo yourself again. Amazing work! The animation was beautiful!
Benkei you absolute hero
Next time you do Japan, you really need to do Oda Nobunaga. Dude went from being known as the Fool of Owari to calling himself Demon King of the Sixth Heaven. Real possibility he was sarcastically mocking someone else when he used that latter name (as I believe it was used in a response to a letter where the letter's sender signed with a title he didn't actually have), but there is so much material to work with for him, I'd love to see what you did with it. You could even use the Fact, Legend, and Fiction marker with all the legends that surround him.
Come on you've done Fred the Antichrist already, so you should do the Demon King sometime!
I have been waiting for a Nobunaga video ever since the Ieyasu video
The not Emperor is sure giving off some serious Darth Sidious vibes ngl.
And that's how the Emperor should have been in Star Wars. A lone human without any powers, but somehow could manipulate all the Jedi and politicians to fight each other. Then take power in the chaos.
my japanese is rusty, but i think at 6:14 the dialogue bubble says "let's tax sushi" or something lol. actually all the japanese bubbles are pretty funny. "heiwa, kyodai" haha
The animation in this is fantastic. It feels like paper puppets.

Yoshitsune in the afterlife be like: "I should've sided with Yoshinaka..."
Love how in all of Japanese history the emperor is never the one in power. Meji fixed it but then two emperors later the emperor was a prisoner of his own military to the point that when wanted to announce surrender they tried to coup him
There were many times when the emperor was really powerful, especially during the early and late Asuka, much of the Nara, and early Heian periods. It just so happens that as time went on, powerful regents, generals, and even retired emperors managed to gain influence over the ruling sovereign, most especially if the latter is a child, and eventually become the power behind the throne. It doesn’t help that the emperor’s duties were mostly to conduct state ceremonies and religious rituals, leaving most of the nitty-gritty of actual governance ideally to the Council of State, but in reality to the aforementioned power.
What’s even more funny is that even the shoguns eventually became figureheads, with the most notable example being the Kamakura featured at the end of the video, with Yoritomo’s successors being controlled by the Hojo clan’s Shikkens.
@@theelevatedone2536 whack
Nothing actually changed during the meiji restoration, they just replaced the old oligarchs with new ones. Emperor meiji was still in his teens and was fully under the control of the oligarchs.

Kiyomori really sent Yoshitsune to a temple where he could learn all the skills he would need to get revenge? MOVE OVER, EINSTEIN!!! THERE'S A NEW GENIUS IN TOWN!!
The animation on this was absolutely stellar! You just keep getting better and better!
I might be incorrect but I think the instance of the emperor who drowned with his grandmother, was the same one in which the regalia sword of the Tenno went down with them. Before it of course mysteriously reappeared in the Royal Families possession, no questions asked 😂 i may be mixing my Emperors but either way, Japanese history makes Old Europe look like a politically stable paradise 😭😭
The sword was the only one that is lost. But most likely they made a new one to replace it.
This animation is a whole new level. Big congrats.
Another Life and Times! I never thought I’d see the day.
Im actually such a huge fan of your stuff. Tbh I feel like you make more nuanced points in your ten minute videos than a lot of the bigger pop history channels make in hour-long documentaries.
Honestly the fact that the majority of people were malnourished until recent times makes a single dude surviving so long against many, a lot more believable.
The like was for the song in the ad as much as anything. Kudos, Jack.
can i just say jack, as a bit of a linguistics nerd, it fills my heart with joy that you went out of your way to try to pronounce the names in this video with at least some accuracy to japanese phonology.
Thanks, Jack Rackam... another winner!!

I did not wake up today expecting a reference to Weird Al's Hardware Store, let alone in an ad read, but here I sit pleasantly surprised
WOAH this channel has leveled up its animation quality sense i last watched a video.
Can't see that anyone else has said it, so I will say it now. your Weird Al reference in the Aura plug was noticed and appreciated.
Another enjoyable video and I especially liked the Japanese dialogues. 🙂
As a video creator, I hope you don't take this negatively: @4:57, the Kanji is written in the wrong direction (it should be right to left), the verb "to destroy" should be conjugated (probably as 滅ぼされる), there should be a か after 亡くなった, and 参加する should be conjugated in the imperative (probably as 参加売れ).
Both taida and minimoto were born from sheering branches off the royal family tree. That's why they hated each other. Both technically royal family just. The extra.
I fucking love the combination of your animation style and ancient japanese scroll painting. it fits so perfectly.
pour one out for the real one, Benkei
Benkei deserves being remembered as one of the most legendary warriors of all time.
Yoshitsune aside, can we talk about Go Shirakawa for a moment? Old man was on demon time
The life and Times are back
They never left, they just needed to be remembered!
Your commercial song brought a tear of joy to eye. I love you sir. You are my hero.
The movement of the charachters reminds me of Rock of Ages, I gut to say, I like it
Yes! Benkei's last stand!! The "one guy holding a bridge against a large army" trope is almost a staple of historical legend, but I love the addition of Benkei still standing in death. Detective Conan even referenced this in a case when talking about how adrenaline and exertion can speed up rigor mortis. Like maybe there's a grain of truth to that legend.
The animation really took a step up in this episode. My only gripes are the shadow going behind the non-emperor in one shot and some AI-generated soldiers at the end.
These videos just get weirder and weirder and I love it!!!!!
This needs more attention! Such high quality!!
I like the the indicators for: for sure history, Legend and Embellishment. But I found it hard to notice them sometimes. Maybe decrease the opacity or give them colors to make it easier to note when they happen.
This has to be your most beautiful looking video to date. Love the style.
Yay, Life & Times is back!

I'm a simple man, I see Benkei and I watch.
The Minamoto side of the Heike Monogatri is, like, 5% Yoritomo, 35% Yoshinaka, and 60% Yoshitsune. It's amazing how much of a rearguard Yoritomo was, for the guy who won it all.

Go Shirakawa being a puppet master is interesting. I didn't find any of that when I was researching Yoshitsune. It does make a lot of the events make sense though.
The anomation is great. Still love your old stuff, but seeing the new and improving animation is nice. Keep up the great work.
Your animation style is improved also I recognize the screaming woman photo from a Godzilla movie
I adore the graphics you have for History, Legend and Fiction
I have to say, this is award winning IMO. Entertaining as hell, fluid animation, I feel like I learned a new story.
That Ghengis Khan thing is part of the plot of the manga King of Wolves. Written by Buronsan (Fist of the North Star) and illustrated by Kentaro Miuria (Berserk.)
Oddly enough, it kinda sucks but the art and fights are good.
…And this is why I want Shana Oh Yoshitsune to be an anime!
Yoritomo was a total dick, Yoshitsune won many battles that many commanders could not have pulled off with so few casualties and he never tried to usurp his brother. He just wanted to enjoy all the lands the royal family gave him and enjoy being a wealthy landowner. Also Go Shirakawa probably didn't drive a wedge between the brothers, it seems Yoritomo already had plans to get rid of his brother. At the very least, assassins who had done many jobs for Yoritomo did try to kill Yoshitsune and in all of probability, this wasn't an "independent" work but a hit from Yoritomo. It's hard to parse between ledged and history but we know for sure those assasins did work for Yoritomo before. And while I don't agree with the ledgends that Yoshitsune fled Japan, I agree with them on the idea that assassins who had previously worked for Yoritomo were working for him again when they tried to kill Yoshitsune. Poor Yoshitsune, betrayed by his own brother.
Power corrupts everyone
When in doubt, hassou tobi
